Plans announced for Friend, the musical

Before the drama Friend, Our Legend even gets off the ground, announcements have been made for a musical version in the works. There’s even a new word to describe the trend of movie-turned-musicals (e.g., 200 Pound Beauty, On Air): the somewhat ungainly term “moviecal.”

A representative from Friend’s production company said, “We haven’t made concrete plans yet, but it’s true we are in talks to produce the musical.” Although technically this adaptation would be based on the original film, considering that the movie was released in 2001 and the drama version is set to come out this month, they must be riding on the anticipated popularity of the Hyun Bin-led miniseries. Meanwhile 20-episode television drama has been produced in its entirety prior to its first broadcast, which will be this weekend, June 27.

Netizens are applauding to SM's quick response.

SNSD, the biggest issue of this summer, released the album cover of upcoming 2nd mini-album on the 22nd, but people criticized the image of aircraft, which resembled Zero-sen. As the criticism grew, SNSD's management company decided to immediately delete the controversial image. On the 23rd, SM Ent said, "We inserted military icons in the album cover, but we are going to delete those because some are misinterpreted completely from what we have intended", and added "We will delete the image and replace it with T-20 which is developed and produced in Korea".

In response to the step taken by the management company for unintended but controversial issue, most of Netizens viewed it as a "regrettable but a proper decision".

Korean men in their 20s and 30s are becoming more feminine, not only by paying more attention to grooming but by wearing girdles, waxing their arms and legs, and crimping or straightening their hair.

Lotte Department Store sales records show that the proportion of men in their 20s among customers of hair curlers or irons rose from 10 percent last year to 35 percent this year. In Hyundai Department Store, the number of male customers in their 20s who bought waxing items for legs and arms increased by 34 percent since last year. And each branch of the department sells a monthly average of 50 girdles for men since their launch in October last year. Even the number of 20-something men who bought lip gloss went up 16 percent from a year ago.

In fashion, scarves now also seem to appeal to men. "A lot of male customers buy scarves because they are versatile -- you can put them around your neck like a cravat and wear them with a shirt, or you can tie it like a necktie," a Lotte spokesman said. Colorful skinny jeans, made popular among women by a girl group Girls' Generation, are also popular among men.The imported stock for men completely sold out just four months after they were launched.

Sung Yuri, Lee Jin

Former ’90s pop group FinKL kick-started a couple acting careers, namely with Sung Yuri and Lee Jin, who are set to star in competing dramas this summer. (Fellow FinKL member Ok Joo-hyun has had a successful career as a musical actress, while Lee Hyori — well, no explanation needed for her.)

Sung Yuri’s drama Swallow the Sun airs first, premiering on July 8 and taking up residence in SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday broadcast slot. Lee Jin will join in the ratings battle a month later with her horror series Hon [혼], which means Spirit or Soul; it also stars Lee Seo-jin.

In Swallow the Sun, Sung Yuri plays a young woman whose family meets with ruin and decides to head off alone to the States to study and make money (which probably explains how she ends up in Vegas). She’ll form a love triangle with a rich chaebol’s son (Lee Wan) and orphan Ji Sung. (And we’ve got at least five clichés right off the bat! Poor girl studies abroad and works to support family, has a chaebol suitor and forms a love triangle contrasting rich and poor.)

Meanwhile, this is Lee Jin’s second summer horror series in as many years; she appeared in last year’s summer horror anthology series Hometown of Legends. In Hon, she plays the prosecutor girlfriend of Lee Seo-jin’s criminal psychologist character. The story that begins when the soul of a murdered high school student enters the body of the main character.

Jang Nara, Park Kyung Lim and Lee Soo Young forms 2NE1

It was reported today that actress Jang Nara has roped in her best friends, host Park Kyung Lim and singer Lee Soo Young and are set to do a parody of YG's girl group, 2NE1.

The recording which will be done this afternoon for a KBS program will see the 3 best friends form a pirated version of 2NE1. From their costumes to the makeup, they are going all out to make sure it becomes an eye-opener. Jang Nara will parody Park Bom while Park Kyung Lim and Lee Soo Young will turn themselves into Dara and CL respectively. Unfortunately for us, Minji is the odd one out here since there are only 3 of them.

The managers of the trio expressed that they had been preparing for this since the beginning of June and have been learning the dance cheoreography of Fire from professional dancers weekly. They even rented a recording studio to do their own remix version of the song. Jang Nara's manager said that the trio have put in loads of effort for this special performance and hopes that everyone would like it.

Jang Nara is also not doing this for herself but for her 2 friends who are making their comeback soon, and thus showing their deep friendship.

When your song starts getting parodied on television, it means that on a certain level, your song is becoming known to many people and also getting popular.

Starting this week, a liberal dose of noir and court action adds diversity to a drama line-up dominated by royal feuds and romantic comedies.

On Saturday, the drama remake of the classic dude flick, "Friend" (2001), rehashes the tragic and violent tale of four blood brothers on MBC; while the legal series "Partner" kicks off with a high stakes murder trial on KBS 2 TV tonight.

Filling in the weekend slot with a testosterone-driven series may be a tactical error on MBC's part. The series' predecessor "Strike Love," a sports drama, performed poorly, while SBS' Saturday and Sunday night series "Brilliant Legacy," a romantic comedy-melodrama, has been bringing in stellar ratings, a sign that viewers are buying into lovey-dovey chick flick-style narratives.

KBS' new Wednesday and Thursday night legal series, "Partner," however, shows promise. Taking a potentially overworked formula and spicing it up with a dash of romance, crime and comedy, "Partner" avoids being pigeonholed into either a lighthearted "Ally McBeal"- or a more serious "The Practice"-prototype.

