- Haseul went to America to live with her aunt when she was 15/16 (circa 2013);
- She barely knew any English, and says she didn't speak for a month;
- She would go to the mall on weekends where no one knew her to practise speaking English by ordering food, buying clothes etc;
- She joined school one grade lower than her age due to the language barrier, did pretty badly while at school, and couldn't make any friends (but seems to blame the language barrier more than her classmates for this);
- Talks about many of the culture shocks she experienced at school and the differences between American and Korean schools.

November is one of the most important times of the year in Korea due to the “suneung,” or College Scholastic Ability Test. The notoriously high-pressure exam is administered to high school students here every third Thursday in November.

Controversy has arisen over the University of Seoul's plan to nearly double the tuition fees paid by foreign students starting next year.

Some students and members of the general public say the sudden hike is unfair and taking advantage of a minority group at the school. However, others say the school's tuition fees are kept artificially low through subsidies from taxpayers and it is improper to provide such a benefit to foreign students who do not pay taxes.

The university held a tuition review committee meeting June 11 and decided to raise the fees for international undergraduate and graduate students entering next year by 100 percent and 20 percent, respectively.

The University of Seoul, an affiliate of Seoul Metropolitan Government, introduced "half-price tuition" in 2012 under former Mayor Park Won-soon to relieve the financial burden on students and parents amid rows over high tuition costs at colleges here.

Since then the tuition for students in the humanities and social science department has remained at 1.02 million won ($906) per semester, regardless of a student's nationality, which is less than half of most of other universities in the country.

Classmate A that accused ITZY's Lia (21) of school bullying has been ruled innocent.

On the 13th, the Incheon Yeon-su Police Station announced that they have decided not to charge Lia's classmate A for defamation over post about Lia's alleged bullying.

In February, A posted an article in an online community titled 'I'm a victim of school violence by a popular female idol born in 2000.' A then claimed that Lia borrowed money and never paid it back and bullied her friend for no reason. A stated that she confronted Lia on why she kept harassing her friend and revealed that she was traumatized by Lia's constant swearing and abuse.

Afterwards, JYP revealed in a statement, "We will proceed with a lawsuit against this matter. We plan to take strong legal action against acts that damage our artist's reputation and interfere with activities by spreading malicious comments and false facts."

But after receiving JYP's complaint, police have determined it difficult to apply defamation charge against Lia's classmate A. Police stated, "It's difficult to see how A's post was written to slander Lia. She's only expressing what she had experienced."

Universities here are suffering from falling enrollments as the number of people at the age to enter higher education has been declining in line with the nose-diving birthrate in the country.

While the decrease in new enrollments started at colleges in remote areas about a decade ago, now schools in Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area ― relatively prestigious ones with higher competition for admissions ― are facing the same dilemma.

According to the Korea Council for University Education, Tuesday, 162 universities nationwide failed to meet their student enrollment quotas for the upcoming 2021 school year that will start in March. Usually a student applies for multiple schools, and if more than one accept the student, the student must choose between them, leaving the other schools needing to fill the vacancy.

Hence, the 162 schools are trying to select 26,129 students additionally to fill the vacancies, among those who initially failed to get admissions. This additional recruitment is nearly three times higher than the previous year's 9,830.

⚠️TW For Bullying Including Physical Violence⚠️
The Allegations )

On February 21, Cube Entertainment released an official statement regarding the matter:

“First, upon checking with Soojin herself about the post about (G)I-DLE’s Soojin that is being spread online, it was found that the creator of the comment is the older sister of Soojin’s classmate from middle school. It is true that the poster heard Soojin and her classmate arguing over the phone and had an argument with Soojin after taking over the call. However, we have confirmed that the poster’s claims about school violence and such were not true at all.

Also an actress who also attended school with Soojin, Seo Shin Ae, posted a cryptic message on her Instagram stories shortly after the news came out. It simply reads “None of your excuse”. Shin Ae has been vocal in the past about bullying affecting her childhood and has been active in promoting anti-bullying messaging.

The decision by Busan police to charge over 100 million won ($95,000) to parents wanting to access CCTV footage from a daycare center ― due to suspicions of child abuse ― has raised questions as to whether the financially burdensome demand was appropriate.

The parents, who have been sending their child to a state-run daycare center, recently reported to Busan Gijang Police Station their concerns that the child might have been abused at the facility and requested access to two weeks of video recordings from a surveillance camera set up there.

However, officers at the station informed the parents, Jan. 20, that they would have to pay the extravagant fee.

The money, the police explained to the parents, was to cover the cost of editing the video to censor everyone other than the parents' child to protect their privacy in accordance with the country's Privacy Act. The video could only be released in its original state if both the parents and all the people in the video agreed to allow the parents access to the uncensored version.

Here's a run-down on what happened with Hong Jin Young in the last two months:

- Hong Jin Young is famous for having a Ph.D. Especially at the beginning of her career her degree was often referenced in interviews and variety shows, helping her to get noticed. (She has a Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Trade, and Ph.D in Business Administration from Chosun University.)

- In 2013, the first rumor of plagiarism appeared and she denied them on Radio Star saying, “You all know the world we’re living in. Why would I lie about that?”

In this series I want to go through groups that are gone, but not forgotten. I will go from debut till disbandment or [indefinite] hiatus, remembering the time we had together and look back on their highs and lows.

This installment is a Core Contents Media Special about Gangkiz, The SeeYa, Coed School and F-ve Dolls
The label was established on January 9, 2007 as the subsidiary label of CJ E&M Music by Kim Kwang-Soo. On October 1, 2014, it was announced that Core Contents Media had been acquired by MBK Co., and renamed as MBK Entertainment. MBK is an abbreviation for "Music Beyond Korea".

Next: Hint

I planned this flopped CCM groups special many weeks ago, but it took me very long to dig up all the information on these groups and to complete it. The old CCM days were so wild.
I hope you can make some time to look into these groups because the songs are all really decent. CCM worked really hard to create a second T-ara though. My favorites from this post are Gangkiz' MAMA (the whistle is so addicting!), F-ve dolls' It's You, Like This or That and Soulmate #1.

I have been listening to Soulmate #1 so much the past weeks, it's such a catchy song. The lyrics is so funny though: Hug me tight till my rib bones break, kiss me so my teeth fall out 🤭

Let me know what you think about this week? Did you enjoy any of these groups? Do you remember them? What do you think about the scandals/rumours?

The average one-year tuition for English-only kindergartens here is 11.59 million won ($9,660), nearly double the average tuition of domestic universities (6.71 million won) and even higher than that of medical schools (9.63 million won). Nevertheless their number has increased by 41 percent over the past two years on the back of unwavering demand for early English education for children among deep-pocketed families.

While many of the kindergartens are in Seoul's affluent Gangnam area, those in Incheon, Jeju Island and Busan also flourish.
