Q: It’s Your First Solo Album. How Does It Feel?
A: It still feels awkward. I think it’s because this is my first one and I never ever thought I’d do a solo.
Q: Was There An Event That Led To Your Solo?
A: I think the time just came naturally.
Q: You’ve Been Writing, Composing Songs Since FTISLAND. You Must’ve Felt Closer To This Since It’s Your Solo Album.
A: Yes. Except for the title song, I worked on almost all of them. I added a variety of genre. I really didn’t have much time to prepare for it. I had to go on a tour in between too. I think I was under a lot of stress. I pulled many all-nighters , wrote the song and had to arrange it while I was on tour. While I was in Japan, I also had to communicate with my studio in Korea. From making phone calls to texts, and writing lyrics every second I got, I thought I was going crazy.
Q: That Sounds Stressful Just Hearing About It. Anyways, This Is Your First Time Without A Band. What Kind Of Songs Do You Have?
A: I have 2 ballad songs, a south pop, EMD, old synth pop and one glitch pop.
Q: That’s A Lot Of Different Genres.
A: Yes. I have trendy music too. So overall, listening to it won’t be boring.
Q: EDM Is Unexpected.
A: I really like DM (Laugh).
Q: Other Than Rock, What Kind Of Genre Are You Interested it?
A: There aren’t really any other than rock. But there is one I’m interested in. Those kind of music with just one keyboard and one vocal. Songs that really depend on vocal’s colors. I’m still making them.
Q: Then Do You Think Those Kind Of Vocal-Central Songs Are Only Possible For Skilled Vocalists Like Hongki?
A: There are many talented vocalists lately. I’m rather confident about my own vocal tone. So I’m excited each time we release an album. I want to bring out what I consider a unique vocal tone and make FTISLAND’s own color.
Q: When You Said You Are Releasing A Solo Album, How Did FTISLAND Members React?
A: I asked them before I decided on the solo album. They are the people I care about the most. Before, I had told our fans but I never planned for solo only for my own dream. But if I release a solo album as FTISLAND’s main vocalist and this succeeds to help FTISLAND, I considered trying it. If that happens, I said I’ll try my best. The members supported and helped me a lot. They came to visit me in my studio often.
Q: But You Are Now Korea’s Best Vocalist.
A: Am I? (Laughs)
Q: Of Course. There’s No Place For You To Rest Even Outside Korea.
A: I think I always did what I wanted to do regardless of anyone recognizing me.
Q: What Do You Usually Do When You Go Overseas?
A: I go shopping. Our leader really likes figures. Bearbrick. Whenever we go on tours, he always goes looking for those. I always go shopping for clothes.
Q: You Are Famous For Your Interest. I Heard Your Brand ‘Skullhong’ Will Be Sold On Off-Line Stores. How Is It?
A: It’s fun but the more I do it, I feel more pressured.
Q: You Design Too?
A: I can’t draw well but I tell what I’m thinking to my team members. We come up with a design that way or if I explain a feeling or point, they turn that into a concept. I revise it and we talk about it a lot. Like that, we make small corrections
Q: What’s Your Favorite Style Lately?
A: Anything that’s comfortable (laughs). Before, I wore a lot of skinny jeans but now, I like loose fits the best. Ah, I’m hooked on shirts lately. You know the loose styles. I think I bought so many lately.
Q: Design, Acting, Musical… Do You Enjoy Taking On A New Challenge?
A: I’ve acted since I was young. I tried a genre called musical for the first time. It surprised me.. It was so much fun. Acting while singing, all that’s LIVE! It felt refreshing to feel the moment right there.
Q: Your Life Is Work.
A: Working on music can be considered work, but I do it because it’s fun. I don’t know what I don’t like. It’s so fun composing my own song and adding lyrics. Honestly, I started changing since ‘Pray.’ I started having more concerns and I think that’s when the general public started to see us kids who do real music. Men started coming to our concerts and that made it more fun. I’m making music in various genre too. Recently, I bought a synth keyboard and started making sound…this is so fun.
Q: I Think I Saw It On Instagram.
A: This is really amazing. The sound is awesome. The visual is a killer. This is the most famous one for synth sound. I’m so happy. As soon as I got it, I made a FTISLAND song right away. Would like to listen to the intro?
