Wassup party people. I am in a quandary. Half of me says I don’t need to spend $30 on one Monsta X hat because wtf it’s only a hat. But the other part says that it’s the only piece of merch I want (I'm not a merch person at all), so $30 isn’t actually too bad. Well, that and two albums. Tell me it’s okay and help me justify the hat. I’m like 75% already, just push me over the edge so I can go to the pop up this weekend. Anyway! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 2nd week in December, 2010. I really liked a bunch of these songs, so this week is a win for me!
#3 Girls’ Generation “Hoot”
“Hoot” was the third Korean single they released in 2010, and all three would peak at #1. Despite being released in late October, their EP “Hoot” would be the 3rd bestselling album of the year. Loved this era so much! So much big hair, and I freaking love big hair! I looooved all the styling for the music shows. Despite my love for this song and era, I don’t really like the music video. The bad wigs distract me lol. They are unnecessary, along with Siwon. Like, what is he even doing here? It’s been awhile, so let’s check out the MV again.
#2 Beast “Beautiful”
I remember this EXACT performance! It’s been 11 years now. Fuck my life. One of my most favorite songs from the group! The song is so much fun, and they looked like they had fun doing it too. 2010 was the group’s big breakout year, and this was the lead single from their 4th EP, “Lights Go On Again”. It would also be their first song to reach #1 on the charts. I will forever love Music Core's random outdoor stages lol.
#1 Kara “Jumping”
This song was first released as one of the singles from their Japanese debut album. It would peak at #2 in Japan. A week later, a Korean version was released as part of their 4th EP of the same name. It took me a while to get into this song, but it hasn’t left my playlist since. This week, let’s check the Japanese version of the song with a concert stage from a Karasia Tour date at the Tokyo Dome in 2013. They’re so gorgeous in their "Pandora" era costumes! I miss them all so much.
Honorable Mentions
#4 Orange Caramel “A-ing”
This was the second single that the After School unit group released in their debut year. Both the album the song came from, “The Second Mini Album”, and the song itself would chart in the top ten. The song is actually the last thing I remember from this era lol. I remember the styling the most. But their styling is always so memorable! They were dressed up in a fairytale style in a lot of the stages and also in the music video. So cute! Let’s check out their comeback stage at Music Core.
#7 PSY “Right Now”
Still my favorite song from him. This was one of the singles from his 5th album, “PsyFive”. It was his debut under YG Entertainment, and some of his first music since 2006. “Right Now” was the highest charting song from the album. The song was banned by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family for the “obscene” lyric "Life is like toxic alcohol". Lo so dirty. Still won at the music shows, MMA, and MAMA. Here’s a stage at the Beautiful Concert show. He does have a gift for making everyone so hype.
