It was revealed Saturday that South Korea's consul general-elect in Hiroshima is the son of a man who experienced the 1945 atomic bombing of the city and took the lead in a campaign to win Japanese compensation for South Korean victims until his death in 1999.

''It feels like my late father is telling me, 'You should serve the cause of peace,''' Shin Hyong Gun, 57, said in an interview with Kyodo News.

''Hiroshima is the place where my father dedicated his whole life to the deepening of South Korea-Japan relations. It is my pleasure to be able to work there,'' he said. ''I would like to abide by his wishes and work on expanding peaceful ties.''

He is currently serving as consul general in Shenyang, China, and is slated to take the post as early as in March. It will be his first long-term duty in Japan.

Fearing foul play, the family of a 24-year-old Filipina who died in South Korea is seeking an investigation into her alleged suicide.

Larry Deocades, father of Cathy Deocades, said prior to her death, his daughter had complained of maltreatment by her South Korean husband. He said in November, Cathy called up the family and begged to be brought home.

Deocades said that during their conversation, his daughter said she wanted to come home because she could no longer endure the abuse she had been suffering at the hands of her husband and his family.

Cathy met her South Korean husband, whose name was not provided to the Inquirer, through a social networking site. In October 2009, they met in Manila and got married immediately.

Deocades said Cathy soon flew to South Korea with her husband, where they lived together. It was only recently that the relationship turned sour, he said.

Deocades said they even received a report that the South Korean had sold his daughter to another man.

Deocades said his family sought help from the Department of Foreign Affairs after the phone conversation with Cathy in November. After a few weeks, they were told by DFA officials that she was in good condition.

But early this year, they were told that she had committed suicide. The details of the supposed suicide were not clear, Deocades said.

Cathy's remains arrived here last week and Deocades said they immediately requested Antonietta Odi, medico-legal officer of the City Health Office, to conduct an autopsy on her.

Odi said the results of the autopsy would be available next week yet. But she said she had noticed some contusions in Cathy's abdomen.

Previously, it was reported that netizens had created a map of nations representing female idols growth between 2008 and 2011. An updated version of the 2011 map of nation has been released on Korean online communities showing KARA's popularity growth, or lack thereof, due to the recent controversy.

An announcement on January 19th said KARA's Seungyeon, Nicole, Hara, and Jiyoung had filed a lawsuit to terminate their contract with DSP Entertainment. Since then, Hara has withdrawn her lawsuit with suspicions that Seungyeon may follow suit.

Korean news portal sites have found this updated map that takes the lawsuit into account and says the "KARA empire has been destroyed in a day." In the older 2011 girl group era map, SNSD and 2NE1 were conquering with the most land secured followed by KARA. However, as of January 19 after the lawsuit was announced, KARA's empire disappeared and was taken over by "IU Nation". Netizens seem to have predicted that if KARA does not make up as a group or with their agency, the break up could result in what the map illustrates.

On January 23rd, the fathers of KARA’s Jiyoung and Seungyeon spoke with reporters from MBC’s “Section TV“ through a phone interview and revealed, “We have decided to negotiate with DSP Entertainment for the 24th.

Jiyoung’s father said,”Whether she returns to DSP has yet to be decided, but I hope to create good results through yielding little by little. The members have expressed that they cannot separate no matter what.

Seungyeon’s father added, “It’s not possible to be 100% satisfied in life. You just live. KARA consists of five members, it cannot be KARA with one missing. I spoke with Seungyeon and she was crying. Emotionally, she was probably very shocked.

Dream High has just revealed two pictures of Taecyeon and Eunjung performing together in one stage. The picture has viewers confused and anticipating, as Taecyeon shouldn't be able to perform because he is only in the Preparation Class. Viewers are also wondering why Taecyeon was performing with Eunjung instead of Suzy.

However, no matter what the reasons, Taecyeon and Eunjung were reported to have an extremely charismatic stage. Taecyeon's dance and rap mixed so well with Eunjung's dance and singing that the performance is thought to be one of the highlights in the entire drama.

