We don’t have time to have fun because of our schedule. However, I get fired up the most when I’m with the members.
The know-how acquired after a year of broadcast activities
I didn’t know what I was supposed to do when we made our debut. After almost a year we have had an opening stage at a big concert, it also feels like we are able to communicate in Japan too, so because of that I can enjoy being up on stage a lot more. When I do monitoring, I can see that my expression got a lot more natural. The members also flirt in front of the camera nowadays.

When I was in America I used to have birthday parties at home. Almost everyone does it like that there. I would invite friends and have tasty meals with them, or swim in the swimming pool. I miss those kinds of memories.

When all the members reach legal age, I want to rent a club and have a big birthday party. I need to wait for 3 or 4 more years, but…

A person who digests everything well. I’m not all that cute, but I had to sing a song called “A” in a very cute manner. Rather than having done it well, I just buried myself into it. This time we have to do “Stop Stop It” in a slightly sexy way, so I think I’ll be able to digest it well again.
Over the last year the things that have been hard as a leader…
At first it was burdensome because I thought that a leader has to be responsible. It felt like everyone’s responsibilities were mine as well. I don’t really know, but I decided to come to terms with it because I think there’s a reason why the company picked me as a leader.

Decisiveness. When I collect members’ demands and talk about it with the company, I find that decisiveness and eloquence are important. Rather than talking endlessly, you have to know how to efficiently convey it to the company.

The dorm life
I have a bit of an arrangement barrier, so I ask them to keep the joint space like the living room clean. I don’t touch their own rooms because I think it’s their personal freedom. The gas stove broke recently, and the apartment’s owner left for a trip abroad, so we were just using a portable one. But now we can’t use that too because we ran out of gas. Someone has to go and buy one, but even I find it bothersome.
My room
There are a lot of clothes, but it’s rather clean because every two months I rummage the closet and re-arrange everything.
The thing I’m hooked on lately is…
Music. I have to make my own songs, so I’m working even harder on it. Also fashion. I don’t want to hear things like I can’t wear clothes.
Shopping style
I plan in advance. I take a screen shot of the things I want and then buy them in that order because if I buy everything in a go, my parents nag me for it. I buy one, then earn money again and buy the next thing. The problem is when I rearrange clothes, I can’t throw away anything because everything looks new. After all, I wear a lot of stage costumes.

Gothic style like of Rick Owens. I bought the earrings I wear now too. At first I had only one piercing, now they just keep on growing.

My friends once came to our house unannounced and threw me a birthday party with my parents. I was really flustered, but also had a great fun.

I grew around 3 cm. I think I hit puberty. My voice also broke, so it’s somewhat changed since our debut. Lately, when I try to sing our debut songs, the notes are too high, I can’t reach them. Also, body hair grew too (laughs).
To me fashion is…
Everything. I especially like Saint Laurent. I think that all the money I make goes there. It’s the truth that the fans know too. Saint Laurent is really really expensive, so I asked the fans not to give me that kind of presents. I’m so thankful for the ice-cream and cookies alone. Once a representative of the Korean Saint Laurent branch came to our showcase. Saying that they saw me wear Saint Laurent often, he left after giving me his card. I liked that. I don’t know when, but I’d really like to go to a fashion week someday.

I always watch fashion week videos. I also tend to visit Saint Laurent’s homepage quite often. This season there was a strong leather influence, but the 2012 or 2013 style is better than that. We expected to see around 3000 fans during our fan meeting in Thailand, but 8000 people came. We held it in a movie theatre, but all people couldn’t go in. The people who comment on my Instagram are mostly Thai too. I think it’s like a support between the people of the same country.

I’m looking after it like crazy. I’m always wearing padding and a scarf. We don’t have a humidifier in our dorm, so I sleep with the laundry hanging. I have to buy the humidifier, but there’s no time.

At first it was really hard to look at the camera. It was embarrassing and awkward. Lately, I want to show something, so I do the monitoring really thoroughly with my iPad. I keep on watching and watching before I go up the stage. My character’s just like that.

