SISTAR’s Hyolyn wants more plastic surgery - but is too afraid to get it.

January 7’s broadcast of Mnet’s Beatles Code 3D continued to feature Hyolyn, Tae Jin Ah and Lee Jung as guests.

During the show, Hyolyn showed off her rapping skills through Yoon Mirae’s song Memories, confessing, “I actually like rapping more than singing. I’ve always wanted to show you this side of me, since I always just sing on stage.”

MC Shin Dong Yeop praised her by saying, “You are good at rapping, singing and even have a pretty face. Don’t get plastic surgery later on,” to which Hyolyn answered, “I want to get surgery.”

Then she added, “But I’m scared to. I do okay with shots or IV needles, but when something comes near my face, I get really scared.”

“It doesn’t hurt as much as you think, I know because I’ve gotten the surgery on my eyes,” said MC Shindong. “But you’ve had your eyes done too.”

“I just wanted to just get a slight fix to my lids, but when I came out of the operation room, I had cuts on them (to make double eye lids),” confessed Hyolyn.

People have become generous about celebrity love affairs, but not always
By Park Si-soo

Korea’s single stars have traditionally opted to keep their love affairs off the public radar. In doing so, some have been accidently caught dating with concealed faces using sunglasses, masks or caps.

But lately, a growing number of young celebrities are breaking from that custom by making public their romantic relationships.

The latest examples are Yoona and Sooyoung, members of K-pop sensation Girls’ Generation. Photos of both dating their respective celebrity boyfriends — singer Lee Seung-gi and actor Jung Kyung-ho — were released last week by paparazzi news outlets. Although the two could have easily downplayed the rumors of their romantic relationships they instead opted to be open and honest about their new beaus.

Convicted and bankrupt people banned from running agencies
By Park Si-soo

Starting in the second half of this year, establishing an entertainment agency in Korea will only be possible after approval from the government.

The regulation endorsed by the National Assembly on New Year’s Eve will help prevent young and naive singer and actor aspirants — estimated to be nearly one million nationwide — from falling victim to “rogue” agents who have been accused of exploiting their clients in a bid to maximize profits. It will take six months for the rule to clear all administrative procedures and go into effect.

Koreans are watching more local films than ever, not that they have any say in it
By Yun Suh-young

Kim Seon-hee has eagerly awaited the Korean release of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the second installment of Peter Jackson’s Tolkien trilogy that rapidly became a global hit.

Never did she imagine she would have a hard time finding a theater that was showing it.

With independent theaters going the way of the dodo bird, most Koreans now watch their movies at multiplexes owned by chaebol groups Lotte and CJ, which are enjoying a virtual duopoly in the market. After probing the Internet, Kim found that Lotte Cinema was showing “Smaug” in only five of its theaters in Seoul. CGV, the CJ franchise, avoided the movie entirely.

Kim did end up watching the film at the old Daehan Theater in central Seoul, which required a longer trip from her home than she would have preferred.

“The experience felt unfair. This is one of the biggest works in world cinema this year and it’s snubbed by a large number of screens,” she said.

The Korean cinema is in the thick of a commercial renaissance. More than 200 million tickets were sold at theaters in 2013, a staggering number in a country where the economically-active population is measured at around 25 million.

Balancing Love, Race and Culture

By Kim Young-jin

After Jenny, an American, decided to move to Busan to teach English, she researched the expat dating scene in Korea. And then she resigned herself to being single.

“A lot of people say that Western guys in Korea only want to date Korean girls and Korean guys only want to date Korean girls,” she said. Such views weren’t completely accurate, however. “There are men who are exceptions.”

She eventually began going out with a Korean, a “rebellious and unique” man who “liked being different.” But her initial expectations reflected common perceptions about dating here, where it’s more common to see heterosexual couples of expatriate men and Korean women, than vice-versa.

The number of Korean man-expat woman couples appears to be on the rise, however. While data on expat dating patterns are difficult to come by, longtime observers say the increase is visible in hip areas such as Seoul’s Itaewon and Hongdae districts.

This may seem a matter of course, given the rapid growth of the foreign population, whose number recently surpassed 1.5 million. Still, it raises intriguing questions in a country where locals often joke about how Korean women are coveted for their beauty while the men are disregarded for having diminutive bodies.

so, this article kind of says things y'all already know, however, I was pleased that there was some (SOME) discussion regarding the difficulties Asian men and Black women face dating outside their race in South Korea (cause all these expat articles are generally like foreign = western = white which like, nah).

Blue, one of the authors of the Korean culture, movies, and drama blog Electric Ground, put together an awesome compilation of Go Ara's interviews from after Answer Me 1994 finished airing. She kindly translated them to share with fellow Go Ara and other AM1994 fans. As I am on a mission to spread the awesomeness that is GO ARA, I wanted to share this great compilation here as well. It's a great read that shows how hard working and committed she is to acting, as well as her drive to improve.

