Flashback Friday

Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week we are going back to the 2nd week of April, 2012.

#3 Nell “The Day Before”

This was the group’s first release in four years because of a hiatus due to the members’ enlistments. “The Day Before” was the lead single from the album “Slip Away”. The album would hit the top spot on the charts, and the song would peak at #3. It is also the band’s best selling song. The MV stars actors Song Jae Rim & Lee Min Ki.

Flashback Friday

Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see what we were listening to in the 4th week of March, 2012. This year was really iffy for me, I actually don’t remember any of these songs this week. Maybe you remember more.

#3 2AM “I Wonder If You Hurt Like Me”
This was the single off of their second Korean EP. It looks like the group spend the rest of 2012 promoting in Japan. I would also like an explanation of the EP’s title, if anyone knows why it’s called “F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Way Of Love”. What does that mean?

Flashback Friday

Happy Friday. It’s been a weird week so I’m glad to see it gone lol. Every week I go check out the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see what songs were charting in the 4th week of October, 2013.

#3 Lim Chang Jung “A Guy Like Me”
I always appreciate it when I’m listening to music and getting emotional or flat out crying in public when people just ignore me lol. 5 stars and a tip for you, Lyft driver. Lim Chang Jung has had a successful singing career for over 20 years now, but I’ve always associated him more with his acting. But I have heard this song before, and I know I’ve heard it on tv before.

Spring has arrived in Korea! "Cherry Blossom Ending" season is here

Busker Busker’s song “Cherry Blossom Ending,” which details a spring romance, entered Melon music chart at the 87th spot on the evening of March 16.

The song has made an annual return to music charts around spring since the group released it back in March of 2012. This makes it the sixth time that the song has entered music charts to signal the coming of spring.

Other spring related songs like IU’s “Not Spring, Love, or Cherry Blossoms,” Eric Nam and Red Velvet’s collaboration “Spring Love,” and Roy Kim‘s “Bom Bom Bom” also tend to enter music charts around this time as well. Meanwhile, BIGBANG’s new song “Flower Road,” released on the 13th continues to top music charts.

Flashback Friday

Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then, I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see who was on top for the 3rd week of November, 2011. All the songs by the ladies this week were already posted before, so this time we’ll check out some of their live performances.

#3 Wonder Girls “Be My Baby”
Still my personal favorite WG song! I remember watching this stage back then and was so terrified that someone was going to fall down the stairs and break something. But they all pulled through because they are the freaking Wonder Girls and they are freaking awesome.

WatchMojo Thinks They Know The Best K-Pop Videos

Source: WatchMojo

K-Pop is so vast I think it's hard to put together a top 10 video list. I agree with some of their choices though.
Omona, what's in your top 10 list?

Flashback Friday

Quick post because I’m in a hurry for food lol. Also, I only remember 2 of these songs. My memory for this particular year has been so spotty. Every week I go through the charts for this Friday in a past year and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see what topped the charts 5 years ago, in the 4th week of April, 2012.

Jamming Out To 6 Impressive Covers By DAY6

Rising band DAY6 from JYP Entertainment is definitely something special as they continue to capture hearts with their latest single, ‘Everyday DAY6 [April]’. Made up of members Sungjin, Jae, Young K, Wonpil & Dowoon, the boys are here to stay with new song releases every month. Usually armed with their electric guitars, keyboards and amplifiers alongside their natural flair for music, they seem like your typical rock band. But are they really?

Flashback Friday

A nice mix of slow jams and songs to dance to this Flashback Friday. I look through all the charts for this Friday in a past year and post the top three songs. Then, I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we’re going to see what topped the charts for the 4th week of October in 2013.

#3 IU “Red Shoes”

I personally did not like this era at all. Didn’t like the song and MV back then, and I still don’t like it now. The song feels really long to me. But damn, this was such a big hit for her.

[OMONA DISCUSSION] Is it possible for non-asian people to debut in K-pop?

Hello and welcome to the second OMONA DISCUSSION post! First of all I'd like to thank everybody that participated in the last one. If you have no idea what I'm talking about just click here. If you want to talk about a certain topic next time just post it in the comments or message me (or make a post lol). Maybe we can really turn this into a weekly/monthly thing!

Today, I want to talk about the possibility of non-asian people debuting in a K-pop group. The reason why I choose this topic is because I randomly stumpled upon this video on youtube last week.

FIRST NON-ASIAN K-POP TRAINEE SPEAKS OUT (youtube) )

In this video, a guy from Italy talks about his experience in Korea. He trained with 4 other korean dudes and was preparting to debut in a K-pop group, but in the end it didn't work out because of visa-issues. He doesn't mention the company though so we don't know if he was signed to a big or a small entertainment agency.

Nowadays it's not unusual to have one or more half-korean or non-korean idols in a group. However, most are still asian. When Chocolate debuted back in 2011 with 3 half-korean/half-white girls they received great attention. Unfortunately they didn't make it big.
Later, Busker Busker debuted with an caucasian member. I don't know much about Busker Busker so I don't know if it was a big deal. In 2015, Alex joined Rania, making her the first half-african-american/half-white idol in Korea. Netizens complimented her, saying she was pretty and asking what the hell such a pretty girl is doing in Korea. However Rania failed to make it big even after Alex joined the group.

Technically, the answer to my question above is "yes". However, none of the examples mentioned above have really hit it big (Busker Busker isn't really an idol group), eventhough officially the big agencies are open to any nationality and race in their auditions. So I'd like to hear your opinion now, Omona: Do you think it's possible that one day we will see a non-asian person debuting in Korea, maybe under SM/JYP/YG, and hitting it big? Why is this still not the case in 2016 and after K-Pop became a global sensation? Do you think Korea is ready for non-asian popstars (given the fact that they already talk bad about foreign asian idols, calling them "traitors" and what not)? Would YOU (if you're not asian) want to debut in Korea? Share your opinion below!

List of groups/artists who achieved a Certified All-kill on iChart from 2011 to 2016

Source: lilyU__.

Interesting to note that only 3 male groups managed to score a CAK : Big Bang, Ikon, and (kinda unexpectedly) INFINITE.

I knew INFINITE had "All-Kills" with their other songs, but a CAK with their CHRISTMAS SONG nonetheless? That info completely flew out of my mind for some reasons. lol

Also, justice for Miss A!

gaon releases their end of the year charts for 2015!

1

gaon has (finally) released their official end of the year charts for 2015. i decided to just compile the main digital chart (along with the album / physical) chart below because it'd take a loooot of space up to add in the digital, download and streaming charts. if you're interested in the exact number of download / streaming numbers a certain song received just click on the sourced pages below and it should take you directly to what you're looking for! the only other chart released for the year was the background music chart so there's that if you're interested! it's very text heavy behind the cut! (and if there's any mistakes or awkward coding just mention it and i'll try to edit, lmao. the same goes with anyone that i may have missed tagging!).

Songs that climbed back up on the charts this year

Songs are usually considered big successes if they top music charts upon their release, but being able to climb back up on the charts may even be more impressive.

Throughout the year, a multitude of new songs have spent time on top of the chart, but only a handful of older songs have been able to rise back up. A recent post on Pann has been gaining a lot of attention recently for documenting the songs that have reappeared on the charts this after their initial release.

Netizens were generally impressed by the artists’ whose songs were able to re-climb the charts, and left their opinions expressing their respect. A translation of the post and all the photos can be found below:
