Flashback Friday
2021-08-27 03:14 pmWassup party people, happy Friday! I picked up a box of Danish pastries from the Danish bakery today and am hopped up on almond paste. I haven’t been there since before the pandemic so I might have overcompensated a little. Like, I did not need a whole loaf of rye bread either. Anyways! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 4th week in August, 2012.
#3 PSY “Gangnam Style”
The lead single from his 6th album. It would debut at the top spot, and both the song and the MV went viral almost immediately. It only took about 2 months to be the most viewed K-Pop video, 2 months for the video to be the most liked, and 5 months to reach 1 billion hits. It’s been awhile, so let’s check out the music video again, now at over 4 billion views. I feel like it’s been years since I’ve seen the video.
#2 Huh Gak & Zia “I Need You”
This was a digital collaboration between the two singers. No MV, no live stages...just vibes lol. The song would reach #1 on the charts, and was a commercial success. To celebrate Huh Gak’s 10th anniversary last year, Play M (his company) had other artists in their roster do remakes of his songs. This song was covered by Apink’s Hayoung and Victon’s Seungsik.
#1 Kara “Pandora”
This was their only Korean release in 2012, they were promoting in Japan pretty much the whole year. Both the song and the album would peak at #1. It is also one of their biggest selling singles. One of my favorite songs and eras from Kara, I personally love it lots and think everything is pretty darn perfect. They are soooo pretty ugh I miss them so much. This week, let’s check out the dance version MV.
Honorable Mentions
#7 Beast “Beautiful Night”
This was one of the singles from their EP “Midnight Sun”. The album would debut at the top spot, and the song would peak in the top three. It’s my favorite song from them! I think the song is so fun and they look like they had fun performing it. Here’s their comeback stage at Inkigayo, it looks so fun (omg girl say ‘fun’ one more time wtf…but it does look fun)!
#8 BoA “Only One”
This was the lead single of her 7th Korean album of the same name. She wrote and composed the song, which would get an all-kill on the charts, and is her best selling song. Here’s a performance from Music Core, with an appearance from SHINee’s Taemin. Ugh the talent! The choreography is by the duo NappyTabs, who BoA worked with the previous year in the dance movie “Make Your Move” (which I never saw nor had any desire to see, sorry Queen).

Date: 2021-08-28 12:18 am (UTC)EDIT: BEcause of this post, I've been on YT watching KARA's videos LOL They don't have the best choreography for their songs but there's something about their walk and hand movement that makes me enjoy watching them (same thing with 4minute).

Date: 2021-08-28 12:27 am (UTC)This pleases me greatly.
Obviously, it is my favorite song ever in life. And I knew it would be on this list when I saw her name in the tags.
I DID see Make Your Move. In fact, I was at the premiere. And I saw the Queen up close. I openly wept as I tried to eke out the words "BoA, I love you." She looked at me and smiled. It remains glorious.

Date: 2021-08-28 08:26 am (UTC)Being in the US and hearing all these wegs saying Gang-naaam and seeing Psy of all freaking people on American TV is up there on the list of things I never thought I’d see in my life, and yet. What a surreal moment in time that was lmao. He ended up having really mixed feelings about that whole thing but I hope he’s made peace with it and can be proud of the fact that he paved the way ^_T