Bae to meet with 100,000 Japanese fans

Bae Yong-joon, known as "Yonsama" by his Japanese fans, will meet with an estimated 100,000 this September according to the 37-year-old Hallyu star's management company, Boundaries of Forest (BOF).

Bae is scheduled to hold a pair of events at the 40,000-plus capacity Tokyo Dome on Sept. 29 to promote the animated version of "Autumn Sonata" -- the 2002 KBS drama that catapulted him into continental super-stardom along with a book signing the following day for "The Beauty of Korea," which he penned over the course of a year.

BOF said yesterday "The Tokyo Dome can hold over 40,000 so over a two-day span we're looking at a maximum fan turn-out of around 90,000. If we take the estimated 10,000 that will hopefully attend live satellite broadcasts around movie multiplexes throughout Japan, we're estimating a ballpark figure of 100,000 total."

The upcoming events will be the actor's first "fan-meeting" in Japan since last June, when he was there to promote his MBC fantasy serial "The Legend."

On the 24th June, the boys released their debut single ‘My Heaven’ and in the morning they also appeared on Mezamashi TV programme. On the programme, Big Bang was introduced as ‘Korea’s Best Artiste’ and they also talked about the group’s debut single just released.

On the show, they also revealed Big Bang’s dormitory in Japan. TaeYang, “This is the first time we are revealing our dormitory on TV.” feeling a little embarrassed. In the apartment, many CD, comics, figurines etc can be seen.

DaeSung and TaeYang had also started reading Japanese comics like ‘One Piece’ and ‘20th Century Youth’ to help them learn Japanese. While for SeungRi he showed the Japanese CD collection that he has, “I listen to Japanese music and also follow the dance, that way I learn too.”

Big Bang to advance into Japanese market as artistes not as idols

Big Bang will be releasing their Japanese debut single on 24th June titled ‘My Heaven’. They will be working with Universal Music Japan for their Japanese debut this time.

YG Entertainment said in an interview on the 22nd, “Big Bang had went to Japan for Japanese promotions last weekend, and had came back to Korea today. In Tokyo, you can hear ‘My Heaven’ everywhere.”

“Big Bang will not be aiming to be one of the idols working with Universal Japan but as artistes. GDragon together with the other Big Bang members will bring with them their song-writing capabilities and promote as artistes.”

The YG representative also said, “At the entrance of Universal Japan office, you can see 2 photos, one is Black Eyed Peas and the other one is Big Bang’s.”

The boys will be appearing for the morning programme ‘Mezamashitere TV’ on the day of their debut single release, and they will also be appearing on SMAP member Cho NanGang’s Fuji TV ‘Waratte Iitomo’ on 26th June.

The boys will then move on to release their 2nd single in Japan title ‘Gara Gara GO’.

Following up on this post, the final results for Korea's Best Idol Group Leader have come out. And who exactly have the netizens chosen? Drumroll, please...

It's Super Junior's Leeteuk!


According to netizens, it's the 13-member group Super Junior leader Leeteuk. He has been selected to have the best looking leadership for an idol group in the community portals. On those sites, from the 16th to the 23rd, they had to answer the question "Which leader do you think has the best leadership?" When the survey was done, the results were announced on the morning of the 24th.

According to the survey, the oldest member and leader of Super Junior, Leeteuk, got 15,724 votes (34.2%) out of the 45,928 people voting, which gave him the first place. Netizens said that "the 13 members have been led wisely" and that's why they gave Leeteuk a high score.

SS501 Asian tour 2nd window ticket sales open

The boys will be holding their 1st concert performance in Seoul for their 1st Asian concert tour ‘THE 1st ASIA TOUR PERSONA IN SEOUL’. And then 2nd window sales will start at 7pm on 24th June.

The 1st window sales was held on 11th June and the tickets were sold out in 30 minutes, and the overwhelming response to the sales had also caused the server for the online sales to be down.

A representative said, “The fans who did not managed to get their tickets in the 1st window sales have been looking forward to get theirs during the 2nd window sales. How many disaster movies does Korea have? None, up until now, and that is the key point “Haeundae” producers wanted to stress — rightly so.

“We are now in the final stage of post-production, taking care of minor details including water effects,” said Yoon Je-kyoon at a news conference held in Seoul. “We sought help from American specialists because we couldn’t find any expert in water effects.”

“Haeundae,” set in the famous beach in the port city of Busan, is billed as the country’s first major disaster film. The central protagonist, aside from actors, is a mega tsunami that hits the summer resort area.

So Nyeo Shi Dae 2nd minialbum cover controversy gets blown out of proportions

With regards to this post, I think it's not longer just the airplane that was scandalous.



As reported earlier, there has been issue with So Nyeo Shi Dae’s upcoming 2nd minialbum cover being controversial after netizens spotted out an image an airplane on the cover which seems too similar to that of the Japanese Type Zero fighter aircraft.

But the issue does not just stop there, now netizens are linking the incident to Nazi associations as well.

Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo, appearing together in Japan for a Winter Sonata-related event? Will the Tokyo Dome be able to contain the excitement?

Choi’s management announced on June 23 that the pair would appear at a special event in Japan on September 29 in advance of the Japanese broadcast of the animated Winter Sonata. Both actors lent their voices to dub the project, reprising their characters Joon-sang and Yu-jin from the 2002 original.

The event will take place at Tokyo Dome, and also be broadcast live via satellite into theaters nationwide to an overall audience of about 50,000.

Choi Ji-woo explained of the animated project, “The plot is basically similar to the original drama, but it has its own unique flavor and a fairy-tale-like feel.” The animated series will broadcast in both Korea and Japan this fall.

Bae Yong-joon will be pulling double-duty; the very next day, at the same venue, he will hold an event celebrating the publication of his book, Korea’s Beauty (working title).
