KBS 2TV has reported that their two programs, “100 Points out of 100” and “On Your Command, Sir“, will be coming to an end due to a revamping of their Saturday line-up. An official from KBS stated, “‘100 Points out of 100′ and ‘On Your Command, Sir’ will be removed from the Saturday evening time slot and replaced with new variety programs under the tentative title, ‘Declaration of Freedom Saturday‘.”

“Declaration of Freedom Saturday”, which will include “Secret” and “Immortal Song 2“, is a new format that is modeled after KBS’s Sunday line-up, “Happy Sunday.” “Secret” is a program centered around the secrets of seven celebrities who will be talking about their secrets and playing accompanying games. As reported previously, “Immortal Song 2″ is a singing competition program where the best vocal talents within idol groups show off their skills.

KBS officials added, “For now, it was decided that ‘100 Points out of 100′ and ‘On Your Command, Sir’ will be canceled. However, there is a possibility that the two programs will be combined to form a new program. There are still many variables, so after further discussions, we will decide by the middle of next week.”

6 idols confirmed for 'Immortal Song 2'

Earlier, it was reported that KBS was coming up with a new singing variety show with an all idol cast titled “Immortal Song 2.” Although a tentative line-up was released earlier, producers have recently confirmed a final six-member line-up.

On May 4th, PD Kwon Jae Young tweeted, “Changmin, Hyorin, Yoseob, Min, Yesung, and IU have all come together. If they compete with a song by Shim Soo Bong… I think it’d be fun. Have fun kids, don’t be too nervous.”

A representative from KBS confirmed through Newsen, “SHINee’s Jonghyun will not be able to join the program due to conflicting schedules.  We are currently in discussion with 2PM’s Junsu to be added in later.”

The first recording will be held on May 16th. The pilot episode is currently scheduled for June.

Will.i.am Meets 2NE1 in Korea

Black Eyed Peas’ star rapper/producer Will.i.am has met with the members of 2NE1 at the YG Entertainment headquarters in Seoul on May 2nd. Upon his arrival in Seoul on Monday, Will.i.am held a four hour meeting with Yang Hyun Suk, the head of YGE, and their main producer Teddy to go over plans for 2NE1’s future promotions in the U.S. Following the meeting, the star rapper took photos with 2NE1, which was immediately posted on his Twitter page, as he expressed his willingness to produce a new single for the girl group.

Will.i.am and 2NE1 have worked together multiple times already in New York, Los Angeles, and London. In a recent interview, he said, “I’m working really hard to make 2NE1 not just a popular Korean band, but a super star across many countries,” so many fans are anticipating the release of a joint album in the U.S. following this meeting.

In the mean time, 2NE1 is expected to unveil their new single, “Lonely,” on May 12th. Will.i.am will wrap up his three-day trip in Seoul on May 4th.

SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- The Louvre Museum in Paris isn't normally associated with South Korean pop culture. But last weekend, hundreds of young French people rallied in front of the historic museum, calling for an extra Korean pop music concert.

After tickets for a June 10 show sold out in just 15 minutes, the flash mob picketed and danced to the Korean tunes in a mostly harmless gathering, while demanding another concert be scheduled. They wanted their chance to see their favorite South Korean stars without having to pay an exorbitant amount of money for scalped tickets.

Experts and record label executives here say such a rally won't likely be a one-time event, as Korean pop music, branded "K-pop," continues to ride the wave of video-sharing Web sites, social networking services (SNS) and other Internet tools to international prominence.

Ian Rush and a team of Liverpool FC coaches will fly home to England from Korea on Friday lunchtime after a very successful three-day football clinic in Seoul.

The event, organised by Standard Chartered, saw over 220 children - including 20 visually impaired kids - receive specialised coaching - the 'Liverpool way'. For Rush, the eight coaches and a crew from LFC TV, it was a hectic schedule trying to pack so much into just three whole days but the entire experience was fantastic. TVXQ, or rather Tohoshinki, to release a new song

TVXQ (Yunho and Changmin) made their big Korean comeback in January with their 5th studio album "Why (Keep Your Head Down)" after their last album release in 2008. Fans showed their continued support to the group despite only 2 members taking part of the album. TVXQ were the first group to achieve the 100,000 units of album sold for 2011 and were followed by Big Bang and CNBLUE.

Now, it seems that the duo will move on to Japan for promotional activities. They had also released the Japanese single, "Why (Keep Your Head Down)", but promotions were kept to a minimum.

