The popular 9 girl group SNSD released a mini album on the 29th, getting ready to seize command of the music world for the summer. SNSD has released their title song ‘tell me your wish’ on the 22nd online. Also, from the 26th to 28th, they have appeared on KBS 'Music Bank', MBC 'Music Core', and SBS 'Inkigayo', performing ‘Tell me your wish’ along with the choreography to the audience.

With the previous mini album and their title song ‘Gee’, they have set the unprecedented record of 9 consecutive weeks on the #1 spot for Music Bank, and was the most downloaded song for the first half of 2009. Album sales also exceeded 100k.

Thanks to the record-breaking performance of ‘Gee’, much attention is being paid for SNSD’s new album. We observed how SNSD is appealing to their fans with charms that are different than that of ‘Gee’.

Music

‘Tell me your wish’ is being appraised as a contemporary pop / dance song that is full of beat. Many comment that this song is well-suited for the passionate season of summer.

The fact that SM entertainment’s chief composer Yu Youngjin along with Yu Hanjin and European composer team ‘Dsign Music’ came together to create this one song has been the basis of good appraisal.

However, the song ‘Tell me your wish’ lacks the hook-style characteristics compared to ‘Gee’ which continuously repeated ‘gee gee gee gee’ and ‘baby baby’. This resulted in some fans pointing out that ‘Tell me your wish is ‘less addicting’ and ‘harder to grasp’.

Nevertheless, this ‘unnoticeable’ weakness does not pose a problem upon SNSD, as they are already experiencing explosive popularity for ‘Tell me your wish’ from its fans.
Pre-sales of the new mini album has already reached 80k. Also, ‘Tell me your wish’ has sustained its top spot for most downloaded song for over a week since its release.

Choreography

The main difference between Gee and Tell me your wish is that the movements in ‘Tell me your wish’ are bigger and broader. If the side-way walking ‘Crab leg dance’ was the capture point for ‘Gee’, then the capture point for ‘Tell me your wish’ is overall synchronization and balance.

The seductive arm & hand movements, broad leg movements, and flexible hip movements are placed throughout the song. The quick kicking motion of the leg is already being called ‘the shuttle-kicking dance’ and is gaining massive popularity.

These big movements in ‘Tell me your wish’ are being appraised as ‘refreshing’. Many fans agree that to enjoy this song to its maximum potential, one must watch the choreography while listening to the song.

Stage Costume

During the comeback stage of SNSD at 'Music Bank', they wore Marine-style jackets with short hot pants. They changed the hot pants into mini-skirts during their performance at 'Inkigayo'. Overall, the fashion of SNSD is being appraised as ‘well suited for summer, refreshing but at the same time with intense sensation’.

These costumes indicate that SNSD have become more mature than when they were performing ‘Gee’. In fact, six of the nine members have celebrated their 21st birthday, which is the legal age in Korea.

Now, the concern is whether if SNSD will be able to reanimate the scorching storm of ‘Gee’ with ‘Tell me your wish’, equipped with new music style, choreography, and costume.

I honestly think Genie >>>>> Gee.
Especially after the 'DJ put it back on', TaeYeon rocks the house.

Etude sucks though.

Agreed!
That part is so good.

The whole mini-album sucks besides Genie, imo

---> Genie. I also really like Gee too. I kinda like them equally, although I think I like Genie better.

The lack of major repetition in Tell Me Your Wish is WHY I like the song. It's not as 'Hey look at me I'm catchy!' as Gee was, imo.

i wld say Genie is a different kind of catchy than Gee, IMO. it didn't catch my attention much at the begining, but its a song that really grows on you after listening to it a few times and after watching their performances.

and LOL at 'shuttle-kicking dance'. WHAT.

I love both songs but I was definitely hooked to "Genie" when I first heard it whereas I learned to love Gee....Overall I think Genie is a better song...it doesn't have the catchy hook that Gee does but it's got the beat and definitely the VOCALS...right from the start Genie's vocals, with TaeYeon starting, is amazing...

BUT I really don't see Genie having the longevity that Gee did for all the same reasons why I like Genie more...A better song doesn't always mean "catchy", meaning the average person will loose interest faster...but the biggest difference between the two, everything Gee meant a new trend...while Genie is the total opposite
1. crab vs. shuttle-kicking dance...while it looks fun it's not as addictive as the crab dance PLUS normal people don't have SNSD legs...we'd all just look like we are exercising & not doing a hot dance move
2. COLORFUL skinny jeans vs. sailor outfits...skinny jeans could definitely be worn anywhere and anytime...but sailor outfits?? yeah I'd like to see kids wearing that to school or people going to work in sailor outfits..
3. easy & simple vs. fast & complex lyrics...anyone could sing Gee, from a child to a grandpa...whereas Genie may be too fast for some people to sing along to.
4. simple vs. complex dance... Gee's dance was so simple & addictive, reason why those who didn't even like SNSD knew the dance, while Genie's more interesting it is WAY too complex for the average joe/jane who doesn't like SNSD to actually take the time to learn

WOW sorry I just wrote an entire essay..lol

I liked both songs at first listen, but overall, I think Genie's a better song. It's probably just because I'm not a big fan of ~cutesy~. I like Genie's choreography a lot more, too. it'seasierformetodo D:

I like "Tell Me Your Wish" better 'cause it's less annoying-after-a-while.
I haaate the ending with all the giggling though.
And Tiffany's(?) "DJ, put/bring it back on." It was so unncessary & overdone.
I would so cut that all out but idk how. ):
Other than that, I love the song ♥

I was hooked to Genie much faster than Gee, to be honest. I love both, but Genie to me is a stronger song. Their dancing and singing ability are really shown in the song as well. I think they pull off with both styles anyway, therefore the recent change is all good.

I found I liked Genie since the preview. It took me ages to finally give into Gee >.<
And Genie dance confuses me. That leg movement. Wtf. CAN'T DO IT I end up falling all over the place -> I just fail though.

Genie > Gee imo

Same here. Actually, you know what it took to really get me into Gee? Younha's cover of it. It made me like the original more, but I still like Younha's version best. You have no idea how much I wish there was an mp3 of it, because I want that shit on my iPod.

i like genie a whole lot better than gee... gee just became annoying to me after a couple of weeks.
but, imho, i doubt genie will do as well as gee because it's not as easy to sing and the dance is far harder to just play along.
while people could easily remember the cute choreo from gee and imitate it everywhere and get everyone hooked, genie's is just much harder (and much prettier 8D!)

(hey, i liked the colourful skinny jeans D:)
but army themed outfits + hotpants ♥♥

wish they'd promote 'boyfriend' after genie, it's just so freaking catchy/cute!

the difference between genie and gee is that genie has an extra syllable.

oh. you mean musically. yeah, it's kinda different. i still like gee more though.

LOVE Genie's song, but I don't care for the dance. After watching SHINee and the body of limp noodle that is Taemin, every dance is SO much easier. XD

The difference in the choreogrpahy that stands out to me in a huge way is that Gee had more movements that went with the lyrics. All the "no no no no no" and yawning when the words are about sleeping, eye-related movements during "nuni busyeo" - almost the whole song is choreographed like that.

I think people unconsciously really love that because they can remember it better in their minds when they hear the song on the radio.

Genie just pretty much doesn't have that. Not that I don't like it, I just... don't remember what it looks like when I'm not watching it.

I love Genie for one reason and one reason ONLY: No hook!

Korean pop really needs to get away from this lame hook phase. It's really cheap.
