It’s only been five days since Chocolat made their debut, but member Tia has already picked up an endorsement! She’s been selected to model for the popular teen make-up brand, ‘Lioele‘.

The brand is highly popular amongst girls in their teens and early 20’s, so the endorsement is a great opportunity to spread awareness about Chocolat to their target fanbase. Considering the fact that it hasn’t even been a week since her debut, Tia’s been earning quite a lot of attention for this feat.

Super Junior’s Yesung recently
thanked his fans after winning 1st place on Mnet’s ‘M!Countdown‘.

On August 25th, the star tweeted, “Thank you so much for M!
Countdown’s triple crown. Our Kko Ming is so happy after I took him out,
before he seemed sad and kept looking out the window at home.” He
also tweeted a photo of himself holding his dog, Kko Ming.

In the picture, Yesung smiles brightly while holding his adorable
pet. Hilariously, some netizens commented that Yesung and his puppy
looked similar, especially because of Yesung’s dark black hair.

Netizens wrote, “You two look alike”, “I think Yesung seems
happier than the dog”, “Kko Ming is so cute.”

T-ara's Roly Poly shatters IU's record and becomes the #1 grossing song of 2011 thus far

T-ara’s “Roly-Poly” has become 2011’s top grossing song of the year thus far, thanks to its record $2 million USD in sales!

The previous record was set by IU’s “Good Day“, which garnered $1.3 million USD. T-ara shattered that record with the wide appeal of their retro concept, which drew interest not just from young idol fans, but from older audiences who felt a touch of nostalgia when they heard the song.

A representative of Core Contents Media said, “T-ara’s ‘Roly-Poly’ has been at the top for 10 weeks, bringing in $2 million USD in sales.”

The song averaged $30,000 USD in digital sales per day, and came up as the top digital hit song of the year. On August 1st, ‘Roly Poly’ recorded $200,000 USD alone, setting records all across the Korean digital music market. Hit albums usually only average about $300,000 USD in digital sales, so ‘Roly-Poly’ has definitely set a record that’s hard to achieve in the market.

While preparing to bid their fans farewell this week, the girls commented, “Thank you to all of our fans for giving so much love to ‘Roly-Poly’ over the past two months. We’re glad we were able to bring up fond memories for our fans in their 40s and 60s.”

Singer Kim Dongwan shared his worries with Osen in a recent interview, “I would like to get married in 2 years’ time, but I’m worried about whether I’ll meet a nice girl.”

“After I get married at 35, my next goal is to have a child born in the Year of the Goat, when I’m 36. Lately my biggest worry is whether I’ll meet a nice girl. As I get older, I become more picky instead, and I’m also worried about whether I’m a good man that nice girls want to meet.”

Sharing his difficulties, he added, “Actually privacy is very important to me, and I prefer work to love. I’m more like a cho shik nam* (herbivore guy) who enjoys things like having meals cooked for me. When I do surveys, the results indicate that I’m a cho shik nam. Even if I’m in a relationship, I’m a “boyfriend who’s like a sister”, I have a lot to talk about and I share very minor details. I try to change but I’m born with a character that’s hard to change.”

Since young, his ideal type has always been “girls who are likable”. Kim Dongwan recently played the poet Lee Yuk Sa in the MBC Liberation Day drama special “The Vertex”, and has earned praise for his sensitive portrayal. He is also wrapping up a successful run of the musical “Hedwig” in which he plays the titular character. He will continue with acting activities in the 2nd half of the year, and will make a comeback next spring as part of Shinhwa.

          Infinite’s member, Sungjong, transformed into a ‘bunny boy’.
This has recently been drawing attention on an internet board with the title of ‘Bunny Sungjong’. It’s a picture that he took with Go Youngwook and Kim Yongpyo, while recording for E Channel’s ‘Life or Death Situation 1%’. In the picture, Sungjong is wearing a red sailor outfit and a bunny ears headband, emphasizing his cuteness. Go Youngwook, who usually shows infinite affection to Sungjong on ‘Life or Death Situation 1%’, drew attention for tightly hugging Sungjong.

        Netizens showed various reactions like, “That man, Sungjong, who is prettier than women”, “It’s really cute”, “I understand Go Youngwook’s Sungjong-sickness”.
Meanwhile, Sungjong’s group, Infinite, is in the middle of actively promoting their title song, ‘Be Mine’, off their official first album.

KARA's activities in Japan threaten BoA's 11-year stronghold?

August 1st, the record was shown that Kara had sold about 320 thousand album copies. This can be further evidence to the fact that they can be a danger to BoA's 11 year music career in Japan.

In August of 2010, KARA debuted officially in Japan and later released the songs "Mister," "Jumping," and "Jet Coaster Love." The huge popularity that came with their songs surprised many people.

In the past, BoA was seen as the music queen in Japan. BoA had been promoting for 11 years and sold about 10 million albums.

One official stated, "In Japanese music sales, KARA has been gaining popularity that drives through the roof and it can be seen that KARA is a huge pop icon for the younger generation."

The fact that Kara had huge sales for their single "Go Go Summer" is another thing that draws interest from people. The single ranked number 1 on the Japanese music site Rekochoku. The rankings shown in this site and others also gave further evidence that the girl group has the potential to overtake BoA.

Asides from KARA, other groups like SNSD and TVXQ are doing just as well in Japan.

Super Junior is so populair that some group decided to plagiarize Bonamana

It has been reported that SM Entertainment has claimed that Moroccan singer Tiraline has plagiarized Super Junior's "Bonamana." On August 26th, an official at SM Entertainment told Star News, "We had our music staff listen to the song. The Moroccan singer's song 'Matal Maghribi' is obviously a plagiarism. We will establish contact with the publishing company and will take appropriate action."

One of Tiraline's members revealed the song through SNS on February 7th.

Super Junior is currently promoting their song "Mr. Simple."

What school lunches in Korea tell us about the future of the welfare state

There is an unusual political battle going on in South Korea right now, over, believe it or not, school lunches. The Seoul city council voted to implement a large-scale program to feed every primary and middle school student in the capital – all 850,000 of them – a free lunch every day, at a cost to the government of nearly $380 million a year. However, Seoul's mayor, Oh Se Hoon, opposed the program and countered with a more modest proposal to expand the current school lunch program to include more needy students, at a cost of $280 million annually. This issue of school lunches was extremely controversial in Korea and sparked a national debate. The dispute, at its heart, was over how the Korean government should spend its money, and how extensive state welfare policies ought to become. Should Korea have a big government, or a small one? Should Korea adopt the sort of taxpayer-funded welfare systems so prevalent in the West? The conservative Oh thought the answer was no. The council's feed-everyone-for-free idea, he believed, ran counter to the spirit of the national economy. Here's what he said, according to The Wall Street Journal:

Giving free meals to all students can't be consistent with the Seoul city government's welfare policy, which aims at citizens' independence and self-reliance.