The others say I’m meticulous. If I’m doing something, I want to do it properly, so I try until I like the result. When I do a song, I also don’t care about my voice condition and just go until the end. You are happy if your effort equals your objective. You just can’t give up.
In your free time…
I record piano chords and then keep on thinking about the melody. I haven’t studied composing separately, but I keep on making songs. Writing lyrics is really difficult, so I’m thinking of reading many books. I’m especially trying to bear in mind the deep meaning of the words when I read poetry.

Onda Riku’s “Nighttime picnic”. I like the 4-dimensional feeling that is hard to grasp.

Reaction to the songs you composed
It’s a ballad. The PD didn’t have time (to listen), and the members said it was good. However, it doesn’t match with GOT7’s concept, so I don’t think it’s going to pull through. Someday, I have to put it into my solo album, when I release one.

“Roommate” filming
Microphone is a bigger problem than cameras. When I didn’t turn off my microphone in the bathroom, the camera director was shocked. As long as I am careful about that kind of stuff, it’s fun.
“Roommate” member you’re the closest to
Joon hyung (Park Junhyung). It’s a hyung you can talk frankly to. If we speak in Korean and don’t understand each other, we just switch into English. But really, I’m close with Youngji, Seho hyung, Gukju nuna, and everyone.
An advice given by Park Junhyung
Rather than calling it a piece of advice, Jun hyung’s nuna said she felt like watching her own younger brother when she saw me. She said I’m like Jun hyung 20 years ago, that I just am what I am on TV, without worrying about my image management. I say what I want to say, if it’s something the general public might dislike me for, then I should definitely fix it, but I don’t think I have to hide myself from the very beginning. Or am I too honest?
A Korean word you use often
Heol (=gasp, omg). I used to use “Oh my god” quite often, but now whenever I’m amused or surprised it’s just “heol.”
In Hong Kong
Since the debut I went to Hong Kong with JYP Nation concert after a year and a half. I thought I would be recognized a lot, but even if they know GOT7 in Hong Kong, they don’t know me well. I somewhat expected something at a restaurant, but they just went “Who are you?” They will recognize me in 10 years (laughs).
What kind of son are you?
When I went to Hong Kong, I talked a lot with my parents. They are definitely worried a lot that their son lives abroad. But I’m also worried as much about my parents. Mom’s joints ache a lot as she grows older. I call her every day and tell her to eat healthy food. My father is a trainer of Hong Kong’s national fencing team. He came to Korea a while ago because of the Asian games. The taxi fare was over 100 000 won (>100 USD) to Incheon Airport, but I wanted to see him fast even if for a little while.
Ways of being a good son
When they calculate the accounts at the company and give me money, I send it immediately to my parents. My parents make their own money, but if you’re a son, you definitely have to do that. I told them to buy something good to eat when I sent them 500 000 won (~500 USD), but they don’t use it no matter what. I really don’t like it. Next time, I’ll just buy them a present.
In a dorm without an air-con…
I’m sharing a room with Mark, and that’s the only place without the air-con. So I just spent the summer in the living-room. Lately, I thought it would be cold, but all 4 seasons in Korea are warm for me.
A memorable party
It can’t be published! (laughs) Just kidding. After JYP Nation we had a company dinner, I think I ate 5 servings of samgyubsal on my own. I drank a lot with 2AM hyungs, and the next time I opened my eyes, I was in my bed.

