Adults say that motorcycles are dangerous and tell us not to ride on them, but don’t the children ride on them anyway? They even pursue for speed. Youthfulness seems to be like that too. Billboard launches Kpop Hot 100 Chart

Billboard goes K-Pop today (Aug. 25) with the launch of a new chart, the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100. The tally, which ranks Korea's top-selling songs, kicks off with girl group Sistar's "So Cool" grabbing the No. 1 slot and  beating out second-place Leessang and 2NE1, who land not only at No. 3 (with "Ugly") but also No. 14 ("Hate You") and No. 21 ("I Am The Best") on the chart dated Sept. 3.



The Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart, launched in conjunction with Billboard Korea, is based on digital sales via leading websites as well as downloads from mobile service sites using an industry-standard formula and the most credible music data sources within Korea. The K-Pop Hot 100 debuts simultaneously here on Billboard.com, in the international chart section of Billboard.biz, in Billboard magazine, and also on Billboard Korea's website, billboard.co.kr.


"The launch of the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart is a milestone event, as it will provide the Korean music market with what we believe is Korea's most accurate and relevant song ranking," says Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard's Director of Charts. "We're excited to be expanding Billboard's globally recognized Hot 100 chart franchise into this country, and look forward to enhancing the K-Pop Hot 100 chart in the near future with additional data as well as creating new charts that showcase the breadth of Korean music."


Meanwhile the artists dominating the top of the inaugural Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 reflect the fact that hit-making girl groups are a top attraction in Korean music. Sistar and 2NE1 are just two examples. T-ara, made up of seven young ladies, has secured the No. 4 position as well as grabbing No. 73 (visit Billboard.biz soon for positions No. 51-100). Miss A, whose influential management company also manages the ever popular Wonder Girls, rounds out the top five with their single "Good-bye Baby."

People assume that the head honchos of the Korean music industry are the agencies CEOs and executives, but they’d be nowhere without the catchy songs to back their artists. The biggest figures of the industry, the composers, are now moving up from simply composing tracks to becoming producers and even expanding to launch their own companies.

With JYP Entertainment’s J.Y. Park at the lead, following closely are Brave Brothers, Shinsadong Tiger, and other popular composers kick-starting their own entertainment agencies.

When a rookie group/artist debuts, the first question that is asked has shifted from, “Which management company are they under?” to “Which composer produced their song?”

This is said to be a direct reflection of the changes the industry is currently undergoing. With a slew of songs being released every moment, it’s only the songs that are of top quality that will manage to survive.

Producer Choi Kap Won, who recently launched NAP Entertainment, commented, “The consumption of music as well as the distribution of it has become significantly faster than in the past. Before, composers would merely provide the song for the management to produce and start up, but that’s all changed now. Composers are the ones that know more about the artists they write for since they want to make songs that fit them the best. Their role in the industry is definitely expanding.”

So who should you know and keep an eye on? OSEN compiled an easy-to-remember list, excluding the ‘top two legends’ of the industry whom everyone should know: Kim Hyung Suk (Kiwi Music) and Yoon Il Sang (Nega Network). Check it out below!

To encourage ‘Our Star Defense Corps Summer Camp’ held by the Ministry of Culture and Korea’s Copyright Commision Council, Infinite and T-ARA met with the minister of Culture, Jung Byunggook, on the afternoon of the 25th at Kyunggyi, Gapyung at the Good Morning Training Center. The summer camp, that is held for 2 days and 1 night, is made up of the singers and fanclub members and they will be learning about copyrights for voluntary protection of copyright along with having a fanmeeting.

The Korean Government in Smartphones? They’re Not That Stupid

Is the South Korean government trying to create something – like a smartphone operating system – to compete with Google and Apple and anyone else who threatens Samsung and LG and other technology companies here?

No, not really.

But media reports that it is have escalated since a deputy minister at South Korea’s commerce ministry at a lunch meeting with Korean reporters on Monday suggested that a program designed to provide financial support to small- and mid-sized software companies could be expanded to help South Korea’s giants fend off Google and whoever else in the future.

The official’s comments came in response to questions about the prospect that Google, which provides the software Samsung and LG have chiefly relied on to build a smartphone business, might shortchange them after it buys Motorola Mobility.

That prospect is slim but it is generating lots of panicky stories in the Korean media. One newspaper earlier this week printed a graphic on its front page of Samsung Electronics under siege from many competitors, neglecting to mention that the firm is on target for its second-biggest profit ever (after last year’s record-setting $16 billion profit beat the bottom line of nearly everyone else in high-tech, including Apple).

Angelic queens invite 30 children from low income families to their concert

2NE1 impressed netizens with their compassion after it was revealed that the girls reserved free seats for 30 children from low-income, multi-cultural families for their first concert, ‘NOLZA‘.

The 30 children are from the ‘Holt Welfare program’, an organization that received $100,000 USD in donations from YG Entertainment to support 100 children earlier this year. The agency is known for their charity work, as they previously donated 10 cents per album sold (1% of their digital profit), and $1 from each concert ticket sold through their ‘YG WITH‘ campaign.

One child happily commented, “I’ve always loved 2NE1 so I’m glad that I received an opportunity I never could even dream of.” The members themselves added, “I hope that we can provide strength through our concert for the children who are working hard to live life day to day.”