The episode will broadcast on the 24th, 9:55 PM PST. Are you looking forward to see them perform?

Aside from gaining a nod from Perez Hilton, Big Bang’s maknae Seungri has found himself in the foreign spotlight – specifically, in the form of a two-minute feature report on the Brazilian news program “Leitura Dinâmica.”

After a summary of the widespread popularity of Western artists like Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake, Seungri was introduced through his latest music videos and hailed as a promising up & coming artist, similar to the Justin’s in terms of mainstream popularity and style.

“Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake are important names of the actual pop music and serve as reference for many people. Even for a South Korean singer. “Somebody To Love” is still on the radio, in Justin Bieber’s voices. The forgotten “Sexy Back” from another Justin was the start of everything. The two singers already got the top place in the music rankings, but they will stay back after this, because Seungri is the man.

Member of the boyband Big Bang, the South Korean singer made a new MV. He has the same music style of Justin Bieber, Usher and Timberlake. We found some similarities with Usher, Timberlake and Bieber. Seungri doesn’t talk about his references. “VVIP” is already in the online music charts, it’s a hit on the Korean radios and prepares his way in America. Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake should be careful!”

Yunho (24) and Changmin (22) are restarting DBSK’s activities by performing on TV Asahi’s “Music Station” on the 28th.

The reborn DBSK restarted their activities in January and this will be the first time the 2 of them will be performing on a Japanese music program since then. It has been a year and a month since they have performed on “Music Station”. It has been a year since they’ve released a new song, so they will be having their first live performance of their new song “Why? (Keep Your Head Down)” which will be released on the 26th.

The 2 members sent a message to the fans who have been waiting a long time to hear their singing and cool performances, “Our Japanese fans, you have been waiting for us for a long time. DBSK will have their comeback on Music Station. Please look forward to our new music”.

Furthermore, this program is a must-see for K-POP fans due to these 2 groups “appearing together”. During the same broadcast, DBSK’s juniors from the same company, SNSD, will also be performing. It will be their first time performing the Japanese version of their digital single “Run Devil Run”, which ranked #1 on ChakuUta®’s ranking for the 18th. It is likely that you’ll see a precious talk between DBSK x SNSD.

These 2 groups will also be performing at Tokyo’s National Yoyogi Stadium on January 25th and 26th for the “SMTOWN LIVE in TOKYO” music festival.

Secret Garden to live on?

…and on… and on…. SBS’s latest hit Secret Garden might just get an afterlife, although it remains to be seen whether it will be one filled with rose petals and hocus pocus, or a life of being stuck in development netherworld. The production company is currently in talks to debate a couple of options. Among them are: a drama Season 2, a musical, and a movie.

Kim Tae Woo had IU’s ‘uncle fans’ gnashing their teeth with incredulity, after he revealed that he would turn her down if she ever confessed her love for him.

On the January 22nd episode of “100 Points Out of 100“, Kim Tae Woo was asked for his thoughts about IU choosing him as her ideal type. He commented, “I was happy, but there’s a 12-year age difference.”

Park Kyung Lim said, “If IU wanted to date you, would you go for it?” Kim Tae Woo answered, “Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps, but I could not accept that.

He was then asked to choose between Rainbow’s Jaekyung, IU, and Baby VOX’s Kan Mi Yeon. The singer lived up to his smooth reputation by expressing, “IU might get offended because she’s still a teenager, so I’ll choose her.

The wealthiest person in Korea’s entertainment industry was found to be Kim Jung-ju, CEO of NXC, a holding company for Nexon, Korea’s No. 1 game company.

Forbes Korea analyzed major shareholders in Korea’s gaming, Internet, film distribution and talent industries, and released a list of the richest by assets. The magazine included holdings by spouses and children.

Kim owned 47.5 percent of NXC’s shares, making him worth 1.88 trillion won ($1.67 billion), and Yu Jeong-hyeon, his wife and NXC director, held shares worth 818.50 billion won. Together, they are worth 2.7 trillion won, the magazine said. Kim Taek-jin, CEO of NCsoft, was a distant second with assets totalling 1.97 trillion won.

Kim Young-chan and Kim Won-il, the-father-and-son co-CEOs of Golfzon, came in third with joint assets of 710 billion won. Established in 2005, Golfzon makes simulators for screen golf establishments.

Those who helped build Korea’s leading online portals also fared well.

Lee Hae-jin, chief strategic officer and founder of NHN, Korea’s top Web portal, came in fourth; Lee Jun-ho, chief operating officer of the company behind NHN’s search engine, ranked fifth; and Lee Jae-woong - founder of Daum, the country’s No. 2 portal - came in sixth.

Big names in show business were among the 30 richest: Lee Soo-man, founder and CEO of SM Entertainment, Korea’s leading talent agency, came in 11th; Yang Hyun-suk, CEO of YG Entertainment placed 21st; and Bae Yong-jun, actor and CEO of Keyeast, ranked 30th.

Heads of karaoke machine makers were among the wealthiest in entertainment. Yun Jae-hwan, president of TJ Media, and Kim Seung-yeong, chairman of Kumyoung, placed 16th and 18th, respectively.

The richest woman in the entertainment industry was Kim Yang-sin, the chairman of board of directors at JC Entertainment. She came in 12th. The only individual to make the cut from the art world was Lee Ho-jae, co-CEO of Seoul Auction, who placed 26th.

Members of the YG family have long been regarded as fashion-forward, but a recent article on Engadget, a popular consumer electronics tech blog, reveals that Big Bang and 2NE1 have some pretty tech-savvy music videos as well.

Apparently, Seungri’s What Can I Do music video reveals a brief glimpse of the LG G-Slate, an LG tablet that was only recently revealed at CES Expo and is set to be released through T-Mobile in the future.

The G-Slate has been one of the more mysterious devices launched at CES this year, but it now appears to have shaken off some of its shyness and made a cameo appearance on K-Pop star Seungri’s latest music vid,” the article reports. Taking note of Big Bang & 2NE1’s 2009 releases Lollipop, which featured LG’s candy phone, and YGE’s established relationship with LG Electronics, the post continued, “It’s not unreasonable to believe this young chap has an inside line on LG’s upcoming hardware.

While some readers were bemused at their first taste of kpop, others expressed their pleasant surprise at seeing the unlikely topic emerging on a consumer electronics blog. “Two of my favorite things: Big Bang and gadgets!” one exclaimed.

When you need us, we’re family, but when we need you, we’re strangers.”

JYJ’s latest album,”Their Rooms, Our Story,” was finally released today, and as many predicted, lyrics from a particular song has been causing some buzz in the media due to its negative portrayal of SM Entertainment.

Titled ‘Untitled Song Part 1,’ the song was self-written and composed by member Yoochun. According to Korean media outlet, Kuki News, the lyrics state:

After finally being met with jackpot success overseas and finding out that we had created unimaginable results, I headed to the company on the day of our pay with light steps. But on the statement of accounts that I received that day, the results were a minus. I thought maybe I read wrong and checked again, but everything was written as an expense. Damn, all that money was written off as expense. Exactly what kind of expense was it that all that money disappeared? I still can’t forget the higher representative’s words that told me that it would be difficult if I left the company. What the seniors said were right: Would you want to keep the ones that still willingly want to make money for you?

It continues, “This is never our efforts as a product. The day I die as a human being. It’s an effort made because I don’t want to be left with regrets.

The album is currently ranking in on the ‘Top 5′ of weekly best seller charts.

There needs to be at least one technique to survive through the idol wars. The 7 membered male group, Infinite, (Kim Sunggyu 22. Jang Dongwoo 21. Nam Woohyun. Hoya. Lee Sungyeol 20. L 19. Lee Sungjong 18.) resumed promotions with their new song ‘BTD (Before The Dawn)’ and are challenged victory with their ‘scorpion dance’. The movement bends the body down and the up again like wires are attached, making it similar to a scorpion’s movements. It’s a unique, eye-opening performance that even arose suspicions about having the screen being fake. Infinite who said, “We have confidence that we can be first place between idols who do choreography in a synchronized, grouped up way like we do,” seems to have succeeded in capturing eyes of music fans with the ‘scorpion dance’.

