DBSK is Number 10 on Oricon for the first half of 2009

Oricon recently released their mid year album sales ranking for 2009 and TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki did better than most expected. “The Secret Code” came in at number 10 with a sales figure of 248,000 for the first half of 2009. This placed them above popular artists such as KAT-TUN who had 237,000 sales for "Break the Records -by you & for you-" and Utada who had 228,000 sales for "This is The One." BoA who released a combo "Best Album and American Debut album" was ranked 25th with a sales figure of 131,000.

Big Bang GDragon-TaeYang-DaeSung for solo album relay release later this year

5-member group Big Bang will comeback with a special project the later half of this year. Leader cum team producer GDragon, TaeYang and DaeSung will each release their solo album.

YG Entertainment said on the 30th, “Currently promoting in Japan, Big Bang members GDragon, TaeYang and Daesung will each release their solo album one after another.”

According to YG Entertainment, GDragon will release his first solo album in August. As the leader and team producer, this first solo album has been much of an interests amongst fans.

Coming October TaeYang will also release a new solo album. He had his first solo album released last May with the title song ‘Look Only At Me’, which released much love from music fans. His upcoming 2nd minialbum will eb released in October. TaeYang is known for his power dance performance and much anticipation is for his new minialbum.

For as for member DaeSung, he will release his first solo album end of this year. YG said, “He released trot digital single ‘Look at me, Gwisoon’ and has gather great popularity for his trot hit, and coming end of year he will also release his own solo minialbum. This first solo album will not be a trot album but be a song which will bring out DaeSung’s special singing abilities.”

While GDragon, TaeYang and DaeSung will get busy with their own solo albums, TOP and SeungRi will meet their fans through their acting projects. Both of them have been casted for SBS TeleCinema – 19 to be aired in October.

Meanwhile, Big Bang’s debut Japanese single ‘My Heaven’ is doing very well up the Oricon daily and weekly charts at #2 and #3 positions.

Goo Hye Sun held a press conference in a gallery in InSaDong on 1st July for her ‘Tango’ exhibition.

Not only is she an artist, she is also a novelist and actress. And on the day, she had revealed that her role model is Leonardo Davinci.

Goo Hye Sun said, “Through my book ‘Tango’, I have expressed many thoughts of my own.”

When asked what was her dream from young, she said, “I wanted to be a singer, actress, artist etc. I had many dreams. I wanted to be a singer so I joined an entertainment company and then I became an actress. And I think there are always great opportunities tomorrow.”

The popular 9 girl group SNSD released a mini album on the 29th, getting ready to seize command of the music world for the summer. SNSD has released their title song ‘tell me your wish’ on the 22nd online. Also, from the 26th to 28th, they have appeared on KBS 'Music Bank', MBC 'Music Core', and SBS 'Inkigayo', performing ‘Tell me your wish’ along with the choreography to the audience.

With the previous mini album and their title song ‘Gee’, they have set the unprecedented record of 9 consecutive weeks on the #1 spot for Music Bank, and was the most downloaded song for the first half of 2009. Album sales also exceeded 100k.

Thanks to the record-breaking performance of ‘Gee’, much attention is being paid for SNSD’s new album. We observed how SNSD is appealing to their fans with charms that are different than that of ‘Gee’.

SS501 signs with Warner Music Taiwan, album reservation sales reached that of Golden Disk

SS501 has signed up with Warner music for their Chinese market advance.

On 29th June, there was a press conference held by Warner Music Taiwan that SS501 will release their 1st Solo album which will include songs like ‘Deja Vu’, ‘The song sang for you’, ‘You’re my heaven’ etc.

What is special about this is that just the reservation sales for the album has already reach the volume of that of a Golden Disk.

After their fanmeeting on 27th June, SS501 also held a photo event where the proceeds 100K KRW was donated to a social association in Taiwan. SS501 has voiced that they are happy to be able to meet their Taiwanese fans and also do something for a good cause through this event.

Meanwhile, the boys will have their 1st concert performance off their 1st Asian tour on 1st and 2nd August in Seoul.

It is said that So Nyeo Shi Dae’s new song ‘Tell me Your Wish’ is faster selling as compared to their previous hit ‘Gee’ released earlier this year.

According to Hanteo, ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ has sold over 24K copies offline in just 2 days into its release. Back then with the song ‘Gee’, So Nyeo Shi Dae managed to sell over 23K copies only after 1 week into its release.

The girls are also hitting the 100K mark for all their 3 albums released, a sales volume that even the country’s best male idol group will find it hard to achieve.

It seems that the song ‘Tell Me Your Wish’ is gaining popularity faster than ‘Gee’, the song went up to realtime chart at #1 on the day of its release on 22nd June.

