Don't forget to check out part 1 of this post! (In fact I recommend it bc some things mentioned here are explained there)
It’s probably not a surprise to anyone familiar with Korean history that Koreans have a complex relationship with their own native culture. A lot of what is considered traditionally Korean was phased out, left behind or even actively eschewed as part of the post-colonial, post-war, sub-38th desperation to modernize and stabilize as quickly as humanly possible. Many of the most obvious markers of classic Korean life were replaced, erased, or even rejected as relics of pre-modern unworldliness, poverty, and devastation. So hanboks and hanoks were put away and torn down, polyester and concrete taking their place as Korea moved forward in a stilted race to escape the hazards of being a poor, damaged, weak country that the rest of the world could afford to ignore. Simply in terms of the looks and sounds of everyday life, the Korea of the 1950s-60s and the Korea of today have astoundingly little in common.

Conflicts between the South Korean and Chinese delegations at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics have set off a storm of public outrage from both countries, with several Korean celebrities getting involved in the furor.
The controversies began with the opening ceremonies, when a performer dressed in traditional Korean hanbok was included in the segment representing 56 ethnic minority groups of China and other various Chinese cultural representations. Many Korean netizens reacted with anger to what they perceived as yet another attempt by Chinese media to lay claim to Korean culture, and public figures and politicians condemned the inclusion of hanbok at the event and the depiction of Koreans as an ethnic minority of China.

It’s almost Lunar New Year’s Day aka seol-nal in Korea! Seol is one of the country’s biggest holidays and one of the few occasions where most Korean families still practice old traditions such as eating specific traditional food, and customs such as cha-re [altar rites memorializing ancestors] or sebae [younger generations of the family bow to their elders to pay respect and wish them good fortune and get spending money in return \0/] Some people even still wear hanbok (mostly kids and newlyweds though).
In this day and age, it’s not unusual for the more esoteric elements of any country’s native culture to be reserved for special occasions and I definitely remember when the only times I saw hanboks on Korean TV was in seol and chuseok holiday specials or dry, dense sageuks that nobody but my uncles seemed to watch. But at some point sageuks became more fashionable, hanboks re-emerged as hipster trends, and really starting just a few years ago (about the same time that certain departments of the government realized just what a potent soft power they could harness in K-pop, but I digress) more and more surface elements of traditional Korean culture have been emerging in mainstream K-pop. The increasingly widening and globalizing audience for Korean pop culture has helped in part to lead to a surging revitalization and reclamation in mainstream media of the culture that is considered endemically ours, literally ‘우리의 것.’
In fact, there have been so many songs in just the last few years that this post had to be split into two parts - part 1 with various “honorable mentions” and OP’s ranking of the 10 best traditionally-inspired songs/concepts will be posted in part 2.
NOTE: For the sake of judging on equal terms, such as music / lyrics / choreography / aesthetics / MV, I only ranked official releases with properly staged and filmed videos. Noteworthy songs/performances that didn’t meet these ranking criteria or otherwise crack the best-of are listed below.
[Plus all the typical disclaimers - these are all OP’s subjective personal opinions, keep it civil, etc etc]

BTS and Exo’s Kai were the only Korean artists to make Rolling Stone’s “The 25 Most Stylish Musicians Now” list.
On January 21 local time, the American pop culture magazine published its picks for the 25 most stylish musicians at the moment. They were voted by a select group of journalists, designers, and industry insiders, and the magazine added that the chosen artists are “influencing fashion as much as they’re shaping music.”

As many people had expected, the BTS-inspired webtoon, "7FATES: CHAKHO," turned out to be an instant hit, with the digital comic exceeding 15 million views only two days after its release on Jan. 15. These views amount to the highest record for any new webtoon unveiled by Korea's online portal Naver.
"7FATES: CHAKHO," which is available in 10 different languages, including English, German and Spanish, has been garnering positive reviews worldwide, scoring a 9.91 rating on Naver Webtoon's global service platform as of Monday. Although some fans are reacting negatively to the webtoon and criticizing BTS's management company, HYBE, for its "excessive use" of BTS's intellectual property, others are showing their support for the digital comic, praising its gripping story and eye-catching drawing style.

Junho snatches Jimin's crown! Oh my!
2022-01-16 04:52 pmIn a shocking turn of events that no one saw coming—except for 2PM and "The Red Sleeve" fans—2PM's Junho has risen, like a Phoenix from the 2nd-gen ashes, to dethrone none other than BTS' very own Jimin from his top spot on the January Boygroup Member Brand Reputation list. Jimin has famously ranked #1 for 35 months straight.
Godspeed Junho, and congratulations to Jimin on—as armies have phrased it—organically staying in the top despite not having anything to promote.

On January 3rd, BTS hosted a V Live introducing the first of their new hand-designed official merchandise. In line with the home-shopping theme of the broadcast, the members presented Jin’s personally designed set of “Good Day” and “Bad Day” themed pajamas and pillows. However, many fans soon expressed their disappointment at the pajamas being priced at 119,000 KRW (approx. 100 USD), and the pillow at 69,000 KRW (approx. 60 USD) on the Weverse shop.
