South Korea has proposed holding working-level talks with North Korea later this month on joint pest control near ancient tombs in the North, an official said Wednesday, in an apparent bid to help ease lingering tension on the divided Korean Peninsula. The offer was delivered to the North Tuesday via the border village of Panmunjom, which separates the two Koreas, the official from the Unification Ministry said.
The North told the South through a Panmunjom channel it has not received a reply from Pyongyang, the official said. The move came a week after Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik said Seoul was considering providing support to the North for effective pest control near the ancient tombs, which also have historical significance to South Korea.
The Complex of Koguryo tombs, located in the North's cities of Pyongyang and Nampo, consists of 30 individual tombs from the late period of the Koguryo Kingdom, which controlled the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China for more than 700 years until 668 A.D. The relics, along with murals inside the tombs, became the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the communist North in 2004, in recognition of their historical and aesthetic value.
Last month, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said it will help North Korea eradicate pests in forests near the ancient tombs. (Yonhap)

Lawmaker says half of illegal drugs here are produced in NK
By Kim Young-jin
Is the cash-strapped North Korean regime fueling the illicit drugs trade in the South?
That is the claim being made by Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun of the ruling Saenuri Party, who estimated earlier this week that over half of illegal drugs on the local market are produced in the North after arriving by way of traffickers operating in China. Yoon, who sits on the National Assembly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee, said trafficking along the North Korea-China border was increasing and that some 57 percent of the 8,200 grams of foreign-produced methamphetamines seized in the South in 2010 came from China. “It is estimated that a large part of that comes from the North,” he said.

Veteran singer Park Ji Yoon has revealed that she felt betrayed and abandoned by her former agencies.
On February 7th, Park Ji Yoon guested on cable channel Story On‘s talk show, ‘Lee Mi Sook’s Bad Scene’, where she opened up about her past struggles.
The singer began by explaining why she left her former agency, JYP Entertainment. “The period after my promotions for my 6th album, ‘I Know How‘, was around the time when my contract with the agency was supposed to end. I worked hard over the years, but I wasn’t thought of as family, and was left alone. It saddened me,” she said.
Since Park Ji Yoon withdrew from the music scene for a long while, MC Lee Mi Sook commented, “If you had remained at JYP, you might not have had to go through such hard times for the past six years.”
Park Ji Yoon replied, “It seemed like they didn’t really want me. Although talks of re-signing went back and forth, in the end, the deal fell apart.”
This wasn’t the end of her troubles. She continued, “I went into a new agency, and although I’m a person who was pretty well-known to the public, the CEO of the agency tried to persuade me to get plastic surgery… When I reflected upon the situation later on, I realized that they were trying to tell me that I should leave on my own. I was hurt.”
Park Ji Yoon will be participating in tvN‘s ‘Opera Star Season 2′, in addition to releasing her new album in mid-February.

Last Sunday he posted, "Yuna, who used to only drink milk, is drinking coffee. It seems like she intends to quit sports and just be a celebrity."
Kim Yuna’s latest endorsement is for a product from Maxim, filming a CF for a white gold coffee called "Yuna Coffee." Netizens who read Douglas Kim’s tweets responded favorably to the Olympic star and called Douglas Kim out on his unfounded attacks.
Netizens commented, "This is just an undisguised attack," “This is twisting the events way too much," "Is this revenge for some kind of bad judgment?"
Douglas Kim appeared to apologize after the news of these attacks spread and he removed the related tweets, "It seems like there has been a misunderstanding about my tweet, I never intended to slander Kim Yuna. I apologize."
Kim Yuna and her former agency, IB SPORTS, were in the midst of a legal battle until just recently. In the lawsuit that Kim Yuna filed against IB SPORTS, she demanded her unpaid wages of 9 million won ($8,064 USD). The court ruled in favor of Kim Yuna, and ordered IB SPORTS to pay the gold medalist 8 million won ($7,168 USD).

