Disputes brew over Dokdo, textbooks, East Sea name

By Park Si-soo

South Korea’s diplomatic relationship with Japan will likely further deteriorate in the months to come over ongoing history disputes between the two countries. The prediction is based on a string of annual events that are scheduled from later this month to April in what appears to be a revival of Japan’s imperial ambitions. These events are likely to provoke Koreans who are extremely sensitive to any such matters as a result of Japan’s colonization of the peninsula between 1910 and 1945. Some analysts here don’t rule out the possibility that the expected crack in Seoul-Tokyo ties could be wider than previous years, citing widespread nationalism in Japanese politics amid the worsening recession.

Last week, K-pop supergroup Girls’ Generation got an unprecedented U.S. television showcase on “Live! With Kelly,” the Reegeless morning show currently featuring Kelly Ripa and a revolving-door series of daily guest hosts. For those who caught it, the segment offered up one of television’s rare magic moments — not during the musical performance itself, but in the brief interview immediately afterwards.

The Girls had just pulled off a crowd-pumping rendition of their first U.S. single, “The Boys,” complete with their signature precision choreography, and stood posed and slightly breathless onstage to receive Ripa and her cohost du jour, Howie Mandel. Ripa and Mandel congratulated the girls on their Stateside appearance in full-on talking-to-foreigners mode, speaking loud and slow, and making big, evocative gestures with their hands.

"I'll treat today!"

Shouldn't such a day be considered a true 'lottery win'? To be able to eat with the oppa of their dreams, it is to the extent that these fans must still have been half-asleep. An unexpected surprise birthday party. For U-Know Yunho and the fans, 6 Feb was a time of special memories.

We were able to see U-Know Yunho at an eatery in Apgujeong-dong at 7pm on 6 Feb. Korean fans and Japanese fans were gathered around the eatery. We learnt that this day was U-Know Yunho's 26th birthday. Every fan had painstakingly prepared presents, and looked on as Yunho sat in the eatery.

CN Blue became the first foreign band in 41 years to top the Oricon’s weekly single chart in Japan. Since going on sale on February 1, the group’s second major Japanese single, “Where You Are,” sold over 60,000 copies in the first week of its release, topping both the daily and weekly charts.

According to Oricon, this is the first time for a foreign band to achieve the feat since the Mexican band, “Mashmakhan,” did with their 1971 single, “As the Years Go By.” CN Blue’s new single comes with “Where You Are,” written and produced by Jung Yong Hwa, “Get Away,” written by Lee Jong Hyun, and ”Feeling.”

CN Blue’s Japanese debut single, “In My Head,” sold over 100,000 copies last year, being recognized as a gold level record. They also became the first Korean artist to perform at the “MTV Unplugged” concert in Japan earlier this week. CN Blue will embark on a Japanese fan club live tour starting from February 13.

Singer Kangta announced his plans to made a comeback in the first half of 2012.

Kangta was present at the MnetVoice Korea‘ press conference that was held in Seoul on February 7th along with fellow ‘Voice Korea’ coaches Shin Seung Hun, Leessang‘s Gil, Baek Ji Young, and ‘Voice Korea’ CP, Kim Ki-oong.

It was here that the singer announced, “I’m planning to make a comeback early this year. I’m working on a new album, and because it’s my first in 4 years, I want to return with something new and am even receiving dance instructions on the side.”

He also opened up about a possible H.O.T reunion that the public keeps bringing up. “I think all of us members really do want to make it happen. We have discussed a reunion in the past, but there’s a lot of factors that come into play. Like the time availability for everyone, and there’s a lot to work that must happen before it can actually come about. Because of these hinderances, all of us are really cautious about bringing it up.”

‘Voice Korea’ is the Korean version of ‘The Voice of Holland‘ that was first aired in the Netherlands in 2010. The U.S. launched an American version of the show through NBC in 2011, starring pop star Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Maroon 5‘s Adam Levine, and Cee Lo Green as the panel judges.

Contestants will try out through a blind auditioning process, and the judges must make their decision upon hearing only their voice, without seeing their appearance or knowing anything about them.

The first episode airs February 10th at 11:00PM.

Following the American release of their latest album, ‘The Boys‘, Girls’ Generation will now be bringing ‘The Boys’ to France!

On February 7th, a representative from SM Entertainment revealed, “Girls’ Generation will officially be releasing their album, ‘The Boys’, through Universal Music Group’s Polydor Records.

Girls’ Generation’s release of their album in Europe is a large step for the Korean music industry. It’s being reported that while co-ed group Koreana had released a single through Polydor Records in France back in 1970, Girls’ Generation are the first Korean singers to release a formal album in Europe.

The girl group recently took off for Paris to attend a music event at the Bercy stadium in Paris.

11-member mixed group Coed's male unit has decided on their debut name.

Coed's agency Core Contents Media said on the 8th to Star News, "The man unit's name is 스피드 (SPEED). Everyone agreed and settled on this name together because of it's interchangeable meaning."

They continued, "The existing Coed members Sky-Earth Yoosung, Sage Taewoon, Rascal Kwanghaeng, Balance Noori and Solid Sungmin are joined by another new member, Shin Jongkook who appeared in 'Superstar K3' to make a total of six." Jongkook received compliments for his good pitch and "made it onto Super Week with much praises but unfortunately did not advance past that."

In November, Core Contents Media announced that Hot Blooded Kangho made a decision to leave Coed and focus on acting and announced the new member Shin Jongkook.

Core Contents Media continued, "SPEED's first song will be revealed on the 9th as a re-made version of T-ara's 'Lovey-Dovey' called 'Lovey-Dovey Plus', followed by a music video. SPEED's broadcast debut is still undecided as of now."

Meanwhile, Coed already also has a female sub-unit 5dolls, with members Soomi, Hyewon, Chanmi, Hyoyoung and Eunkyo.