According to their official Japanese site (toho-jp.net), Yunho and Changmin will release a new song titled "I Don’t Know" on May 11th. The song will be released on both mu-mo and the Japanese mobile music site, Rekochoku.

X-5 is already receiving international love calls

Open World Entertainment’s new boy group, X-5, is already showing signs of becoming the next Hallyu star just a few weeks into their debut.

They’ve been receiving numerous international love calls since the release of their debut single, “Xenos.” Now that they’ve completed their round of debuts on music programs, love calls from Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore are reportedly becoming more frequent.

Representatives stated, “Prior to X-5’s debut, they’ve been receiving a lot of love calls from K-Pop fans overseas. Their video teasers have received international interest, and now that they’ve finally completed their debut performances, they’re receiving a lot of requests to perform at K-Pop events.”

They continued, “Japan has especially taken an interest in X-5. It is true that we’ve been receiving advancement opportunities from big Japanese companies.”

Although they’re considering the offers, representatives stated that they will be waiting a bit, as the boys have only just debuted.

Flawless MBLAQ reaches #1 on Oricon + more updates.

Yesterday, the boys of MBLAQ held a special fan event and celebrated their Japanese debut single, “Your Luv” placing 2nd on the vaunted Oricon charts. Well, now there’s cause for further celebration.

At the event, G.O commented, “We would love to become #1 on the Oricon ranking chart.” His wishes came to fruition as MBLAQ has reached #1 on the Oricon daily chart, they’ve sold a total of 11,066 copies of “Your Luv” to date. MBLAQ’s mentor, Rain, was so proud of this achievement that he posted a screenshot on his official official Twitter page.

In the mean time, MBLAQ will continue their fan tour across Japan later this month. They have two upcoming dates on May 23rd (Osaka @ Nanba Hatch) and on May 26th (Tokyo @ Zepp Tokyo). Tickets go on sale today (selection via raffle) and are priced at 7800 yen ($96 USD).

“Shinhwa Company” has been born.

Korea’s longest-running group Shinhwa, has set up a company bearing their group’s name. It’s the first time that any Korean idol group has set up a company to manage their own group activities, and it seems that their every move will be receiving much attention from now onwards.

Shinhwa Company will be headed by members Eric and Lee Minwoo, while remaining members Shin Hyesung, Kim Dongwan, Junjin and Andy will be key shareholders.

The decision was reached after a 6-hour marathon meeting on 30 April between Eric, Lee Minwoo and Open World Entertainment, who holds the rights to the Shinhwa trademark.

They reached an agreement to establish Shinhwa Company, with Eric’s current management company Top Class Entertainment managing all of Shinhwa’s activities in Korea, and Open World managing the rights to all of Shinhwa’s overseas activities and promotions.

By Andrei Lankov, an associate professor at Kookmin University in Seoul, and adjunct research fellow at the Research School of Pacifica and Asian Studies, Australian National University. He graduated from Leningrad State University with a PhD in Far Eastern history and China, with emphasis on Korea. He has published books and articles on Korea and North Asia.


Once every decade or two, television screens show powerful and memorable images such as the toppling statue of a tyrant. The destruction of a dictator's statue makes for a potent political symbol, and few revolutionaries can resist the temptation.

It is said that sooner or later this fate will befall statues of Kim Il-sung, in 1945 a minor guerrilla commander who, with much Soviet backing, took power in North Korea and remained its absolute ruler until his death in 1994. However, this author is somewhat skeptical about the prospects: I would not be surprised to learn that some time in the 2030s it is trendy to keep a portrait of the long-deceased dictator in a North Korean house.

So, will Kim Il-sung's statues be demolished? Probably, in the heat of revolutionary enthusiasm, we are likely to see many statues toppled and many portraits burnt. But we should not be too surprised if in a couple of years, such portraits and maybe even statues start popping up again in what was known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Netizens name Girls' Day the No.1 girl group?

SNSD's successor as the No.1 girl group seems to have been passed on to Girls' Day according to a poll from the community website, DC Inside (www.dcinside.com). The poll took place from April 26th thru May 3rd and asked netizens, "Post SNSD, which rookie girl group is the most anticipated?" In the survey conducted, Girls' Day (Sojin, Jihae, Mina, Yura, Hyeri) took No.1.

Girls' Day received 21% of the votes, or 1903 out of 9065 votes. The group made their debut in 2010 with a cute concept and were criticized. However, they have come a long way since then and despite having a rocky start, has become one of the successful girl group this year. They made waves with their 2nd single "Nothing Lasts Forever," and showed off their powerful vocal and dance.
