Big Bang is among the most outstanding representatives of the Korean wave in Asia. The band was formed by YG Entertainment in 2006. The group consists of G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri.

Big Bang has released several successful singles and EPs. Their first release, the EP Always (2007), spawned the number-one single "Lies". The follow-up EPs Hot Issue and Stand Up were similarly successful.

After they received the "Artist of the Year" award from the M.net KM Music Festival and the Seoul Gayo Daesang Award, the group expanded their activities into Japan, releasing mini-albums and airplay singles. Their materials did not receive major promotion until the following year with the release of their first physical Japanese single, "My Heaven". Since then, the group has attained considerable success in the country.

They became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for "Best Newcomer", and the first from Korea to receive the Japan Records award.

In recent years, the members have branched out to do solo activities: Taeyang and G-Dragon have released solo materials while T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have started acting (in both dramas and musicals) and participating in variety programs.

Representing Asia-Pacific, Big Bang emerged as the inaugural Best Worldwide Act winner of 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) held at Belfast, Northern Ireland. There, apart from Queen, Big Bang was the only winner not from North America.

Big Bang show in HCM City will be held at the Phu Tho Racecourse, with the participation of some Vietnamese stars.

I felt so stupid not understandin "HCM City" even if I've been there...

It's always gonna be Saigon to me.

And yeah K-pop is really popular in VN. Some Vietnamese subbing teams are faster than English ones lol.

Me too, we're always using Saigon (history for example), HCM City sounds a bit... weird.

Oh well, that's really conveniant ! I've never noticed. Maybe it's because I'm not here that often, but there doesn't seem to be much k-pop news related to Vietnam, apart from other asian countries;

(great icon !)

Can I ask where you're from? I love the idea of history classes using "Saigon", just like I love it whenever I see the flag of the old republic being used as the (rightful tbh!) Vietnamese flag ♥

Yeah it is super convenient...English subbed videos tend to be taken down more too, so if I can't find something in English I'll look for it Vietnamese subbed haha. It takes me a little longer to read the subs but I still get it!

ty!

I'm from France ! I guess it's not that surprising that I know Saigon better than HCM City then. Indochina and Vietnam is an important part in History class (well, I don't know about now but when I was in highschool) and even in literature and so, I feel like Saigon is much more used too.

Yeah right English videos are not so easy to find most of the time, I'm getting more and more on Tumblr to check gifs rather than spend ages for a video with subtitles (I'm always too late on Omona the videos are usually already taken down)

Are there many people in Vietnam that can speak Korean?

Hmm, I don't think so. There's a somewhat strong Vietnamese population in SK but I'm not sure about the SK population in Vietnam.

there's a mass of South Koreans living in District 7. it's becoming a new and fast developing area full of new modern buildings and shopping for the residents there. I went to the Lotte Mart and it's full of Koreans shopping for groceries and whatnot.

In the city of Saigon, it's common to hear kpop songs playing pretty much everywhere. seriously I was shocked to see how big the kpop invasion is. the music channels are infested with kpop too.

Kinda OT but it reminds me of the first kpop friend I made in my French class last year who was Vietnamese and super hot.
He was the biggest Big Bang fan boy I ever met and I bet he's creaming himself out there somewhere at this news.
I miss him so much :'(
