Exclusive Interview with Segye’s Reporter Choo Youngjun

“Because we had to prepare different stages for each end of the year shows, it didn’t feel like we were really resting. We spent [the end of the year] busily with continuous promotions.”

The five member girl group, Red Velvet, from SM Entertainment received lots of love from their fans last year with ‘Ice Cream Cake’, their official album ‘Dumb Dumb’ and Christmas season song ‘Wish Tree’. The members got to spend the lunar new year holiday individually.

After all the members got to meet their family for the first time in a while and have a joyful time at home, they all returned to the dorms. On the 11th, I got to meet with Red Velvet at SM Entertainment’s headquarters in Cheongdam-dong before they release their next album.

Their members from leader Irene (25), to Seulgi (22), Wendy (22), Joy (20), Yeri (18) all participated in the interview in casual clothing and a bright, welcoming attitude.

First, I asked Seulgi about how she felt winning silver in the archery portion at the Idol Sports Athletics Competition, and she replied, “We went to go practice archery three times, and the hardest thing was pulling on the arrow,” and she laughed.

The members Joy and Irene are both promoting on MBC’s We Got Married and KBS’ Music Bank respectively, and when I asked what the other members are doing, youngest Yeri said, “We sometimes come as guests on shows and are doing our best practicing.”

When asked if they all had rice cake soup for the lunar new year, they all replied yes, but Wendy expressed that she was upset that she was the only one not able to go home.

“I couldn’t go to my parents so I spent time alone healing in the dorms. The members sent me messages throughout, and they came to visit me from time to time so it wasn’t really lonely.”

She explained, “In fifth grade I immigrated to Toronto, Canada, and in my third year of high school I returned to Korea. I haven’t been able to see my parents for over a year now.”

Wendy smiled brightly once more and said, “It was Seulgi’s birthday yesterday!” and all the other members clapped along and appeared to be excited and happy.

“The members all took care of my birthday yesterday. To be honest, as I grow older I tend to not take care of my birthday, and I don’t have much thought about it. I didn’t have much thoughts about it so when I came back to the dorms after hanging out with friends, the members held a surprise party for me so I was really happy.”

Seulgi continued, “All the members were home yesterday, and they suddenly turned off all the lights so I assumed they were going to go to sleep, but then they turned on the lights and did a surprise party. The fans all congratulated me with pictures, drawings, videos, and all sorts of different presents so it was nice,” and she appeared joyful.

“I don’t know how people in England knew about my birthday, but they sent me a birthday wish as well.”

“There’s a picture of me on the internet from when I was young, holding a Pringles bottle. Seeing that, the company photoshopped a picture of me and congratulated me,” she explained.

“I live in Suwon, and I heard that the fans placed a birthday advertisement for me on the buses. I couldn’t see it myself, but I saw it later through pictures.”

“They also donated to an orphanage and donated blood. I don’t think there’s a birthday present bigger than that,” and she appeared to be proud.

Yeri said, “Red Velvet is volunteering by going to orphanages and making kimchi and playing with the kids. Recently, we were appointed as the ambassadors for the RCY (Red Cross Youth), and we finished recording the narration for a video.”

We asked Irene how it felt to MC Music Bank with one of the hottest actors, Park Bogum from Reply 1988, and she said, “I’m two years older. It’s the stage that I’m always on but as I work to introduce the artists and observe the people who work backstage as well as the other artists, I learn a lot. I think it’s an opportunity for me to grow even more.”

When asked about acting, Seulgi said, “I got to participate in a musical for a short time, and I’m attracted to acting, dancing and singing at the same time.” Yeri stated, “I really like Gong Hyojin sunbae-nim. There was a role as a ghost in a drama, and I would follow it a lot and practice. If I get the chance, I would also like to play a vampire role as well.”

The other members agreed and said, “If we want to act we would have to go participate in auditions.”

Members of Red Velvet don’t have too many girl group friends. Because Yeri (18) doesn’t know too many girl group members around her age, she’s close with SM unnies such as SNSD and SNSD-TTS.

Seulgi said, “I’m close with Mamamoo’s Moonbyul unnie but we are off on different times so we can’ meet each other too often. I want to eat good food and have a blast with her when we finally get to hang out. Some of my girl group friends don’t have cell phones so I can’t talk or hang with them. I barely manage to keep contact and stay close with Mamamoo”.

Seulgi said, “We tend to do individual schedules or do activities for self-improvement”.

Wendy said, “In order to improve and achieve my goal as a singer, I go to the practice room by myself to search videos and discuss about what I need to improve on with my teachers.”

Joy said, “I recently watched "Catch Me If You Can”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I always wanted to watch this one.“

"Kang Dongwon is one of my favorite actors. I watched ‘A Violent Prosecutor’ on the initial release day and took a commemoratory selca.”

Seulgi said, “I like to watch videos of other singers singing and dancing. I also like watching movies. I like going to the movies by myself. I find it easier to catch the actors’ charmful acting abilities in movies since movie plots are faster than those in dramas.”

When asked if there are any fans who recognize them on the streets, Seulgi replied, “I go to the theater near our dorm. I usually go during the AM hours and wear my cap.”

Wendy said, “I usually practice singing by watching videos. There are evident stylistic and emotional differences between foreign artists and Korean artists. Being Korean artists, we learn more by watching Korean singer sunbaes.”

Yeri said, “I watch Ariana Grande videos to cheer myself up when I’m down and tired. I was never able to relate when people said they get energy from their favorite singers but I do now. She added, "I started training since I was in 5th grade. I used to squat down in the corner of the practice room and watch performance videos.”