The song then went up to #6 immediately on 23rd June on music charts, ‘Gee’ had went up to #10 positions on music charts on first time back then. And right now the song is up #1 on various music charts, bringing back the So Nyeo syndrome.

Album sales for the first half of 2009

The online album stats site Hanteo Chart reported that Super Junior topped album sales in the first half of this year. Released on March 13, Super Junior’s third album with the title song “Sorry Sorry” sold nearly 110 thousand copies in the first six months of 2009.

Following in second place is Girls’ Generation. The girls’ mini album containing “Gee” was rolled out in early January, selling over 72 thousand copies. Girls’ Generation was undoubtedly the hottest group in the earlier part of the year and hopes to ride the momentum into the second half with their new release “Genie (a.k.a. Tell Me Your Wish).”

Legendary Seo Tae-ji took third place with his second single “Atomos Part Secret” from his eighth album. If his first eighth album single, “Atomos Part Moai” released in late July last year is included, his two singles related to “Seotaji 8th Atomos” have recorded more than 200 thousand copies in album sales.

SG Wannabe came in fourth in album sales (nearly 40,000 copies sold) with their sixth album released in April.

Coming from the same company as their sunbaes Dong Bang Shin Ki and Super Junior, SHINee who has caused a storm in Korea's music industry has also spread their immense popularity to Japan, releasing the Japanese version of their album in answer to their fans' call, and also setting a date for their first event in Japan. The first interview that they have done with the Japanese media, they were as nervous as they had been on debut, but having completed their album, their excited faces still shone brightly....

2NE1 ‘I Don’t Care’ is #1 up on music charts

2NE1 released their new song ‘I Don’t Care’ title song off their 1st minialbum on 1st July at 2pm, and has received overwhelming responses.

The song is already up #1 on real time charts, giving them the names as ‘the best new singers’. Bringing another new meaning from the ‘war of the girlgroups’ with other groups like So Nyeo Shi Dae and 4Minute.

YG said, “We are very surprised the song went up to #1 as soon as it is revealed. I think that it will be great if the responses for their activities be as good.”

The song is a R&B pop number with a reggae melody and medium tempo, written by Kush and Teddy. All eyes are on the girls if they will have consecutive 3 hits with their previous hits like ‘Lollipop’ and ‘Fire’.

The girls will release their 1st minialbum on 8th July.

An opinion piece from The Korea Times:

The Supreme Court's recent decision to compensate Shinhan Engineering and Construction at the expense of the estate of the late actress Choi Jin-sil reveals a troubling inequality at the core of Korean society. In handing down its ruling, the country's top court censured Choi for coming forward and declaring herself a victim of domestic violence, saying it constituted a failure to maintain proper "social and moral honor."

Even a casual observer of current events would not have failed to notice the contrast between this position and the posthumous treatment of former President Roh Moo-hyun. While Choi's reputation lies in tatters following Shinhan's successful litigation, the late former President is being hailed as a martyr, a bastion of decency who crumbled under the pressure of a dictatorial regime.

All differences aside (and there are many), there remains a striking parallel that will bind the pair in the public's memory for years to come: Choi and Roh, both high-profile public figures, resorted to suicide amid personal and legal storms.

Singer Ok Joo Hyun, also known as the musical diva, will release a new song after being as part of Fin.K.L.

The new song is a duet ‘Farewell revision’ between her and new singer The Ray. This song is written by Kim Seok Chan who also wrote many Fin.K.L’s songs like ‘To my boyfriend’ and ‘White’ etc. Kim also worked with Lee Hyori for her 1st album.Ok Joon Hyun had recorded this new song amidst her busy schedule with musicals like ‘Chicago’ and ‘Broadway 42 times’.

Meanwhile new singer The Ray has powerful vocals and is known to sing R&B songs.

The song ‘Farewell revision’ will be released on 2nd July.

Summer Action Flicks Are Coming

Every summer, big budget Hollywood movies flow in, and many worry about the potential threat to homegrown films. Recent trends, however, suggest that competition is healthy.

"The fact that such a comparison (between national and international franchises) is even possible is unique; there aren't so many countries around the world where domestic films can compete with American ones," Han Seung-hee, researcher at the Korean Film Council, told The Korea Times.

After the turn of the new millennium, the Korean film industry enjoyed rapid growth, with blockbusters rewriting box office history each year. But the market plummeted for the first time last year, and investment and production hit an all time low. Moviegoers even criticized films that fared well at the box office as being formulaic.