The man is alleged to have set up the altar in central Seoul to honour Kim Jong-il, who died in December.
Police say that he also spread pro-North Korea material on the internet.
Both activities are banned under a controversial South Korean law outlawing any praise or sympathy for "anti-government organisations" or the sharing of "anti-state" publications.
Human rights groups say the National Securities Law (NSL) is now being increasingly used to silence government critics. They have called for the NSL to be reformed or abolished.
The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says the number of people interrogated under the law has reportedly tripled under the current administration.
Last month, South Korean political activist Park Jeonggeun was arrested for re-tweeting the message "Long live Kim Jong-il" from North Korea's official Twitter account.
"My intention was to lampoon North Korea's leaders for a joke," he told Amnesty International. "I did it for fun."
Mr Park is a member of the South Korean Socialist Party, which openly and frequently criticises the North Korean regime. He could face up to seven years in jail.

Big Bang has released several successful singles and EPs. Their first release, the EP Always (2007), spawned the number-one single "Lies". The follow-up EPs Hot Issue and Stand Up were similarly successful.
After they received the "Artist of the Year" award from the M.net KM Music Festival and the Seoul Gayo Daesang Award, the group expanded their activities into Japan, releasing mini-albums and airplay singles. Their materials did not receive major promotion until the following year with the release of their first physical Japanese single, "My Heaven". Since then, the group has attained considerable success in the country.
They became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for "Best Newcomer", and the first from Korea to receive the Japan Records award.
In recent years, the members have branched out to do solo activities: Taeyang and G-Dragon have released solo materials while T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have started acting (in both dramas and musicals) and participating in variety programs.
Representing Asia-Pacific, Big Bang emerged as the inaugural Best Worldwide Act winner of 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) held at Belfast, Northern Ireland. There, apart from Queen, Big Bang was the only winner not from North America.
Big Bang show in HCM City will be held at the Phu Tho Racecourse, with the participation of some Vietnamese stars.

South Korea: A Mongolian’s view
2012-02-08 08:54 pmOne of the most interesting things about Korea is its flexibility. Economically, Korea is already fully developed, which is intriguing when one remembers the number tragedies that have befallen Korea throughout its rich history. Today Korea is a vibrant and prosperous place, modern and fast moving but is also fiercely traditional and historically aware.
Korea has a culture-history that can be found not only in the landscape that has shaped the people of Korea, but also in the legacies of people from other countries, in particular China and Japan.

2011 was without a doubt one of the worst years for YG Entertainment, a company that houses some of K-Pop’s most recognizable names. From Daesung’s car accident to the controversy surrounding G-Dragon’s alleged use of marijuana, the past year has left a large dent onto not only the two aforementioned idols, but on to the company’s image as well. While the incidents involving the two idols have become resolved one way or the other, Yang Hyun Suk, founder and CEO of the company has expressed much hope for 2012. He envisions 2012 as the year to recover the company financially and to mend YG’s controversy-stricken image.

In a recent interview with OSEN, YG Entertainment’s founder and chairman Yang Hyun Suk discussed for the first time why he almost shed tears on SBS "K-Pop Star." On January 22, he admitted on the show that he was almost brought to tears after watching the Su Pearl’s performance. OMG YAYYY!!!! ESSITED!
The government on Tuesday banned adolescents from renting private rooms that can be rented by the hour to sing karaoke or play video games. The decision follows claims that teenagers increasingly use them to have sex.
The decision concerns so-called "multi-bang" businesses, from the Korean word for "room" (bang). They started emerging two or three years ago in Seoul’s Sinchon and Jongno areas, which are gathering places for young people.
Each room, measures about 15 sq.m and has a karaoke machine, DVD player, large screen, and a computer. Customers can sit comfortably on a long couch.
Most of these rooms are designed so it is difficult to see in from the outside, and some have a bed and bedding available, creating a perfect environment for young people to have sex.