-The scorpion dance has become a craze. It seems like the time to practice must be long.
“Besides the 5~6 hours of sleep, we practiced for the rest of the time. After debuting in June of last year, we haven’t rested for a day. Because we didn’t receive that much interest last year, we decided to give our all for the scorpion dance once we received the ‘BTD’ choreography. Because it’s a movement where we support our whole body with just our hip strength and bend down and up, we needed to make muscles, and we did a lot of exercises to increase our flexibility.”

- There were controversies of it being fake.
“After seeing the music video, we received a lot of suspicious saying ‘their bodies are attached with wires’, ‘isn’t the screen edited’. We really did it completely with our own bodies. We practiced enough to die, so how great is it that it became a controversy. It seems that a lot of people copied it similarly and created a UCC. We’re proud because it’s proof that the scorpion dance has become popular.”

-The members having similar looks to other celebrities has become a hot topic lately.
“Woohyun hears that he looks similar to Hyunbin senior often. So he wore the sparkly training suit that a master craftsman made in ‘Secret Garden’ and uploaded the picture, but the fans’ reactions were really heated. At a glance, he does look similar. Sungyeol hears that he looks similar to Yoo Ahin-sshi often. And since Sungyeol is an actor, Yoon Yoosun’s nephew, it also became a hot topic at first.”

-Infinite seems to have had many complications before debuting.
“Everyone failed auditions of an amount that cannot be counted. Hoya dropped out of school at the age of 17 and created the dream of debuting as a singer, while being active as a dancer. When we met for the first time as a team we said, ‘We all must have failed all the auditions to become Infinite. It must have been destiny to meet like this’ and we practiced really hard to become the best group.”

- Isn’t living as a group hard?
“We live in a house with 3 rooms in Mangwon-dong, Seoul. Because we’ve been living with each other for over a year, rules have been created so it’s not really uncomfortable. Every week we rotate doing laundry and cleaning with each other, and for the cooking and washing dishes, we each do it separately. Leader Sunggyu hyung is in charge of the nagging. If the laundry’s pushed off or the house is messy, Sunggyu hyung does not fail to continue his nagging. Although we live with just males, it’s cleaner than you would think.”

-What’s a goal you created when ‘BTD’ was created?
“Plans of debuting in Japan have been set up. We want to get first place in Korea before we go to Japan.”

-What’s a unique point that only Infinite has?
“Like the team name of ‘being infinite’, our goal is to become a group with infinite possibilities that can digest any style of music or dance. We think we’re becoming a group that fits well with our team name. We have the confidence to not lose against any other team, with our group dance.”

Out of the three members in JYJ, Junsu is known as the ‘quiet one’ in the group. In interviews or press conferences, Junsu always maintained an image of mystery, as he usually gave short and sparse answers.

Recently, reporters of Sports Chosun received the opportunity to spend 24 hours in what they called his ‘rare presence’. The star has been juggling a bevy of individual activities (such as rehearsing for his musical, “Tears of Heaven“), in addition to his efforts for JYJ.

In tailing Junsu for 24 hours, the reporters sought to lessen the gap between his true, friendly image and his Hallyu star image.

BoA will be participating in her first OST song in nearly four years for TVXQ Max Changmin and Lee Yeonhee's drama "Paradise Ranch". Her last OST song "Mist" was released in 2007 for the movie "M", a suspense and thriller movie.

This will be BoA's first OST drama song, as she has only sung for movie OSTs in the past. She has also released the song "We" for the movie "Taegugki" in 2004 and "Sunshine" for the movie "Love Me Not" in 2006.

Her song for "Paradise Ranch" is titled "My Only One" and is set to be released on January 27th. It seems that SM artists have been supporting each other's drama roles through OST releases, as well as cameos. Are you looking forward to her OST release?
