Wassup party people. I am in a quandary. Half of me says I don’t need to spend $30 on one Monsta X hat because wtf it’s only a hat. But the other part says that it’s the only piece of merch I want (I'm not a merch person at all), so $30 isn’t actually too bad. Well, that and two albums. Tell me it’s okay and help me justify the hat. I’m like 75% already, just push me over the edge so I can go to the pop up this weekend. Anyway! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 2nd week in December, 2010. I really liked a bunch of these songs, so this week is a win for me!

#3 Girls’ Generation “Hoot”
“Hoot” was the third Korean single they released in 2010, and all three would peak at #1. Despite being released in late October, their EP “Hoot” would be the 3rd bestselling album of the year. Loved this era so much! So much big hair, and I freaking love big hair! I looooved all the styling for the music shows. Despite my love for this song and era, I don’t really like the music video. The bad wigs distract me lol. They are unnecessary, along with Siwon. Like, what is he even doing here? It’s been awhile, so let’s check out the MV again.

Choreographer Bae Yoon Jung expressed her gratitude to PSY on the latest episode of “Radio Star”!

Bae Yoon Jung, who is famous for coming up with the iconic choreographies for hit songs like EXID‘s “Up & Down,” T-ara’s “Bo Peep Bo Peep,” KARA’s “Mister,” and the “Produce 101” theme song “Pick Me,” made a guest appearance on the November 10 episode of the MBC talk show.

As many already know, when PSY was getting ready for his first comeback after the explosive success of his 2012 hit “Gangnam Style,” the singer chose to reuse one of K-pop’s most famous choreographies for his next song. PSY’s choreography for his 2013 track “Gentleman” was originally created for Brown Eyed Girls’ smash hit “Abracadabra,” which had everyone imitating its signature dance move back in 2009.

As Bae Yoon Jung was the original choreographer for “Abracadabra,” PSY reached out to her to ask for her permission to use the famous dance move, which had earned the nickname the “arrogant dance” in Korea.

Wassup party people, happy Friday! I picked up a box of Danish pastries from the Danish bakery today and am hopped up on almond paste. I haven’t been there since before the pandemic so I might have overcompensated a little. Like, I did not need a whole loaf of rye bread either. Anyways! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 4th week in August, 2012.

#3 PSY “Gangnam Style”
The lead single from his 6th album. It would debut at the top spot, and both the song and the MV went viral almost immediately. It only took about 2 months to be the most viewed K-Pop video, 2 months for the video to be the most liked, and 5 months to reach 1 billion hits. It’s been awhile, so let’s check out the music video again, now at over 4 billion views. I feel like it’s been years since I’ve seen the video.

Producers Park Jin-young and Psy, who founded their own entertainment agency after reaching the peak of their K-pop careers as singers, are now on a search for unique talent to lead the booming K-pop scene with SBS's new audition show "LOUD."

"This is a joint project by Park Jin-young's JYP Entertainment, Psy's P Nation and SBS to form two worldwide boy groups, one for each agency… unlike previous audition shows that focused on the participants' appearance, dancing and singing, we value what's inside them," said series production chief Park Sung-hoon, known for the hit audition series "K-pop Star," during an online media conference for "LOUD," Thursday.

"The two producers (Park Jin-young and Psy) have something in common. They are both singers, producers and directors that lead the hallyu business. And when they first debuted on the K-pop scene (in the 1990s and early 2000s, respectively), they were quite sensational," the producer said. "With the two, we tried to capture the synergy they will create when meeting competent millennials from these days."

Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 3rd week in April, 2013. Some of the songs have been posted before, so we will check out some comeback stages.

#3 LYn featuring Baechigi “Tonight”
This was one of the singles from her very successful full album “Le Grand Bleu”. Multiple songs from the 10 track album would chart in the top ten, and this one would peak at #3. It is also still one of her biggest selling songs. The track features the duo of Baechigi. It’s my favorite song from the album. There was no video for this song, so here’s the audio.

#3 Girls’ Generation “Hoot”
I loved this era soooo much. That choreo? That styling? That big hair? That choreo? Ugh, A DREAM. This was the lead single of the EP of the same name, and the album would be one of the biggest sellers of the year.

For the third installment on this exclusive let's move to the funky side of town.
Since the playlist is quite long and LJ sucks at handling too many media I'll just post my top 5 + the full playlist.
As you'll notice "funk" and "retro" (as well as an hint of disco) might overlap, so I decided to make a maxi playlist for those of you gluttons who want to listen to it all (do enjoy 4+ hours of kpop flawlessness).

Side note: while the girls reign supreme over the retro style, the boys came in full force for this one. I did manage to get some queens in, but it's mostly a boys club...

#3 Seo In Guk “With Laughter Or With Tears”
This was the first time since his debut in 2009 that he ever promoted a ballad song. Which is weird to me because I only remember him singing ballads lol wtf. This release was sandwiched in between dramas and Japanese promotions. Gu Hyesun stars with him in the music video. What is going on in this MV? Did he beat up all those people? Or are they just hella drunk?

Singer Psy said Tuesday he had nothing to say about the allegation that his father-in-law had connections with the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a religious sect blamed for the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea.

The singer, famous for the international hit "Gangnam Style" married his current wife in 2016.

According to local newspapers and magazines, her father Yoo Jae-yeoul was the founder of a religious sect in 1966. Yoo was only 18 years old when he started it and called himself one of eight "angels" that received divine revelations.

The sect grew rapidly over the years, drawing followers including Lee Man-hee, the founder of the current Shincheonji Church of Jesus, who was then 36 years old.

First Friday of the year! Hope everyone had a safe new years. Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see who was on top for the 1st week of January, 2016. I vaguely remember these songs, probably because it was the first days of the new year and I was still vaguely hungover. Probably. Most likely. Heck, I’m drinking again right now.

#3 Yoon Mirae “This Love”
Beautiful! She looks gorgeous (ooh that red lip!), and sounds amazing. And the song is so nice too, and would eventually reach #1. This big, sweeping ballad was a non-album single and her first solo release in 4 years, aside from a few OST appearances.

69. BTS, "Blood, Sweat and Tears" (dir. Choi Yongseek and Ko Yoojeong, 2016)

“Blood, Sweat & Tears” is the thesis for BTS as a K-pop group whose work is rich for interpretation. The grab-bag of high-art references makes this music video ripe for fan theories. Cut to a museum filled with European Renaissance replications: Michelangelo’s Pietà explodes! Van Goghian sky swirls abound! V jumps off a balcony in front of a painting of the fallen Icarus! Amid this lavish portrait of BTS at the height of their game, one thing is clear: the septet makes K-pop for the thinking fan. -- CAITLIN KELLEY

Hello again Omona, Hope you're not getting too tired of me posting these rankings yet! As the decade grows closer to its end, they seem to be multiplying like rabbits and I sort of like seeing what ~the west~ thinks of Kpop even when their obvious ignorance or lack of taste makes me roll my eyes. This list is the most invalid one so far imo because there should be so many more Kpop MVs up there. Polished aesthetics and crazy visuals is where Kpop actually slays all competition.

That's a lot of text, I'm sorry! Just enjoy the videos if you don't wanna bother reading - though I do like some parts of the articles, especially the one about SNSD because that actually reflects how I feel about that song!
