Hey party people, happy Friday! Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. Let’s see out what was on top for the 1st week of September, 2016. 5 years ago now! A whole hand! Most of the songs were posted before, so we will see some comeback stages.
#3 I.O.I “Whatta Man (Good Man)”
I’ve only really listened to the song once, from when I posted the MV last time. I have memories of the Salt-N-Pepa/En Vogue song, so I always avoided this one from the opening line lol. This was a song featuring the 7 members who made up I.O.I’s unit group. The song would debut and peak at #2 on the charts. It was also be the group’s first ever music show win. Here’s the group’s M Countdown comeback stage, with its choreography from Chungha.
#2 Blackpink “Whistle”
This was one of the two songs that the group made their debut with. I remember waking up to the two music videos and watching them before coming on Omona. I preferred (and still do) “Whistle”, but everyone was talking about the other song and it made me feel like I was missing out lol. “Whistle” would debut at the top spot, making it the group’s first #1 song, where it would stay for a few weeks. Here’s their first performance of the song, from their music show debut on Inkigayo.
#1 EXO “Lotto”
I can never place this song by the name, but when I hear it I know it’s the one with the lip tint lol. Remember that lip tint was everywhere back then? This was the lead single from the repackaged album of the same name. The song was deemed unfit for broadcast by a few networks because it referred to a brand (lottery ticket). So they swapped “lotto” for “louder” in the track name and the lyrics, and were allowed to promote on MBC, KBS, and Mnet. Here’s the “Louder” comeback stage at Music Core.
Honorable Mentions
#6 VIXX “Fantasy”
This was the single from the group’s single album, “Hades”. It was the second part of their “VIXX 2016 Conception” trilogy, in between “Zelos” and “Kratos”. I don’t remember any of the songs from the trilogy, which is weird for me because I usually remember something. The song was released just the day before the start of their “Elysium” tour, where the first live performances would take place.
#7 Wonder Girls “Why So Lonely”
This was a release to celebrate the girls’ 10th anniversary. It was their first single that was not written by JYP, and instead written by Sunmi, Lim, Yubin, and songwriter Hong Jisang. The group also played their own instruments on the track. It would hit the top spot on the charts and in my heart tbh. The song would win four music show trophies, their first music show wins since “Like That” in 2012. “Why So Lonely” would end up as their penultimate release. Here’s the group’s comeback stage at M Countdown. Miss them so much!

Date: 2021-09-04 04:49 am (UTC)I was very excited to see Jennie debut and she was singing this time around as well.
Lotto grew onto me, but it‘s not my favourite track. I still remember listening to “She’s dreaming”. That was my late summer/ fall jam.
I didn’t know Ioi did their ver. of Whatta Man.
Oh the times when Vixx were all over the place. I never really got into them, but Error, Trigger and Love Me Do were songs I constantly listened to. And let’s not forget UUUU.
I loved the cb news and the promos to WG’s cb, but the song turned out different than I imagine. But I listen to the track when I’m in the mood

Date: 2021-09-04 05:16 am (UTC)i really do miss vixx's theatre-boy asses... fantasy's a fantastic song, so melo, so dramatic.

Date: 2021-09-04 06:55 am (UTC)I really enjoyed ioi's whatta man, i knew the original but was pretty ok to accept the remix as it had a totally different vibe and i didn't feel like it was stepping on the original's toes. I also liked it because it gave certain members a chance to actually have decent lines (doyeon/pinky) and for other members to finally get their rap/vocal spotlight (yoojung/chungha).
However i didn't like it because, like everyone else, i was grossed out by seeing one 15yo, 2 16yo's, and 2 17yo's in promo and performance outfits that were fashions inspired by bondage gear (chungha and nayoung were 20 at the time also which is fine i guess but when paired with children....eh). I also don't remember if we ever cleared up if chungha got paid for her choreography? Anyway I enjoyed the song and the performances but there were definitely downsides to the era

Date: 2021-09-04 09:28 am (UTC)and me too, OP. i preferred whistle, boombayah was too all over the place and that.. CA. yea.

Date: 2021-09-04 10:40 am (UTC)Whistle is still better than Boombayah, and nothing can change my mind about it

Date: 2021-09-04 12:36 pm (UTC)Disagree with omona Whistle is a bore to me. It’s the type of midtempo songs that do jack shit for me. I much prefer the classic YG/Teddy sound in Boombayah but the CA in it soured it for me too, I wish it was just edited out since it was so unnecessary. Just shows BP started off on the wrong foot for me and it didn’t help as I already was annoyed with YG shelving 2NE1.
Why So Lonely is incredible, WG really ended on a high note! It has aged really well too. The girls looked so cool on stage too. Hope I can see these 4 be reunited again (maybe the original lineup when they were at their peak but really this version of WG is my favorite.)

Date: 2021-09-04 01:45 pm (UTC)boombayah is so much better but the CA makes me feel uncomfortable, but if we ignore that part, the song is much better to me

Date: 2021-09-04 07:12 pm (UTC)I miss debut Blackpink :/
Lotto is one of my least favorite EXO title tracks but Lay looked hot back then.

Date: 2021-09-05 03:20 am (UTC)Lotto is a jam, it is such an earworm because the lyrics really do get stuck in your head lol
Whistle was definitely the superior title track, but it was Boombayah that caught my attention first. Whistle is still one of the best tracks that BP ever released, periodt!
Ugh, Why So Lonely was EVERYTHING! I loved everything about this era! Sucks that it was the last WG song but at least my unnies went out on a high note.

Date: 2021-09-05 04:59 am (UTC)Beautiful Boy on the other hand? WHEW. That song still gets played weekly on my Spotify. It's criminal how good that song is. I'm glad one of my favorite groups created something so (no pun intended) wonderful.
Shoutout to everyone who got that Beautiful Boy vinyl, I still check eBay every now and again to see if anyone is selling their copy. I NEED IT!