On her pre-Answer Me 1994 image…

Go Ara shared, “I didn’t realize that I had such a strong urban, princess-like image. Through Answer Me 1994, I learned that people had a huge preconception of me.” She continued, “I’m not a city princess. I am a country bumpkin. In fact, my personality is similar to Sung Na-jeong’s.” [Laughs] (via Newsen)

“Even when living in Jinju City in South Gyeongsang province, we lived in the outskirts of the city. And so I didn’t realize that I had such a [princess-like] image. I can’t even wear lace dresses normally. But before I knew it, whenever I went to filming, people looked upon me like I was a doll. Director-nim told me, ‘What people think of you is even beyond what you think. You must get a grip of reality.’ He asked me whether I would be able to do scenes where I eat a lot, fart, or have a deep love line. And yet, Director-nim already had an idea of who I really was. I had first met Director Shin Won Ho at the KBS building when I was working on the drama Sharp. As I was a rookie actress then, I went around to greet everyone. He told me that he remembered me from when I greeted him loudly inside the elevator.” (via Ilgan Sports)

Article: The problem with Rainbow is their song!

Source: Hankyeorae via Naver

3. [+1,012, -14] I feel like DSP put Rainbow in a bad spot. A and Mach were songs that definitely could've shot them up but their coordi and visual concepts just didn't live up to the song quality. They have decent songs, just that the members don't have anything that helps them stand out since they all look the same, have the same clothes, same hair... And when they were on the rise with Sweetune songs, DSP shipped them over to Japan, which didn't end up going all that well either. Then they randomly pull out Daishi Dance for their Korean comeback... To Me and Sweet Dream were decent songs but not enough or what they needed ㅠ People wanted another A or Mach... and then again, another random cute concept ㅠ Not a Rainbow fan but I do like them and it's disappointing to see them up in the air like this.

Singer K.Will is currently recording an all-kill as the number 1 spot on 10 different music charts with his OST for SBS drama "You Who Came from the Stars."

On the 8th K.Will released the OST "Like a Star" for SBS drama "You Who Came from the Stars." As of January 9th, this song is currently ranking number 1 on 10 different music charts, including MelOn, Mnet, Bugs, Olleh Music, Soribada, Naver Music, Daum Music, Psy Music, Monkey3, and Genie.

Even before its release the song had great expectations, especially since it's the OST of a drama that is showing record high viewership ratings with each episode. Sure enough, the song is sweeping all the major music charts, and going strong.

"Like a Star" is a medium tempo song with a full orchestra sound that complements K.Will's captivating voice. It's about a man contemplating and not being able to express his love.

Looks like there may be a possibility of Jo In Sung and Gong Hyo Jin starring in a new drama together.

On January 9, a representative of Jo In Sung’s agency disclosed to a Korean media outlet, “Jo In Sung was offered a role in ‘It’s Okay, It’s Love (working title).’ We’ve only received the synopsis.”

A representative of Gong Hyo Jin’s agency also stated, “It is true she has been offered a role and is looking over it.”

“It’s Okay, It’s Love” will be the first Korean psychiatric drama. It will portray the reality of the lives and love of modern day people who live with psychological burdens. It will attempt to give an honest and serious answer to the question, “What do you do when your heart gets a cold, or gets cancer, or gets diabetes?”

Jo In Sung is looking over the male lead role of Jang Jae Yeol, a mystery writer and a radio DJ who suffers from obsessive-compulsive neurosis. If he confirms the role, he will be working once again with Noh Hee Kyung, the writer and Kim Kyu Tae, the director behind “That Winter, The Wind Blows.” This is also one of the reasons why he is looking over the role optimistically.

Gong Hyo Jin is looking over the character of Ji Hye Soo, a first year fellow in the psychiatric department at a university hospital. She chooses psychiatry for the appeal of not having to work overtime at night and not having to conduct any surgeries. However, her life changes after she meets Jang Jae Yeol.

The drama is already receiving much interest and anticipation for the fact that writer Noh Hee Kyung will be in charge of the script. Industry insiders describe her as “an alchemist of language.” Details of when the drama will premiere have not been decided yet. Stay tuned for more updates!

Actor Yoon Sang Hyun will be returning to the TV screen as a charismatic detective.

On January 7, multiple broadcast officials confirmed Yoon Sang Hyun has been cast as the leading role for a new tvN drama, “Gapdongee” (working title).

After trying to steal money from the late actor’s bank accounts, late Park Yong Ha’s ex-manager, Ms. Lee, has been banned from working in the Korean entertainment industry.

The Corea Entertainment Management Association announced that it has decided to put a prohibition of employment on Ms. Lee after deeming her unqualified to work as a manager.

“She has caused a social disruption and left a deep scar on the workers in the industry,” stated the Association. “She has also continued to openly work at a new entertainment company while she was still being tried.” (read more here and here)

“Even after she completes her prison sentence, there is a great chance for her to be active as an entertainment manager in Japan. We will be sending information about Ms. Lee as an unqualified manager to entertainment company affiliates in Japan. We plan on restoring the reliability by informing all entertainment and relevant companies in Korea of this matter as well.”

In July of 2010, Ms. Lee attempted to withdraw around 240 million won from Park Yong Ha’s bank account using his seal a week after the actor took his own life. She also took 26 million won worth of the actor’s merchandise from the company. In these cases, she claimed she had the authority to use the money as manager and that the merchandise was something for her to remember the actor with.

In November of 2013, she was charged with forgery of private documents, forgery and fraudulent use of private writing, attempted fraud, and theft, receiving a sentence of eight months in prison.
