(it's midway through the 23rd now.) the chart (if not including the overview chart that gaon released earlier on this week that focused on girl groups sales for 2015; their full chart won't be released for a few weeks probably) is the first of the year to be released by a prominent digital music site. more behind the cut!

it'd honestly be a mess trying to write out everything else and, honestly, minus the background music chart, all of the other charts are pretty similar. (some idol groups are higher on the streaming chart, ie: snsd is up in the 20s with "lion heart" and shinee is in the 40s with "view".) they can all be found by going here and clicking on the little dropdown arrow, in this order: the page linked is the overall chart, the second on the dropdown is the long run chart (aka: songs that charted for the longest), followed by the streaming chart, download chart, background music chart and, lastly, the music search chart.

★ all of the songs by idol artists / groups (minus osts, songs from competition shows, ect.) that made the chart are bolded to show the contrast with non-idol releases, basically, because competition was really intense this year, ie: idol releases vs. non-idol releases, even with the high number of comebacks from idol groups.
★ the only male idol groups to make the charts are: big bang, exo, high4 (with a song released in 2014), ikon and shinee.
★ the only female idol groups to make the charts are: 4minute, a pink, aoa, exid, g-friend, girl's day, mamamoo, miss a, red velvet, sistar, snsd and wonder girls.
★ the only idol soloists to make the charts are: boa, iu, kyuhyun (with a song released in 2014), and taeyeon.
★ apparently naver is one of the more important charts, up there with melon, so people are saying that most (if not all) of the idol groups that made this chart are going to make gaon's end of the year digital 100 as well.
★ international artists to make the list include: adam levine, mark ronson, maroon 5 and sam smith.
★ g-friend and ikon are the only rookie groups to make any of the chars.

People call everyone that doesn't sell more than 1 million a flop. It's ridiculous tbh. Not to mention that...are people aware that boy groups usually don't do well digitally? Selling +500k digitally nowadays is huge for a boy group the same that selling +50k physically is huge for a girl group.

Gfriend's digitals are in-fucking-sane for a rookie group (especially from a unknown company). If they continue like this they could become a top group soon. I expected to see Twice on that list tho? Afaik they're still charting pretty high on melon and their sales are around 500k already. Mamamoo and EXID did amazingly well this year. Didn't people say that Ah Yeah flopped? lol.

Is IU considered an idol? I always thought she was considered an artist/singer.

Props to SHINee for being one of the very few boy groups in that list and that considering their shitty promos/non existent hype by SM after almost 2 years of absence.

people just wanted "ah yeah" to "flop" for some reason and i have no idea why. the song had over 900k on gaon in downloads around the middle of october; i haven't seen an update since then but it's probably broken 1mil by now easily.

it's hard to say with iu: she's tried to rebrand herself as an artist this year but i think she falls somewhere in the middle? i mostly say that because there were still people referring to her as an "idol actor" earlier this year when she was on "producer".

i don't know if i really see any other male groups than the above breaking end of the year digital charts like this, honestly. it wasn't complete or definite but i saw a list from instiz this last week of the male group / male idol soloists songs with the highest number of downloads this year on gaon and the only to break 500k were: big bang, ikon, exo, shinee and zico. there weren't even many that broke 400k that weren't above mentioned: bts (465k), beast (440k), and jonghyun (411k). i think park kyung may have too but i'm not totally sure.

I guess when a group gets popular or "trendy" they get lots of haters that are desperated to see them fail. Lots of people are calling EXID "one hit wonders" and idgi because Ah Yeah is one of the best selling songs this year? And even Hot Pink is not doing as horrible as people are claiming. It's still top 20-25 on melon so...

It's just extremely difficult for a male group to break 400-500k since they don't have nearly the same public appeal that girl groups have / they're mostly considered for middle school girls, so when people claim that exo, shinee or even ikon flopped i just rme because their numbers are extremely good for a male idol group.

I think IU being referred to as an idol is mainly because she's still so young and her early career involved lots of idol stylings unlike say Seo In Gook or Lee Seung Gi. And unlike them her primary career track is music, which is why she gets called an idol actor while they don't.

Gfriend pretty much came and snatched all the rookie wigs, which is amazing for a group from such a small company - they would absolutely not be there if their song (and to a lesser extent, their performance skills) wasn't solid. And were people really trying to claim Ah Yeah was a flop? It charted for five months, that's hardly flopping. As for IU, music-wise she doesn't seem to be considered an idol any more, it's more an association because of her age and previous image.

I'm not surprised there were so few boy groups on the chart. Boy groups seem to be all about creating and maintaining a fandom for steady income (concerts etc), they need at least a few digital/publicly recognised hits but after that, if they keep things up they're good.

I agree. Some people try to act as if Gfriend slayed thanks to the "media play" but their songs are genuinely catchy/fresh and they're solid performers (their choreos are simply awesome) so I don't think you can blame everything on "media play" tbh. Yeah, some people said that Ah Yeah flopped because it never reached #1 on melon and didn't sell as much as Up&Down but that's stupid. Only because a song doesn't debut at #1 or doesn't outsell a previous song (especially a super hit like Up&Down) it doesn't mean it's a flop at all. Last time I checked Gaon it had sold 900k. In which world is that a flop? lol.

I think the problem is that the general public (especially men) are very reluctant to give male groups a chance because they're mostly considered for middle school girls while girl groups have both male and female listeners. A casual male listener would only listen to a boy group if they have a more artistic/badass/hip hop image and sound like YG groups or Block B. If they're the typical "pretty boy" group with a simple pop song they don't even bother.

yeah, what Gfriend achieved is staggering considering they're rookies in an oversaturated market and from a small company at that.

And their company is really small - I watched their dance practice video for MGT and the sound system was so crappy, you could actually hear their shoes hitting the floor as they went through the choreo. Which is p much a hallmark of companies with no money, the last group I remember with a dp vid like that was Infinite for Before the Dawn.

Tbf, f(x) had their comeback very late in the year so their digital downloads/streams are obviously lower than others that released their stuff way earlier. In the last Gaon update they're at 516k already, so I think they'd make it to the yearly top 100.
