Yerin Baek Talks About Genres & Inspirations For New Album “tellusaboutyourself’

Yerin Baek had an interview posted on Naver, she discusses various topics as what inspires her new album, who inspires her, what genres to expect from the new album, and more!

On the album feeling like she’s opening her diary to the public:
“I have arranged the songs in the album in chronological order according to the days they were written, like a calendar. The working title of the tracks were all dates like ‘0123’ ‘0216’. It’s actually a little scary because it feels like my diary is being revealed.”

On the genres in the album:
“From Chicago House in the 1980s, UK's Garage Sound in the 1990-2000, to Indie Pop and Dream Pop in the 2010s..., a diverse sound spectrum and new experiment that is once again breaking and expanding Yerin Baek's world.”

Why Korean music awards are losing steam

The Korean music scene is flooded with annual awards ceremonies ― Golden Disc Awards, Korean Music Awards (KMA), Seoul Music Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), Melon Music Awards (MMA), Soribada Best K-Music Awards and The Fact Music Awards among many others.

Quite a few of them were launched after the country's three major broadcasters KBS, MBC and SBS eliminated their end-of-year music awards in 2006-7 over persistent disputes about fairness. The reason for the growth in the number of events is simple ― organizing music awards ceremonies is highly profitable.

According to industry insiders, all participants perform for free at such events in return for receiving prizes and being "honored." Unlike other types of events, organizers do not have to give them much other than transportation fees in most cases.

Once the stars show up, event hosts can easily attract K-pop fans, who will even pay for the right to vote for their favorite singers in the competition, and sponsors, who are able to capitalize on their attention in the media.

Such an inundation of awards ceremonies, however, has stirred up a myriad of problems.

Spike in COVID-19 cases puts S. Korean music industry on edge

Random cluster infections are breaking out across the country and the South Korean music industry is no exception from the new coronavirus.

In most cases, infections have escalated into bigger cases involving consecutive screening tests, as music programs and events often feature multiple artists and a big production staff.

Earlier this month, Kogyeol and Bit-to of boy group UP10TION tested positive for the infectious virus after Bit-to came into contact with a COVID-19 patient.

While no additional infections were reported within the group, it triggered a spate of screening tests. The MCs and staff of music programs at broadcasters MBC and SBS, as well as other singers who appeared on the program -- NCT, CNBLUE, aespa, AKMU and TREASURE -- also underwent tests in a precautionary measure.
