Seventy South Korean soldiers and military officers were found belatedly yesterday to have had memberships in a pro-Pyongyang Web site that Seoul authorities closed down last year.

Seven or eight of them are under investigation by military prosecutors for leaving remarks on the Web site, the Ministry of National Defense said.

“The Web site called ‘Cyber Command for National Defense’ was found out by the military prosecutors to have 70 military personnel including 26 officers as its members,” said ministry official.

The official said seven or eight of them, all low-ranked officers and soldiers, were found to have posted replies on the ‘allegiance pledge corner’ on the Web site and are under intensive investigation, focused on the nature of the remarks. The creator of the Web site, identified by his surname Hwang, 43, was given a suspended jail term in an appeals court in June last year for violating the national security law with the case currently pending in the Supreme Court.

The country’s national security law bans its citizens from making remarks praising North Korea in public places and in online spaces. The 1950-53 Korean War ended in ceasefire, not in peace treaty, leaving two Koreas still at war against each other.

According to military sources, the 70 military personnel are 26 officers - including one colonel, five lieutenant colonels and five majors - nine master sergeants and 35 rank-and-file soldiers.

The colonel registered on the Web site told military prosecutors that he joined as a member to study the pro-North activists’ logic and to develop logic to counter them, military sources said. One lieutenant colonel was known to have said that he had his identity stolen.

Some local papers reported that those under investigation have pledged allegiance to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his son and heir-apparent Kim Jong-un, a claim that the ministry refused to confirm. “We are still investigating whether they are in violation of the national security law,” a military official said.

As Daesung’s car accident continues to be investigated, the taxi driver that was rear-ended by the Big Bang star revealed that Daesung had in fact been driving at 60km/h. A police statement previously asserted that Daesung was driving at 80km/h, but YG Entertainment has spoken out and argued that there are many different factors to this incident, and that it should be regarded as a complex case.

Shinhwa's Eric (Real name Mun Chong Hyeok) will be starring in the KBS drama Myeongwol the Spy.

Eric, who finished his military service as a public service officer last October, will be coming back with a drama for the first time in 3 years since his last piece, Strongest Chilwoo.

Near the end of last year, Eric agreed to star in Poseidon, a drama based on happenings with the Maritime Police. However, Poseidon was rejected for a time slot due to problems with funding. On the 31st, an official stated that with much consideration, Eric decided to star in the new KBS 2TV Monday-Tuesday mini series Myeongwol The Spy.

Myeongwol The Spy is a drama about the events surrounding a meeting between North Korean woman spy Han Myeongwol and a Hallyu star from South Korea. Coincidentally, Eric, who is a Hallyu star in Japan, China, etc., will be appearing as a Hallyu star in the drama.

Brown Eyed Girls delays comeback once again

The Brown Eyed Girls are definitely perfectionists, and no costs are being spared for their highly-anticipated comeback this summer. Earlier, we reported that they trashed an entire 15-track album because it didn’t live up to their expectations. Well, to this date, the girls have revealed that they’ve trashed three albums’ worth of recordings now.

At least there will be a release with more than four tracks *coughGaheecough* )

In the seemingly destitute lands of North Korea, Southeast Asian women have been involved in prostitution in deluxe hotel clubs in Pyongyang, the Seoul-based shortwave Open Radio for North Korea reported Saturday.

The broadcaster said that foreign women, especially those from Southeast Asian countries, are employed, instead of local women, to host and entertain the guests at basement bars of hotels.

“There are no officially registered adult entertainment establishments in North Korea. However, there are private establishments from luxury hotels with legal approval from the government,” an unnamed official of the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as telling the radio station. Women from China, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos along with North Korean women have been residing in these establishments, said the official.