So far, 2009 looks better. The success of "A Frozen Flower" and "Scandal Makers" opened up a promising new year. Although February and March were rather lukewarm months - Viewership was split among three crime thrillers, "The Scam," "Marine Boy" and "Hand Phone", "Private Eye" picked things up and was widely loved for its unique themes.

Sleeper hit movies such as "Old Partner" and "Breathless" also revamped the cinema scene, proving that small budget films can make it big. Despite what was anticipated to be a tough competition against star-studded imports like "Star Trek: The Beginning" and "Terminator 4," "My Girlfriend Is an Agent" reaped large profits. Park Chan-wook's Cannes Jury Prize winning "Thirst" also faired well.

Portals Rebel Against Censorship

This is a portal homepage that was forced to block a post criticizing Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon for his decision to limit rallies in front of City Hall. The city took advantage of a regulation requiring Web sites to suspend the posting of articles for a minimum of 30 days if they are deemed misleading or defamatory.

After grumbling about the government attempts to impose rules for Internet users, the country's Internet companies are finally showing a collective backbone.

The Korea Internet Self-Governance Organization (KISO), an industry lobby of seven major Internet companies including NHN, Daum, SK Communications and Yahoo! Korea, said it looks to limit the say of government officials in its filtering process for content published on the Web sites of member companies.

"It is already established in theory that it is held against government institutions and local governments to protect basic rights (of people) as their duty. But they are not defined as the claimer of such rights," said a KISO official.

"The past court rulings have also established that public services carried out by public figures could not be subject to libel suits, unless it is firmly established that the reports were based on falsified facts. We have no intention of blocking Internet users from producing healthy criticism on the government."

Super Junior sings 'The Partner' OST

The idol boy band Super Junior wrapped up a third round of album activities this past weekend and has begun to prepare for their next album. However, we can still hear their voice in the new KBS2 drama "The Partner."

"Sorry Sorry," the title song of their third album, as well as "It's You" have been big hits. Super Junior has now sung "Hero," the theme song of "The Partner." The rhythmic song with lyrics of hope sung by SJ members Yesung, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun is expected to be a hit melody.

Rock band Rumble Fish, which is set to release their fourth regular album in July, also took part in the drama's OST. Their song "Love To Me" is a bright number about a dreamy love to come one day.

Super Junior and Rumble Fish are known to have enjoyed the recording, the songs being bright and jovial. The music director of "The Partner," Lee Pil-ho, said, "It is a court drama but not a heavy, dark story so I tried to write songs that way and cast young, fresh singers as well." After the recording, SJ members said, "The song is great and we have a good feeling about the drama cast and story also. It may be a blast. We'll also watch the drama," as they conveyed their confidence and affection about the drama to the producers.

The new Wednesday-Thursday series on KBS2 is a court drama with no guns and swords but featuring a battle of words by the lawyers. The series, combining the genres of romance, thriller and mystery with stories to amuse and touch viewers' hearts, aired its first episode on June 24.

30 Years On, Insooni Sees Heyday Still Ahead

Last year she celebrated the 30th anniversary of her debut, and she recently released her 17th album. So what further dreams could Insooni have? "I want to have a concert that I can be 100 percent satisfied with, where I feel I sang the best I could. It's hard, because no singer is 100 percent happy with the way they sing," the Korean songstress says. And she wants her songs to reach a wide and diverse audience. "It's very fulfilling when I hear people say that I've helped to bring together different generations."

Insooni is known for her frugality, but when it comes to investing in her on-stage dresses, for the sake of her fans she does not hold back. "I have about 1,000 dresses for performing. Even though there's no more room in my dress room, I can't throw them away because trends come in cycles," she says.

China's Food Safety Law Means Caution for Korean Stars

Korean stars who appear in Chinese food advertising will have to check whether the advertiser's food is safe after a new food safety law came into effect this month. The aim is to prevent further international embarrassment after a string of scandals such as the deadly baby milk scare brought Chinese food products into global disrepute.

Under the new law, Chinese consumers can claim up to 10 times of the retail price for food that failed to meet the standard required by the law. A celebrity or organization endorsing such products in false or exaggerated advertising will be held responsible along with the manufacturer and the distributor. If any harmful substance is detected in the product and consumers suffered damage, the celebrity who appeared in the advertisement will have to compensate the victims.

According to the KOTRA Business Center in Shanghai, Jang Na-ra, Rain and Super Junior currently appear in advertising for food products in China, and Song Hye-kyo, Kim Hee-sun and Jeon Ji-hyun in commercials for cosmetics and shampoo. Kwon Gi-young, the head of the Chinese office of the Korea Culture and Content Agency, said, "Since it will be difficult for celebrities to scrutinize the safety of food produced by a company, they will at least have to carefully look at its credibility and market size."

