On the episode of JTBC’s talk program “Ssulzun” that aired on December 26, the hosts analyzed Sunday variety programs currently on air, comparing SBS’ “Running Man,” KBS’ “1N2D” and MBC’s “Real Men.”

Ratings for the last week of November saw “Real Men” in first place with 17.5% ratings, followed by “Running Man” with 14.4% and “1N2D” trailing with 8%. This changed when Season 3 of “1N2D” started, with ratings shooting up and the show catapulting back into first place. Since then, ratings for “Real Men” and “1N2D” have fluctuated, while ratings for “Running Man” have stayed relatively stable, never straying below the 12% mark.

This led MC Kim Gura to comment that the reason for the show’s steady ratings was the fervent support of its teenage fanbase. Lawyer Kang Yong Suk on his left added, “They are elementary school kids,” referring to the fanbase as a solid “cho-ding fandom.”

Film critic Heo Ji Woong explained that the average viewer might find it difficult to follow the show, which had middle-aged ahjusshis Kim Gura and Kang Yon Suk nodding in agreement. MC Park Ji Yoon said, “It’s too tiring watching them run.”

The hosts concluded that maybe only Kim Heechul would be able to understand the show, but even he noted that there were many times when the show was too immature for him. He cited examples such as the power of stopping time, or “The Avengers” theme as being too cheesy, saying that elementary school students would laugh watching it.

Kim Gura concluded that the teenage fanbase meant that guests were readily available, making the show a useful promotion vehicle for idols, actors and sports stars. The show’s star-studded guest list includes footballer Park Ji Sung, actor Jackie Chan, baseball player Ryu Hyun Jin and the Nation’s First Love Suzy.

"When I watch 'Running Man', I honestly sometimes think it's childish at times. When I see the 'Running Man' members transform into time machine characters, etc, it reminds me of the movie' The Avengers'. Elementary school students seem to think it's funny."

3. [+666, -29] I really don't know why he's on War of Words. Everything he says is just copied off of what he reads on internet article comments.

Oppa didn't lie, TBH. And all variety shows are childish in some way or another to appeal to all demographics. But yeah, Running Man has gotten stale for me.

Netizens be pressed.

Most variety shows can be childish so it's not a shocker.

1.) childish =/= bad

2.) Running Man is childish sometimes.

I can sort of see where Heechul came from + why he said it, but these netizens are calling him hypocritical. War of Words isn't helping him at all.

He's always been running his mouth a lot though. The only difference is now, everything he says gets turned into a headline.

But it's not like it's done seriously anyway. The members themselves are embarrassed by it. It's become a running gag now with the PDs/Writers coming up with the most ridiculous things to try and embarrass the cast. That's why it's funny.

And didn't Suju dress up as Avengers characters at the airport?

Boy, I like you, but you are a member of Suju, you only have a career because of childish variety.
RM did get boring. but I don't watch all the episodes, I'm maybe missing something.

NGL, sometimes I do feel variety shows get a bit too ridiculous. I love Weekly Idol but ocassionally the MC's antics get a bit cringe worthy.Same with Running Man. But keep in mind the demographics of most idols groups are middle schoolers so itk inda makes sense for them to aim towards them
Heechul needs to ssh.

Attacking the messenger doesn't make the message any less true. Yes, suju songs are childish, but you have to admit that running man is childish at times too. It seems like netizens agree with him, they just don't like that he's the one that brought it up.

mte.

I mean yeah sure, he's childish. I doubt the other panelists would have thought him, a 30+ yo man, part of the show's target audience if he wasn't. But it doesn't mean that there's nothing that gets too childish even for him.

He didn't lie, though! The word maybe was badly chosen, because "childish" gives a not so good vibe, but the meaning is spot on imo and that's not a bad thing, at least for me. I actually like korean variety shows because of how carefree they are.

Childish isn't even the right word. The show is very deliberate and self-aware about its silliness. That's the point. Because the show is so intentional, I don't think it can be called childish, especially since childish has such a perjorative connotation. The point of the show has flown right over Heechul's head and it ain't that hard to grasp. Come on dude, it's ok to be critical of your colleagues cause I know that's your ~thing~ but at least make sense.

Truth. The show would shut down a mall and you'd have a huge game of hide and seek. it's abit of fun.

Sorry but this article is wankbait (not blaming OP. Blaming the original writer) For one all the other cast established that Running Man was immature, and then tried to isolate Heechul saying he'd like it. Not only did Heechul support and say he watched it, but he also established that despite that he felt it was too immature sometimes. He walked a fine line. Also netizens, he's a weirdo, not immature. Any idol who can cope with that life and move up in ranks and promote those around him is pretty mature. It takes alot to do that.

Let me ignore my inner stan though. I'd go on forever. Point is, this article is setting people's minds against Heechul before they even read it. That's tha booshit.

Amen. Heechul always toes the line and never full on insults anyone and almost always ends up promoting something in a roundabout way.

TBH, Heechul keeps getting into a lot of headlines this year because of this show. The press takes one sentence from him and blows it up, no matter the context of the sentence he said and what everyone else around him was saying. It's frustrating to see all these wank bait posts about him.

idg how it's hypocritical? Just because I can be childish/immature at times, doesn't mean I can't say something else is too.
And a bit of childishness is the point of many variety shows, from what I can tell.

It's kinda funny when people make judgements based on out-of-context articles, though. If they stopped getting so worked up about it, then we'd no longer have to see articles about every single thing that leaves Heechul's mouth~

I knew a news article would come from this...it's good that Heechul doesn't care but they literally took one line of what he said and blew it up...while ignoring the rest of his words and the panel

Not that he is wrong because Running Man is deliberately childish after all...hello they play hide and seek via ripping nametags because it is all in good fun...

insulting yoo jae suk is like asking for death by comments. netizens are not gonna let this one slide what he said is relatively true but he and other super junior members do the most childish things all the time so he is in no position to badmouth running man. Heechul might be sassy and funny but he never says anything insightful ever he comes of as a jackass
