EDITORIAL: 2011 in Kpop debuts

With new groups and solo artists rising up from everywhere during the past year, I didn't think it would be shocking to reveal that I counted a little over 130 different debuts this year, including new groups, solo artists, solo debuts from group members, and many more.

This editorial is set to give you a walk-through to this year's debuts, and see whichever artists you started following or have completely overlooked.

While pop group and artist debuts are easy to spot, new rock bands or underground hiphop artists might start out without having a big release. Which means that this list, however, isn't fail-proof. Although many debuts are gathered here, a few might have slipped from our radars.

Rainbow’s Woo Ri uploaded some “noisy” pictures of Invincible Youth 2.

On January 6, Woo Ri tweeted some pictures with the comment “We are the Invincible Youth! We always get noisy when we get together.”

Each member of Invincible Youth 2 is posing with individuality and a cute look in friendly atmosphere.

Particularly, their bright smile delivers the fun, noisy atmosphere to the fans, and it makes the fans smile at them.

Park Bom Fans present a soldier from the “Infinity Challenge Bonamana Event” a gift!

The warm hearts of 2NE1 Park Bom’s fans have been heating up the internet recently.

On the morning of the 8th on an online community, a post titled “After appearing on Infinity Challenge for 5 seconds, I was thanked by the fans of an idol” made its way out to seek attention. This post consisted of screencaps from this past October’s MBC ‘Infinity Challenge - Bonamana Season 3’ concert and a message from Park Bom’s fans.

The picture (screencap) was of the day the Infinity Challenge members went to a military base camp in Suwon to hold their annual concert. At the time, many soldiers were anticipating and looking forward to seeing Park Bom come out to feature for Park Myungsoo’s “I Had An Affair” performance, sending out their loud cheers and applaud.

But on this day’s broadcast, when Park Bom’s appearance was replaced by Kim Shinyoung, the soldiers were greatly disappointed. As Park Bom had not come out to feature for this performance, one soldier’s frank and candid expressions were caught on camera. As seen in the screencaps shown, his face of grand excitement slowly turns into a face of utter disappointment as he sees that Park Bom had been replaced.

As a way of consoling this soldier, Park Bom fans have asked around looking for a way to find out who exactly this soldier was. And having finally found his name and way to reach him, the fans were able to send him handwarmers and heatpads as a gift.

The uploader of this post also added, “As a way of thanking this soldier for having anticipated Park Bom’s appearance so much, Park Bom’s fans ‘The Bom’ sent him hand warmers and heatpads to show them their appreciation” and that “we also want to thank the Suwon Base team and staff for taking a validation picture to show that he got the gifts safely.”

Netizens who found out about this news were asking things such as, “I wonder how ‘The Bom’ fanclub even found his information?” and “The fans and that soldier are truly awesome”.

Chinese man throws firebombs at Japanese Embassy

A Chinese man, who claimed his grandmother was a “comfort woman” forced into sexual slavery by Japan’s military, hurled four Molotov cocktails at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul early Sunday morning. The 36-year-old Lui, was apprehended at the scene after throwing the firebombs over the wall of the embassy at 8:18 a.m., according to Jongno Police Station.

On January 7th, Super Junior‘s Donghae commented on a recent The Top Tens poll that asked ‘Singers You’d Like to Perform at the 2012 London Olympics’.  The Top Tens is a collection of visitor created top ten lists categorized by list type and made available for creators to edit and add to as they see fit.

After seeing that Super Junior took the #1 spot beating out top acts like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, Donghae proudly wrote, “My my my….I guess we’ll have to go to London^^”.

K-Pop fans further voted Big Bang at #2 and SHINee at #6, showing the commitment of hallyu wave fans in promoting their favorite artists.  Other Korean artist on the list include: Girls’ Generation at #11,2NE1 at #32 (and again at #123), KARA at #114, JYJ at #123, TVXQ at #136, Wonder Girls at #142,T-ARA at #154, B2st at #155, 4Minute at 191, f(x) at 192, Hang Geng at #195, B1A4 #215, A Pink#310, Kim Hyun Joong #331, 2PM #332, and INFINITE at #345.

Kim's eldest son dishes dirt in upcoming book

Kim Jong Nam, the late Kim Jong Il's eldest son, provides his own frank account of North Korea's "Dear Leader" in a book that will hit stores Jan. 20, including his reluctance to let any of his sons take power, an editor at publisher Bungei Shunju Co. said.

The book by Yoji Gomi, a senior staff writer for the Tokyo Shimbun daily, is based on his extensive interviews with Kim Jong Nam and email exchanges between them, the editor said Friday. In an email in January after Kim Jong Il's funeral Dec. 28, Kim Jong Nam voiced his opposition to the hereditary succession system that led to his younger brother, Kim Jong Un, being appointed North Korea's new leader.

Kim Jong Nam is also quoted by Gomi as saying that the existing power group will continue to hold the reins of power and plans to use the new, young leader as a symbol of North Korea.

Kim Jong Nam also said Kim Jong Il had remarked he wouldn't let any of his sons take power.

Gomi met Kim Jong Nam at a chance meeting at Beijing Capital International Airport in 2004. Gomi interviewed him in Macao and Beijing last year for around seven hours.

Kim Jong Nam recently asked Gomi to delay the book's publication, fearing it would displease Pyongyang, the Bungei Shunju editor said. But the publishing firm decided to release it anyway because it is "meaningful to deliver Kim Jong Nam's real voice at a time when North Korea is drawing global attention," the editor said.

Jaejoong's photos bring laughter to netizens

On January 7th, Jaejoong posted on Twitter, "If you want to get younger, you should take lots of selcas," along with a photo of himself sticking out his tongue and slightly biting it.

Later, he also posted, "I uploaded this because it's very funny. I hope that I can keep posting photos like this in the future," along with a different photo. This photo revealed Jaejoong with marker drawings on his face while Park Yoochun is seen in the background holding a marker and with a chic look on his face. Junsu's face was slightly blurred out but the fact that Yoochun was trying to cover his smile brought attention to him.

Songs and results from Infinity Challenge's "I Am Kind of a Singer"

On the episode aired on January 7th, Infinity Challenge members sang renditions of each others’ songs in a competition called ‘I Am a Singer in My Own Way’, their spoof off MBC’s popular show ‘I Am a Singer‘.

Jung Jun Ha started the show by moving the audience with an emotional performance of HaHa‘s “Story of a Little Kid“. Changing the title and lyrics to “Tall Old Bachelor“, Jung Jun Ha truthfully sang about being grateful to his love and even teared up at the end of the song. Netizens praised his heart-felt performance and awarded him with first place.

Tiffany shares a kiss scene with Jungmo

On January 8th, a picture of a lip-locked Tiffany and Jungmo was posted on an online community, under the title, "Photo of Tiffany's kiss scene in her musical."

The photo shows a scene from the musical "Fame." Long-haired Tiffany is in the midst of a kiss with golden-haired Jungmo. They play Carmen Diaz and Schlomo Metzenbaum respectively, the former a dancer and the latter a classical violinist.
