SPICA SECOND ANNIVERSARY FAN PROJECT - MESSAGE BOOK

9th February will be the 2nd anniversary of SPICA's debut. A few days ago, Korean Mercuries announced that they would be compiling messages from Mercuries worldwide for a message book to be given to SPICA. SPICAworld and Turn Up Speaker recently collected and translated messages from international Mercuries for a similar message book project, and have decided to combine efforts with the Korean Mercuries! If you are interested in being part of this project, please take note of the following:

1) Message format
Recipient (e.g. SPICA or specific member[s])
Content (140 character limit i.e. Twitter. We only accept Chinese or English messages.)
Your name (include your country and/or city)

2) Email your message to turn.up.speaker@gmail.com with the subject SPICA 2nd Anniversary Project.

3) The deadline for submitting your messages is 4th Feb (Tue) 6pm KST. Please be reminded that late submissions will not be translated or sent to the Korean organisers. Apologies for the tight deadline!

4) As the Korean organisers will not accept any messages in foreign languages, please do not send any non-Korean messages directly to them.

5) If you already sent your messages to SPICAworld during the previous submission period, please do not resend them. Messages that were received have already been translated and sent to the Korean organisers.

The third issue of The JYJ magazine is coming out and there are three different covers to choose from.

On February 4, C-JeS Entertained unveiled three different covers for the upcoming issue of The JYJ. The front covers were of the JYJ members, who each collaborated with three different photographers in three separate photoshoots with different concepts.

Working with famous photographers, Zo Sun Hi, Mok Na Jung, and Kim Young Jun, the JYJ members carried on their busy schedules as a musician, and actor, and a musical actor while the photographers captured the members as they worked.

The third issue of The JYJ will be released in both Korea and Japan in February. It is available for purchase through the C-JeS store.

KBS variety programme "Cool Kidz" is a fascinating programme, with it straddling many arenas. This variety programme on public broadcast networks has famous celebrities appearing behind Kang Ho Dong and as its name suggests, its aim is "neighbourhood-ization". While going around this neighbourhood and that neighbourhood, they held competitions with the surrounding neighbours in table tennis, badminton, bowling and basketball. Looking at just the concept and the scale, it seemed like a production on some cable channel. Although of course they also organized large-scale events such as one visit to Taereung or filming overseas etc, but..

Boy band CNBlue just made many Boices happy!

On February 4, FNC Entertainment announced, “CNBlue will make a comeback through its fifth mini album, which is filled with self-composed songs. Please look forward to their comeback.”

It’s been reported that leader Jung Yong Hwa composed the title track and that Lee Jong Hyun also lent his composition skills.

Although she doesn’t look it, Girl’s Day So Jin surprised viewers by revealing her worries about age.

On February 4, So Jin and the other Girl’s Day members appeared on KBS’ Hello as guests to hear out the worries of Gag Concert comedians in a special episode.

Before they heard the first worry, the MC panel asked about Girl’s Day’s worries.

A bit hesitantly, So Jin stated, “I don’t really want to say it, but the fact that I turn 30 years old next is my worry.”

The MC panel and the audience all gasped in shocked, while MC Shin Dong Yeop jokingly added, “It might have been better if you didn’t mention that.”

So Jin was born in 1986. She will be turning 30 (Korean Age) in 2015.

Soloist Rain has clarified that his upcoming new song ‘I Love You’ is not a song written with Kim TaeHee in mind.

On the 4th of February, Rain’s agency, Cube DC expressed, “Rain will be releasing a ballad track titled ‘I Love You’, a music transformation after popular ‘LA Song’”

Rain’s ‘I Love You’ is also a song that was composed and written by the starlet himself. With a magnificent accompaniment of String instruments, ‘I Love You’ is a confession song which perfectly depicts a man’s emotions when he falls in love. ‘I Love You’ starts with a sweet narration and is a song that brings the warmth during winter.

G-Dragon has proven his popularity as a Hallyu star in China.