SHINee's First Photobook to be Released on July 15th

Contemporary band SHINee, who've been become popular with 'Juliette' will release a photobook

From the 2nd to the 14th, preorders of the photobook will be available on Kyobobook, Yes24, Interpark, UFO Town & website, and Offline Hottracks Store. It is planned to be released on the 15th.

This photobook was prepared so that it will not only include music performances, but will also have SHINee showing their various charms and them taking the lead in fashion. In order to really express their attractiveness, SHINee traveled to the vast, natural sceneries of New Zealand. They worked for one week without any time for breaks. In these pictures, you can feel SHINee's various images from innocence to coolness to sheek city men.

Rain's 'Ninja Assassin' to be released in November

Starring South Korea pop star Rain (Jung Ji-hoon, 28) as a main character, "Ninja Assassin" will hit world theaters, starting on Nov. 25 in the United States.

Rain has already made his debut in Hollywood by starring in a supporting role in "Speed Racer," produced by Larry and Andy Wachowski of "The Matrix."

In their next film, "Ninja Assassin," the Wachowski brothers set the star as a leading character.

Produced in Berlin Germany and inspired by traditional Japanese culture, "Ninja Assassin" plots a ninja's betrayal and revenge.

In the movie, Rain appears as Raizo, taken from the streets and raised into one of deadliest assassins in the world, by a mysterious ninja clan. After a cruel murder of his friend by the clan, Raizo turns away from the clan and prepares for revenge.

Besides the singer, the film stars Naomie Harris from "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" (2006), and Ben Miles from "V for Vendetta," (2005).

Dineyra - Raqsga tushgin

Sound familiar? xD That's right, it's Genie, but... the Uzbekistanian/Turkic/whatever version. This was actually a pretty good song. I prefer Genie for how much more upbeat it is, but this one is nice too in its mellow mood. :) More sultry and seductive. What do you think?

Oh and people are of course going to get into a huff over SM being unoriginal again, but remember that there was all this acclaim over Yoo YoungJin having helped write it. The way I see it, there's two things that could be going on.

1) SM is a big liar and homg plagiarism.
2) Yoo YoungJin did write the song, but sold it to Dineyra as well.

I hope SM isn't stupid enough to have done the former!

YYJ only did the lyrics and additional arrangements. Personally, I think he made the song rockin'. ... Did I just say that? I did, didn't I? xD

Anyway, there's also rumors that Genie has the only official copyrighted release, sooooo there might be a big no no move from someone after all. It's just a rumor, though, and I would take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, to clarify something about all these claims that SM is remaking. Just because one version was released earlier, does not mean that SM heard the release and decided to remake it. DongBangs stated they started to record Mirotic long before Sarah Connor's release of the song.

In the meantime, remember that a good song is a good song and this is pop - how much originality can we really expect? xD Some of my favorite SM Town songs have actually been the co-copyrighted releases.

Ogamdo unveils more racy posters

Given that the star-studded omnibus movie Ogamdo [오감도] is touted as a story of “love beyond eros” told five different ways (there are five directors helming five different vignettes), it’s no surprise that its promotional material continues to be provocative. (For instance, the first poster got people talking with the nude woman it featured.)

In fact, the film has received an adults-only rating due to its “frank sexual depictions” and “provocative content.” Some of the narrative threads include a newlywed couple’s upset love, a first encounter for a young couple, a “peculiar relationship” between a famous movie actress and a new actress, a woman who lives with her dead husband’s girlfriend, and so forth.

The five directors, each in charge of directing one of the storylines, are Byun Hyuk, Heo Jin-ho, Yoo Young-shik, Min Kyu-dong, and Oh Ki-hwan. Ogamdo opens on July 9.

Wooyoung, a member of performance boy band 2PM, confessed that there were girls in Muhan Girls who close to his ideal

2PM is now promoting their single “I hate you” and has recently recorded MbcEvery1 Muhan Girls special episode for Chilseok Festival.

During the shooting of the couple selection, Song Eunee asked Wooyoung “Is there anyone in Muhan Girls that you like?”. He openly said “There are 2 people who are close to my ideal”

Muhan Girls is consist of 6 members ; Song Eunee, Jung Ga Eun, Baek Boram, HwangBo, Shin Bong Seon, Kin Shin Young. Wooyoung’s words had led to speculation “I think his ideal girls are Jung Ga Eun and Baek Boram ”

Also, Leader Jaebeom, who had revealed that his ideal was Scarlett Johansson, said “Amongst Muhan girls, there’s someone who looks like Scarlett Johansson” made everyone burst out laughing
