Which entertainment agencies made remarkable moves in the Korean entertainment scene this year? One of the biggest issues that dominated the management business was that persistent demand on Hallyu contents, especially on K-pop, allowed singer and actors to expand their boundaries to overseas market. In the contents producing industry, it has become a matter of common interest that abilities to create and produce more diversified contents as viewers and audiences have higher criteria. There were bigger examples of middle and small sized agencies to make strategic alliance or have merger and acquisitions for retaining stable profit system. In addition to those, private life of stars became more in danger thanks to the Internet, which make the “risk management ability” as the top priority of the management firm should have.

As a wrap-up and recap of this year 2013, TenAsia picked up eight entertainment agencies that impressed the industry and found out their performance, strength and weakness and searched their right direction to go.

On the episode of JTBC’s talk program “Ssulzun” that aired on December 26, the hosts analyzed Sunday variety programs currently on air, comparing SBS’ “Running Man,” KBS’ “1N2D” and MBC’s “Real Men.”

Ratings for the last week of November saw “Real Men” in first place with 17.5% ratings, followed by “Running Man” with 14.4% and “1N2D” trailing with 8%. This changed when Season 3 of “1N2D” started, with ratings shooting up and the show catapulting back into first place. Since then, ratings for “Real Men” and “1N2D” have fluctuated, while ratings for “Running Man” have stayed relatively stable, never straying below the 12% mark.

This led MC Kim Gura to comment that the reason for the show’s steady ratings was the fervent support of its teenage fanbase. Lawyer Kang Yong Suk on his left added, “They are elementary school kids,” referring to the fanbase as a solid “cho-ding fandom.”

Film critic Heo Ji Woong explained that the average viewer might find it difficult to follow the show, which had middle-aged ahjusshis Kim Gura and Kang Yon Suk nodding in agreement. MC Park Ji Yoon said, “It’s too tiring watching them run.”

The hosts concluded that maybe only Kim Heechul would be able to understand the show, but even he noted that there were many times when the show was too immature for him. He cited examples such as the power of stopping time, or “The Avengers” theme as being too cheesy, saying that elementary school students would laugh watching it.

Kim Gura concluded that the teenage fanbase meant that guests were readily available, making the show a useful promotion vehicle for idols, actors and sports stars. The show’s star-studded guest list includes footballer Park Ji Sung, actor Jackie Chan, baseball player Ryu Hyun Jin and the Nation’s First Love Suzy.

"When I watch 'Running Man', I honestly sometimes think it's childish at times. When I see the 'Running Man' members transform into time machine characters, etc, it reminds me of the movie' The Avengers'. Elementary school students seem to think it's funny."

3. [+666, -29] I really don't know why he's on War of Words. Everything he says is just copied off of what he reads on internet article comments.

2013 KBS Music Festival aired on December 27, and reports are already flooding in regards to the show’s most-watched minute.

On the 28th, according to the viewer rating research company TNmS, the music festival’s national household viewer rating was 8.8% (7.9% during part 1 and 9.7% during part 2), 3.5% higher than the show that aired at the same time the previous week. In the midst of this increased popularity, miss A‘s “Hush” performance brought the show a spike in views, recording a broadcast high for the music festival with 13.8% viewership rating.

Coincidentally, the performance by missA did have one small incident, where Min was accidentally hit in the chin by one of the dancers, worrying fans about a possible injury. While she did grab her chin for a moment, she shook it off and finished the performance with no problem. JYP Entertainment, after hearing expressions of concern, later announced that it’s not bad enough to call an ‘injury,’ and that Min is just fine.

Sad news for BTS fans... Suga won't be at the year end ceremonies due to health reasons.

If you remember, Suga was rushed back to Korea earlier this month for an emergency appendectomy, and was released on the 17th. However, it appears that there is some inflammation in the area where he received surgery, so Suga was re-admitted to the hospital on the 26th for treatment.

Big Hit Entertainment informed, "Suga is the most regretful that he will not be able to attend his first end-of-the-year awards ceremony following his debut. The rest of the members will perform on stage as normal. He will try to recover as soon as possible so that he may show a better image next year."

You can catch the rest of BTS performing at the 2013 SBS Gayo Daejun on the 29th, and the 2013 MBC Gayo Daejaejun on the 31st.

Get well soon, Suga!!

EXO’s Xiu Min talked about the success of EXO throughout this year.

EXO recently had an interview with Newsen in a waiting room for a music program after performing Christmas Day.

When asked about how he feels about taking the ‘center’ spot frequently while performing Christmas Day, Xiumin answered, “I’m really happy. There’s so many of us that it’s hard for each of us to be in the center, but this time I got the opportunity to do so.”

As a member of EXO-M, Xiu Min began his career by performing in China, but came to Korea when the group released its first official album XOXO.

“I’m still not totally used to my popularity yet,” said Xiu Min. “I don’t think I deserve to stand in that spot.”

When the reporter commented on his humbleness, he responded, “I’m not being humble, I just accept myself for who I am. I tend to look at the reality.”

I think I came to this spot thanks to the other members,” continued the EXO member. “If I was alone, I don’t think the current popularity would have been possible.

About his current popularity, he said, “I can definitely tell that my face is being recognized by more people since 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards. My name is listed as one of the most searched words and people recognize me on the street when I walk around.”

Receiving much love and support from fans in Korea, Xiu Min said, “I never really looked forward to performing in Korea when I was in China, but now I think it’s enjoyable to perform in Korea. But my base is still China, so I’m ready to work hard when I return to China.”

Xiu Min was also recently chosen as the member who was least likely to cry on MBC’s EXO’s Showtime.

“I think I tend to hold in my tears more compared to the other members,” said Xiu Min. “I want to cry too, but I hold it in. I have emotions, but I’m not very good at expressing them.”

Even though the EXO member is known to be one of the strongest members, he confessed that he has a fear of cats.

I’m afraid of cats, because I was attacked by one when I was young,” confessed Xiu Min.

He also lost a lot of weight since the release of the album XOXO after constantly being on a diet.

“It was really hard back then because I wasn’t eating enough and I had no energy and even got sick often,” said Xiu Min. “But now I eat well and try take care of my health.”