'NOLZA’ will open on August 26th and run through the 28th at the Olympic Hall.

Expectations are high for 2NE1’s first concert

2NE1, the girl group that set new bars by hitting number 1 with all 5 singles that they released this year, will hold their first concert since their debut. Their free-flowing performances and flashy outfits equipped with trendy music has built an expectation from music fans matched by no other with the arrival of their first concert.

With plans to debut in Japan in September, 2NE1 is busy preparing for the concert. Star News was able to take a sneak peak at their first 3-day long concert, “Nolza”.

As it is their first mega-scale concert since their debut, 2NE1 has been busy preparing through rehearsals. Although most concerts’ rehearsals usually begin 2 days before the concert date, 2NE1 has scheduled rehearsals a week before the concert date.

On August 24th, a staff member from YG Entertainment spoke with Star News and stated, “We rented out the concert venue for rehearsal so we could best match the same environment as the concert. The time invested in preparation is described by the members’ passion for the upcoming concert”.

The stage will have various colors to bring out the individualistic nature of 2NE1.

Uh-mazing SMTOWN line-up for a musical: Fany, Eunhyuk, Lina and Jungmo to play in 'Fame'

It's been revealed that Super Junior's Eunhyuk and SNSD's Tiffany will be making their musical debuts through 'Fame'.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the musical, 'Fame' was viewed by nearly 4 million people from 1995 to 2006, and with an estimated revenue of 56,000,000 pounds, it's the best-selling West End theater musical to date. The musical has gained international recognition, with over 300 productions shown in 16 different countries. This time, 'Fame' will be revamped for the Korean audience with an upgraded stage and outstanding cast line-up.

Using a performing arts school as a backdrop, the musical will incorporate acting, ballet, and violin and wind instrument performances to create a dramatic and entertaining storyline. Son Ho Young, Super Junior's Eunhyuk, SNSD's Tiffany, CSJH's Lina, and Trax's Jungmo will portray the lives and hardships endured by the top students of 'P.A Performing Arts School', who strive to be the top 1% of their class by excelling in singing, dancing, and acting.

The cast will have two actors for each character: Son Ho Young and actor Ko Eun Sung as 'Nick Piazza', Eunhyuk and actor Kim Dae Hyun as 'Tyron Jacksogn', Tiffany and actress Shin Yi Jung as 'Carmen Diaz', Lina and actress Choi Joo Ri as 'Serena Katz', and Jungmo and gypsy violinist Lee Il Geun as 'Schlomo Metzenbaum'.

The first batch of tickets for 'Fame' will go on sale on September 6th, and the musical will play at the Olympic Park Woori Finance Art Hall from November 25th to January 29th of next year.

Cassies did it well - Yoochun wins Most Popular Actor poll. Moon Geun Young gets 1st among actresses

On August 25th, the results for the online popularity poll for the category of 'Most Popular Actor' and 'Most Popular Actress' were revealed ahead of the upcoming 'Seoul Drama Awards 2011' ceremony.

Held through Yahoo! Korea, the poll asked fans to vote for the most popular actor and actress for the year of 2011. Out of 115 contestants, JYJ's Yoochun snagged first place for the male category with a total of 480,000 votes. Jang Geun Suk and Kim Jae Won placed second and third place respectively.

Moon Geun Young led the female category, followed by Park Min Young and Ha Ji Won.

As for the Japanese actors, Kamiki Ryunosuke and Ashida Mana took first place, while in the Taiwanese category, Wu Zheng Di and Jian Man Shu took first.

The most popular actor and actress for Hong Kong were Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung and Charmaine Sheh, and for China, they were Yu Xiao Tong and Chen Hao.

The 'Seoul Drama Awards 2011' will open on August 31st at 5:20 PM KST at the KBS Hall. The event will be broadcasted live through SBS TV.

JYJ appointed Congress ambassadors for UNAIDS and to perform at opening ceremony

As we reported last week, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu (JYJ) have been officially appointed as Congress Ambassadors for the Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific. They will be officially appointed on August 26th at a press conference at BEXCO in Busan for the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP10). Thousands of participants from over 55 countries are estimated to converge in Busan for this event.

Other UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassadors also include princess Stephanie from Monaco, actress Naomi Watts, and other global celebrities.

UNAIDS hopes through JYJ's popularity in Asia, that they might be able to clear up some of the discrimination and prejudice pertaining to AIDS. The ICAAP10 organization committee also stated, "JYJ as ambassadors could be a significant step to create sympathy and further prevention of AIDS."

JYJ expressed, "We need to show our love and interest for AIDS instead of harboring negativity towards it. AIDS is not an incurable disease anymore, and it could be effectively combated through constant treatments."

JYJ also plans to perform at the opening ceremony of the conference.

Alex's lost love is pregnant!

Actress Sin-ae becomes a mother 2 years into her marriage. A friend said, "She found out about her pregnancy and carefully told the people around her. She is happy and is concentrating on her child care now. She is due to give birth next spring".

Sin-ae got married to a two-year-older businessman in May 2009. She wasn't active all the while so people were curious about her. It seems that she was making plans with her husband for the little one.

Her friend said, "She left for America last May and June with her husband. She is happy about the great news that happened not long after they returned. Naturally, she won't be active for a while concentrating on her pregnancy".