When asked what they do often when they’re off stage, Yeri replied, “We’re always together. We love having random dance parties when someone turns up the music loudly”

Wendy said, “We’re always together from the morning till bedtime. Even while we are relaxing and doing our own thing, when someone mentions some topic, we’d all gather up and chat away. It really does feel like family.” Yeri said, “I got in trouble by my mom over the Lunar New Year break because I took off my clothes and left it on the floor like I a snake shedding.”

When asked about the possible date for their upcoming album, Yeri replied, “We need to practice more. There isn’t a set date but we’re recording on the set schedule. I think we’ll know when everything is finalized”

In the contract signed between CJ E&M and entertainment agencies for the Mnet trainee survival show “Produce 101,” strict terms are outlined that protect CJ E&M and the show from spoilers and legal action.

Local news source Ilgan Sports obtained a copy of the contract between CJ E&M, the company that owns Mnet, and the entertainment agencies sending their trainees to the Mnet show “Produce 101.” The contract states that agencies and the third party (i.e. the trainee) cannot take legal action (criminal or civil) that seeks to hold CJ E&M liable for any negative reaction from audiences and netizens. This protects the company from blame caused by “Devil’s editing,” for example, which has been a source of controversy for some Mnet shows like “Superstar K” when audiences and contestants claim that the producers are editing the show in an unfavorable way.

The contract also prohibits the trainee and related family and friends, and the agency to reveal any information about the show on social media networks or media outlets, as well as record or appear on shows on any other networks or media outlets. The contract can be terminated by CJ E&M if this term is violated.

Financially, the trainee gets no pay for appearing on the show, and any profit made from music releases will be shared 50-50 between CJ E&M and the agency. The entertainment agency also shares in the cost of producing the music releases.

Also appearing in the contract is CJ E&M’s “incubating system.” At the end of the show, whoever gets selected as the final member has to be part of the “incubating system” for 10 months, during which CJ E&M manages/trains the contestant.

An affiliate of “Produce 101″ emphasized in a interview with Osen and TVReport that the terms outlined in the contract are legally common and are there to protect copyright and prevent leaks. The “incubating system” means that the final 11 trainees will debut through Mnet and promote together for about ten months. As for the no pay, this is said to be typical of competition/audition programs which contestants volunteer to be a part of.

“Produce 101″ is a large-scale survival show produced by Mnet with 101 trainees from 46 entertainment agencies competing to become part of a project girl group.

Naver:

1. [+754, -28] Mnet always plays so dirty...

2. [+731, -116] No wonder a few trainees were maliciously edited while JellyFish trainees, who are under the CJ branch, are shown as angels ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ for example, JellyFish trainee Kim Se Jung benefited the most out of this, no?

3. [+541, -13] Of course ㅋㅋ Mnet is infamous for malicious edits from 'Superstar K' to 'SMTM' and 'Unpretty Rap Star', these contracts don't even surprise me

4. [+99, -6] It honestly says a lot more about the producers for editing things in the certain way that they do. They know that this could negatively impact a kid's future and yet they edit her clips with malicious intent. JYP needs to take Somi out of the show, they're just going to ruin her image.

5. [+107, -9] Kim Se Jung is perfect in all areas of skills, character, and looks. I genuinely support her debut. However, instead of letting her shine on her own, Mnet purposely edits clips to make it look like she's a rival with Jun Somi, adding clips of Somi looking upset at Kim Se Jung. Mnet is trash. You can tell that they're biased towards trainees from companies under their network branch. What're they doing to these kids with dreams ㅡㅡ

6. [+68, -3] Wow, this is bad... especially the part about trainees not getting paid... Is Mnet saying they should be grateful for even getting a chance to be on TV??????? Talk about power tripping..

7. [+62, -3] The trainees are paid $0 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I see a lot of red flags being raised by broadcast organizations and child labor agencies ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Nate:

1. [+126, -3] Are Mnet thugs???

2. [+120, -3] This is pretty much a slave contract...

3. [+105, -3] Those Mnet trash power tripping again

4. [+26, -2] Sad that these trainees had to sign this contract knowing the terms because they had no other choice...

5. [+15, -0] Power tripping

Daum:

1. [+97, -2] That's scary, I wouldn't sign it but I guess they had to for that public screentime

2. [+75, -3] The industry is just that competitive... tsk tsk tsk

3. [+64, -1] If Mnet is paying them $0, then does that mean their agency is paying them instead??? Because that's problematic if no one is paying them at all

4. [+16, -0] Slave contract...

There are people on twitter asking Winner to leave YG/ put up or shut up for this comment, and I'm just baffled by their reactions. What do you think Omona?

I'm not bothering with the links to the responses on twitter. Y'all know the usual suspects- just look up Seunghoon there or go directly to their accounts- you should find all the ridiculousness there.

Other sidenote: Winner is finally standing up for themselves and demanding better promotions, and I am proud of them.

After an extraordinarily long promotion period for their last song Aalow Aalow, Laboum has announced their plan to comeback in April, using Makestar.co to crowdfund their next production.

The girls met their goal in less than 4 hours after the project opened on February 15th.

Laboum follows in the steps of Stellar who also used Makestar to crowdfund their mini album.

Some of the rewards:
- $165.30: a 'mini display figure' with all the members
- $247.90: invitation to the MV set + a photo session with the members on set
- $826.20: you get a personal fan meeting with the girls + a dinner with them (10 people have already bought this and it is now sold out!)

Makestar, writeup by me

omona what do you think of idols crowdfunding their comebacks?
