What Happens When North Korean Olympians Lose?

One might understand U.S. gymnast Jordyn Wieber's heartbreak when she failed to qualify for the finals or commiserate with the angry tears of South Korean fencer Shin A-lam after a faulty clock dashed her dreams. But things could be a lot worse. What happens to North Korean athletes when they fail to bring home the gold?

ABC reported on Thursday that the state offers a carrot-and-stick approach to the Olympic Games; athletes can look forward to refrigerators, cars, and televisions when they win, and labor camp when they lose.

The rumors are unconfirmed, but ABC writes that "review meetings" after competitions often result in athletes' expulsion from their sports organizations and assigned time in labor camps. North Korean Olympians going up against rival countries like the U.S. and South Korea have even more cause for concern.

Yikes! North Korean labor camp isn't a nice place. Defectors have described abysmal conditions and horrors such as torture, executions, and starvation. Human Rights Watch estimates about 200,000 people could be held in such camps, where prisoners are often forced to do "difficult physical labor such as mining, logging, and agricultural work ... with rudimentary tools in dangerous and harsh conditions."

Man Scolds 16-year-old for Spitting, Gets Beaten-up and Dies

A family man in his 30s was beaten to death in front of his 6-year-old son by teenagers while trying to discipline one of them. Outraged citizens have called for an environment to be created as soon as possible whereby spoiled teenagers are punished accordingly.

According to West Suwon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, on the 1st of August, the police booked the 16-year-old high school student Kim and 20-year-old Shin on charges of killing Mr. Kim (39).

The incident happened on the 21st of last month at 12:10 am when Mr. Kim scolded one of the teenagers by telling him ‘not to spit on the floor.’

Younger Kim (16) became outraged right after he was scolded by Mr. Kim, and started to beat him up. As the fight went on for too long, Shin (20), who was passing by, intervened and tried to alleviated the tension between two Kims. However, Shin’s attempt now led the fight to move between Mr. Kim and himself.

S Korea Hates Japan More Than North Korea, Gallup Poll Reveals

Nothing brings a nation together like a common enemy and the Olympics give us an excuse to degrade every other country on the planet world without it seeming xenophobic.

It was in the midst of this festive atmosphere that Gallup Korea published their annual poll showing the country’s opinion of the rest of the world. The results? South Korea hates Japan even more than North Korea and loves America the most.

Okay, so the Japanese and South Koreans don’t get alone—what else is new? Japan hit the top of the same list back in 2002 and it shouldn’t be too hard to find a poll in Japan where Korea scores the same.

What is different about this year’s results is how much Korea seems to hate Japan: whereas 19.1% of South Koreans polled said they hold a unfavorable view of runner-up country China, a whopping 44.1% of respondents answered the same of Japan. While K-pop tops Japanese music charts and young Japanese women dream of bagging a Korean boy, nearly half of Korea is telling Japan to shove off.

Siwon's father loses his damn mind in anti-Japan tirade

The father of Super Junior's Siwon, Kiho Choi, recently made some unsavory comments on his Twitter against Japan. The tweets in question claim that Jesus Christ was the only savior during Japan's colonization and that Korea was chosen by God himself over Japan.

He continued by saying, "Think Japan, God gave an opportunity to receive Good news & modern civilization but they got civilization only and became strong country." He also extolled Korea's virtues (no doubt bestowed by Christ himself), "In economic,science,industry,arts,sports and religion Korea becomes top in the world."

The incident comes after Choi made a controversial statement on his Twitter in May in which he criticized gay marriage and Barack Obama's stance on the issue.

SBS K-Pop Super Concert in America Has Been Postponed

Fans who were waiting for SBS’s K-Pop Super Concert in America this Friday will have to wait a little longer as a postponement of the event was announced today.

It was announced on Absolute K-pop, “We regret to inform you that the SBS K-Pop Super Concert in America, scheduled to take place at the Home Depot Center this Friday, August 10, 2012, has been postponed to a later date. More details will be announced as soon as possible.”

It was soon followed up with the messages:

“Tickets can be refunded on AXS.com or Hotdeal.KoreaDaily.com, depending on the method you used to purchase your tickets. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment we caused all of you. Please await an official letter of apology from SBS. More details regarding the postponed concert will be posted as soon as possible.”

and…

“Please hold on to your refunded tickets. We will make sure all those who have purchased tickets for the August 10, 2012 concert receive preferential ticketing options for the postponed concert.”

As the event was expected to have an amazing lineup of Girls’ Generation, MBLAQ, SHINee, Kara, 2PM, CN Blue, 2AM, SISTAR, and Secret, many K-Pop fans were saddened to hear the news of the postponement.

Idol group JYJ displayed their comical sense of humor. The members who are currently endorsing clothing brand NII struck a few comical poses for the brand’s autumn line photo shoot. The shoot took place in early July, and the concept was for the boys to mentally write an entry in the secret diary they each had when they were younger, and to express their personal stories through honest facial expressions.

SM To Take More Of Your Money With Their First "Best Album" In Twelve Years

SM Entertainment is preparing to release a compilation album of its biggest hits.

SM Entertainment will release its compilation album SM Best Album 3 on August 10.

The album will be released as commemoration for its upcoming S.M.Art Exhibition and will be SM’s first best album in 12 years since the release of SM Best Album 2 in 2001.

The 6 CD set will contain some of SM’s biggest hit tracks released from 2001 through 2012 and will include everyone from Yoo Young Jin through f(x) and EXO.

Hit OST tracks sung by SM artists such as Taeyeon’s Do You Hear Me and Yesung’s It Can’t Be Anyone Else But You and some of SM’s more diverse music such as pianist Song Kwang Sik’s piano track Dreams of Heaven and folk singer Chu Ga Yeoul’s Is There No One Like Me will also be included for a total of 89 tracks.

Girls’ Generation Wins Gold Medal in Pop Olympics

Girls’ Generation won the gold medal for the first ever Pop Olympics on the music news portal, Popdust.

The Pop Olympics had representatives from America, Canada, Great Britain, and Korea compete against each other in a series of polls to see who was the world’s favorite pop star. In the first round starting from July 23rd, where each country elected a representative, Girls’ Generation received a staggering 4,278,684 votes (49.19%), edging out Big Bang, Wonder Girls, and 2NE1 to represent Korea.

Girls’ Generation went up against Taylor Swift from America, Justin Bieber from Canada, and The Wanted from Great Britain in the final competition of the Pop Olympics.

It was a clean sweep for Girls’ Generation, as they won each of the five categories in convincing fashion: Best Music Video for “MR. TAXI” (66%, 19,598 votes), Hottest Artist (66%, 36,154 votes), Best YouTube Moment for their fun talents at the New York fan meeting (76%, 33,437 Votes), Best Fans (65%, 17,413 Votes), and Best Song for “The Boys” (60%, 157,016 Votes). Voting was held from July 30th until August 6th with a new category being added every day. The Wanted was awarded the silver medal, and Taylor Swift was awarded the bronze.