When you look back on the past year
I wore hip hop clothes during our debut, but lately I’m seeking a clean and dandy style. If I had to pick something, perhaps Versace? I learned to enjoy colors too. I enjoy wearing pastel tone knitwear and primary color outerwear.
Fighting with members
It happens often. It’s only natural because 7 people from different countries and different environments live together. Although we don’t fight with fists, we’ve argued a lot over the most miniscule ridiculous things. Instead we grew closer. We know what makes others feel bad, so we become more honest and considerate of each other.
The pains of being a minor
When I say I’m 17 they go “You’re still a kid.” Even if I’m young, I know what I’m supposed to know (laughs). I also often hear I’m cute, but I’d like to hear I’m cool.
The part of your appearance you’re confident of
After all, it’s my nose. It’s a high nose with well-shaped rounded sides. I wish it was sharper and more pointed, but everyone says I shouldn’t do anything about it.
When you look at a woman…
It’s a bit odd to say “a long time ago” when I’m this young, but an innocent woman used to be my ideal type. Then suddenly the ideal disappeared, and whoever I grow to like, that becomes by ideal. Recently, I find charming a person with unusual character. Someone who stands out.

Just now while waiting for the photo shoot I read Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”. I like books, so a staff member gave it to me as a gift. It’s a bit hard to understand, I like its poetic language.
Your favorite writer
I read J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” because they said it’s one of the top 100 American novels. At first I wondered why anyone would write about something so banal. When I looked for the reason why it was praised, all the things I’ve read carelessly were actually meaningful. When I read it for the second time, I wondered whether that’s the life that doesn’t lose its innocence in irrational reality.
The reason you read books
The idol occupation is good, but when you live according to a well-knitted busy schedule, little by little your thoughts disappear. When your daily life gets repetitive, I think the person gets destroyed. I was talking with someone someday, and suddenly I realized that I sounded foolish. Then I snatched onto books.
The person you talk the most to
Manager, acting teacher. I try to talk a lot with anyone. There’s no particular topic, I try to listen to the things the other person has to say. The director of “The Thieves” said that when you listen to others well, you get the subject, and it evolves into another conversation.
University life
I had a fantasy about university’s campus. I wanted to try out the CC (Campus Couple) I’ve only heard of too, but it would be hard. Instead of that, I like my course mates who don’t treat me like a celebrity, the classes are interesting too. Each professor’s word is like a jewel. It’s even more so because I can’t go to school often.
Studying
I didn’t like studying in junior high and high school years. I did it because I had to. Now I regret that. When I entered the university I realized that learning is fun. If I had known it earlier, I think my life would have been different.
Childhood memory
I played football in the rain in the 4th grade. It was so fun I didn’t hear the bell, so I got hit by the homeroom teacher a lot. I couldn’t understand why I had to be hit this much, so I got really angry. I was really rebellious back in school days.

My patience grew bigger. Back then if it was hard, I wanted to show it. Like a kindergartener. Right now I find that old me amusing. There’s not a single person in this world, who wouldn’t have a hard time.
A memorable journey
Before GOT7’s debut, the company once sent me to New York. There I took dance lessons from professionals, but I thought that perhaps I should just give up. I felt such a small fish in big pond, all the thoughts I had had until then felt wrong. That was the last trip.
Any journey plans?
If I get some time off, I want to go to Jeju and travel around the island on a scooter. Staying not at a hotel, but at guesthouses. I always wish to go somewhere.
The thing you want to have
I’m very possessive, so there are many things. Lately, I want to have all the good books. I like vintage, so instead of new books, I prefer old secondhand books. Old things are more beautiful than new things. I step on new shoes on purpose and then wear them. Later on when I buy a house, I think I’ll get an old wooden house instead of a new marble one.

Do you remember the first scene where Leonardo DiCaprio appears in “The Great Gatsby?” I think of a party with GOT7 members in a huge castle, where we think of the days past just like Leo. Of course, it’s just a dream, but…
Even if we go abroad, we don’t have time to go out and have fun. We went shopping a little bit in Japan, and we went to the Universal Studios in Singapore. That’s it. I want to create more memories in the future. We will be really busy at the end of the year; at least once I’d like to go with the members to a beach to watch the sunset. I think it would be really beautiful. After a year of working as GOT7, finally we released the 1st regular album. I’m really thankful to the members who endured all this while. It would be great if we could all enjoy the dreamlike party like in the movie “The Great Gatsby” together, but that’s really only a dream, right? — Jr.
