OMONA ORIGINAL: The K in K-pop - songs that use Korean tradition, history & culture [pt 2]

It’s probably not a surprise to anyone familiar with Korean history that Koreans have a complex relationship with their own native culture. A lot of what is considered traditionally Korean was phased out, left behind or even actively eschewed as part of the post-colonial, post-war, sub-38th desperation to modernize and stabilize as quickly as humanly possible. Many of the most obvious markers of classic Korean life were replaced, erased, or even rejected as relics of pre-modern unworldliness, poverty, and devastation. So hanboks and hanoks were put away and torn down, polyester and concrete taking their place as Korea moved forward in a stilted race to escape the hazards of being a poor, damaged, weak country that the rest of the world could afford to ignore. Simply in terms of the looks and sounds of everyday life, the Korea of the 1950s-60s and the Korea of today have astoundingly little in common.

I was really hoping it wouldn't take this long to get part 2 up but due to a wave of irl stuff, this got back-burnered for a while. I've had this tab open for TWO WEEKS and I can finally let it go lmao ^_T

Bad and Crazy episode 1-6 discussion post

Synopsis:
Soo Yeol, the competent ‘bad boy’ on the police squad, regains his humanity after meeting ‘K’, the righteous but ‘crazy’ guy. Despite having a mere high school diploma, Soo Yeol is an accomplished member of the drug squad. He’s ambitious, so he chooses pet cases of his superiors and produces their desired outcomes. Often that means turning a blind eye to injustice, especially if it stands in the way of those preferred results.
With promotion time looming and without anyone’s backing, Soo Yeol fears exclusion once again. Congressman Do Yoo Gon had given him some hope of advancement but dashed when the righteous but crazy ‘K’ entered his life.
What can go wrong when the ‘bad boy’ and the ‘crazy’ guy join forces?
Starring:
Lee Dongwook, Wi Hajoon, Han Ji Eun, VIXX N (Cha Hakyeon)

1-Copious amounts of Lee Dongwook and Wi Hajoon flirting and shirtlessness. Bad and Crazy, more like Bad and Tiddies.
2-Buddy cop dynamics.
3-Humor with a dash of murder mystery and intrigue.

1-Violence. Not really gorey but people get beat up a lot and there are some graphic scenes.
2-Campy over-the-top fight scenes.
3-Not medically accurate depictions of mental health (I have to be vague in case people aren't past episode 2).

#3 Yoon Hyun Sang featuring IU “When Would It Be”
Yoon Hyun Sang signed with LOEN after his top ten finish on the first season of K-Pop Star. This song, a duet with his labelmate IU, would be his debut. The song, as with all the songs on the “Pianoforte” album, were written by Hyun Sang himself. IU had heard it, and wanted the song for herself, but the company suggested a duet instead. So here it is. They sound lovely together.

Flashback Friday

Hey party people, happy Friday! Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. Let’s see out what was on top for the 1st week of September, 2016. 5 years ago now! A whole hand! Most of the songs were posted before, so we will see some comeback stages.

#3 I.O.I “Whatta Man (Good Man)”
I’ve only really listened to the song once, from when I posted the MV last time. I have memories of the Salt-N-Pepa/En Vogue song, so I always avoided this one from the opening line lol. This was a song featuring the 7 members who made up I.O.I’s unit group. The song would debut and peak at #2 on the charts. It was also be the group’s first ever music show win. Here’s the group’s M Countdown comeback stage, with its choreography from Chungha.

VIXX's N leaves Jellyfish Entertainment and joins 51K

On November 3rd, it was shared by SportsDonga that VIXX's leader N (Cha Hakyeon) has decided to not renew his contract after 8 years with the company following contract expirations. N is shared to have joined 51K and is in the final stages of joining the management. 51K is home to So Jisub and 2PM's Ok Taecyeon. It is expected that N will likely be working towards becoming an actor similarly like 2PM's Ok Taecyeon who has moved to the agency to focus on his acting career.

N who had made his military enlistment last March and had joined the band recently was discharged on October 7th and plans to focus on his acting career. N made his acting debut in 2014 with "Hotel King" on MBC, later appearing in OCN's "Tunnel" in 2017, and tvN's "아는 와이프 (Familiar Wife)" in 2018. N also played an important supporting role in "붉은 달 푸른 해 (Red Moon Blue Sun)" that was released last year.

N made his debut May 2012 through boy group VIXX. N has appeared in many forms of entertainment within the industry including singing, acting, and varieties.

Jellyfish Entertainment confirmed that VIXX's N has decided not to renew his contract following contract expiration on October 31st. N will however, still remain in VIXX and take part in VIXX activities.

Back on civvy street: Three K-pop stars discharged from military

SHINee's Key, 2AM's Jinwoon and VIXX's N returned to civilian life on Wednesday after completing their mandatory military service. The three were discharged after enjoying their final leave and did not return to their base due to coronavirus concerns.

"I am back in good condition as I promised," Key wrote on SHINee's online fan community Wednesday. "Thank you for waiting for me. Please look forward to my future plans."

Jinwoon said through his agency MYSTIC STORY: "I truly appreciate my fans for waiting for me and I hope we can meet up soon."

"I learned a lot of things during my service," N said on his Instagram. "I give my support to those who are still fulfilling their duties. Thank you for waiting and supporting."

The three enlisted in March 2019 and joined the military band.

VIXX N (aka the only member of VIXX we acknowledge, Cha Hakyeon) was released from his military service yesterday. He was given an early release due to COVID-19, as he was originally scheduled for a discharge on October 7th along with Key from Shinee.

OP notes it's too bad he got out a few weeks too late to beat Hongbin's ass before he enlisted. Shame. At least we were blessed with these pics of his graceful swan neck.

I checked out of VIXX the second he enlisted lol, I guess it's time to care again! Do y'all think they will even bother continuing as a group at this point? I'm here for a Hakyeon solo, idc. Also, I wonder how many other idols will be getting out early now. Their services fly by faster and faster.