On January 30, Chinese press Xinminwang reported that G-Dragon is the number one Korean celebrity Chinese fans want to spend the Lunar New Year with.

A poll was conducted for 15 days last month on which Korean celebrities fans would want to spend their new year holiday with. G-Dragon ranked first with 19% of the votes. Second place was actor Kim Soo Hyun (17%) and 3rd place was EXO's Luhan (16%). 2PM Nichkhun, FT Island Lee Hong Ki, EXO Kris, JYJ Park Yoo Chun, and actors Lee Min Ho and Jang Keun Suk also got votes from Chinese fans.

BIGBANG recently held concerts at the Seoul Olympics Park Gymnastics Arena. It was announced that the group will be releasing an album this summer.

SM Entertainment’s project group, SM the Ballad, announced its return with a new line-up for February. They will take a unique approach by releasing a new song every day for four days. Fans will be able to download and stream the songs on Melon, Olleh Music, Genie, and various music sites starting on the 10th.

The first song to be released will be Girls’ Generation's Taeyeon and SHINee's Jonghyun’s duet for the Korean title track, “Breath”. On the 11th, Jonghyun and EXO's Chen’s “One Day” will be released, followed by Taeyeon’s solo, “I Was Greedy” on the 12th. The rest of the songs from the album will all be released on the 13th.

Taeyeon and Jonghyun are scheduled to start off promotions for “Breath” on the 13th through Mnet’s “M!Countdown” and appear on other music programs throughout the week.

Actor Yoo Seung Ho who is currently serving in the army was revealed.

On January 16, the 27th division Recruit Training Ground revealed a picture of Yoo Seung Ho who was training recruits.

In the picture, Yoo Seung Ho was strictly training his recruits despite the cold weather.

Yoo Seung Ho is currently serving in the army as a recruit trainer. He will be finishing his duty on December 4.

We have checked and organized things in regards to the 10asia interview together along with the contents of the fans’ requests for changes. Just like what the many fans have said, this is Jellyfish’s first time entering the idol market together with VIXX, and a lot of things are done through trial and error. We are not boasting because VIXX has achieved particular results. The road we have to walk is further, and we recognize that it’s a road that we have to walk together with the fans. We acknowledge that we are lacking, and will try our best to only show a more developed side of us in the future.

Vixx claimed EXO to be one of its only celebrity friends.

Feberuary 4’s broadcast of Mnet’s The Beatles Code 3D featured Narsha, Rainbow Blaxx and Vixx as special guests.

During the show, Vixx was asked, “Do you think that your popularity couldn’t go up because of EXO?” and answered “No.”

Vixx’s Leo said, “They’re one of our only celebrity friends. They’re also too big to be called our rivals now.”

Then N added, “EXO might be receiving much more love from the public, but we are working hard on our music too. I think in that sense, we’re not far behind them.”

Meanwhile, N confessed that he received love calls from the three major agencies due to his unique dance skills before debuting, and showed some of his edgy dance movements on the spot, getting loud applause.

"Gag Concert" has used blackface on their most recent episode to the shock of many international viewers.

The corner “Nom Nom Nom” used it in their skit where comedian Yoo Insuk said he would buy coffee for Song Pilgeun’s girlfriend Ahn Somi. Song stated, “Our Somi only drinks Americano” in rebuttal and, to this, Yoo introduced a group of indigenous Africans from the coffee machine saying, “here is the highest quality coffee brought straight from the source.” Unfortunately, these “indigenous Africans” were represented by blackface.

The Korean media, however, focused on the fact that Hong Yeseul’s normally cute image could not be seen in this get-up as she was one of the comedians in blackface.

This was a different response from that of international viewers who were surprised, shocked, and some even offended by the nonchalant airing of what they considered racism.

As blackface has been used not uncommonly in Korean variety shows to represent those of African heritage, viewers are beginning to debate whether this is a case of blatant racism or simple ignorance.

Some past uses of blackface in Korean media include on “Saturday Nigh Live Korea” in December 2011 and most recently G-Dragon’s Instagram selca last year.
