Recently adapted into a television drama, the Kakao webtoon “A Business Proposal” has captured the interest of both local and international viewers with its unique, heart-fluttering storyline and dramatic romance of two couples that were brought together because of an unexpected blind date.

Because of the different cultural backgrounds of potential viewers, the global launch of “A Business Proposal” began with concerns rather than excitement, webtoon author and illustrator Narak said in an email interview with The Korea Herald.

“It turned out that all my worries were for naught. I never imagined my webtoon being read in different languages by readers around the world,” Narak added.

Competition is heating up between Naver and Kakao in Europe, not just in Japan, which was initially regarded as the major focus of their global expansion.

Kakao Piccoma, a Japanese subsidiary providing a webtoon subscription service, announced last Friday that it started offering services in France, a country that has shown rapid growth in the digital comics market and a great interest in Asian animation.

"We will enable subscriptions for digital comics produced in France and other European countries," said Piccoma Europe CEO Kim Hyung-rae, who joined Kakao Piccoma last September when it established the European subsidiary.

Kakao's announcement was made a few days after Naver preemptively reinforced its European operations, confirming last Wednesday that its outgoing CEO, Han Seong-sook, was assigned to manage the company's business strategies in Europe.

Naver's webcomic "Money Game" is getting another remake as a reality online show in the United States, following a live adaptation last year by a Korean YouTube channel. This is the first Korean webtoon to get a remake produced overseas.

"Since this Korean web reality show has garnered a huge amount of popularity, we have decided to make our webcomic's intellectual property (IP) into reality-based content in the U.S., which is the home of reality shows," Kim Bum-hyu, director of the global IP business at Naver Webtoon, said in a statement, Tuesday. "We intend to continue presenting Naver Webtoon's high-quality IP in various content formats to create synergy."

The U.S. YouTube channel Jubilee, which has over 7 million subscribers, released the first episode of the webcomic's live adaptation on Monday.

The five-part show invites eight participants of different ethnicities, occupations and religious backgrounds to live in a facility with separate cells for 10 days.

Since the inception of webtoons (a Korean term for webcomics) in the early 2000s, Korean cartoonists have been producing content optimal for desktop computers as well as handheld device screens. However, in recent years, a number of creators have begun occupying art galleries with their work.

Cartoonist Kim Hee-min, who goes by his pen name Kian84, is best known for his hit webtoons series "Fashion King" and his TV appearance on MBC's reality show "I Live Alone."

After wrapping up his latest comics series "Bokhak Wang (King of the Returnees)" last year, Kian84 has launched a career as an artist, starting with his first upcoming solo exhibition that is scheduled to start on March 25 at the Superior Gallery in Seoul's Gangnam District.

Titled "Full Possession," the show will unveil 18 of his newest paintings that reinterpret the key characters and iconography from his webtoons in a style of colorful, dynamic pop art.

Korean dramas adapted from celebrated webcomics, also known as "webtoons" in Korea, have become the new recipe for success as directors and screenwriters seek binge-worthy storylines for the small screen in genres including family drama, comedy, romance, action, thriller and horror.

Some of the most highly talked about K-dramas this year, including Netflix original series "D.P.," "Hellbound" as well as tvN's "Yumi's Cells," started as webtoons.

Producing dramas based on webtoons became possible thanks to rich storylines and original content. Buoyed by the growing popularity of such dramas, directors have teased audiences with the potential for second seasons. This speculation has also seen webtoons increase even more in popularity.

In the past, Korean singers usually released the soundtracks for dramas or movies only, but lately, they are diving into the new field that is gaining international traction ― webtoons or digital comics.

Singer-actor Jinyoung, a member of K-pop boy band B1A4, is poised to put out, "You Said You Don't Know Love," the soundtrack for the Ridi Corp. webtoon, "Morning Kiss at Tiffany's," on Oct 21. Jinyoung took part in composing the R&B/synth pop song, which will set the mood for "Morning Kiss at Tiffany's."

Prior to him, Soyou, of the now-disbanded girl group, Sistar, released "Breath" ― another soundtrack for the webtoon ― in September. "Morning Kiss at Tiffany's" revolves around a woman who becomes a housekeeper for her crush after losing her home.

DC Comics and Naver have released a brand new, original webtoon series of "Batman" on the popular digital Webtoon platform, Thursday, as part of their partnership to introduce the unique universe and characters from the global entertainment titan's intellectual property in the form of webtoons, or digital comics published and read online.

The new Batman story, "Batman: Wayne Family Adventures," exists outside of the main DC Batman chronology. It takes a step back from the usual action-packed scenes in the city of Gotham and instead offers family dynamics and adventures within Wayne Manor between the Dark Knight and his "endless supply of adopted, fostered and biological superhero children," the synopsis reads.

The first three episodes are already live on Naver Webtoon's English and Spanish platforms, targeting American and European audiences, and will be made available in other languages, including Korean, soon. Each new chapter will be published every Thursday (local time).
