Korean media outlet Donga Ilbo, partnered with web magazine Idology and the research company M Brain, recently conducted a survey among 2000 ordinary citizens and 30 pop music experts about the best K-pop idol groups and songs in the past 20 years.

The 2000 citizens were made up of 200 men and 200 women from each age group from the 10s to the 50s.

The top three male idols were BIGBANG at 44.0 percent, H.O.T at 28.8 percent, and g.o.d at 18.9 percent. The other groups on the list were, in order: TVXQ, Shinhwa, Super Junior, EXO, Sechs Kies, BEAST, BTS, SHINee, 2PM, CNBLUE, INFINITE, and FTISLAND.

The top three female idols were Girls’ Generation, at 55.7 percent, Fin.K.L at 18.7 percent, and S.E.S at 17.8 percent. The other groups on the list were, in order: Wonder Girls, BoA, IU, 2NE1, TWICE, SISTAR, GFRIEND, A Pink, AOA, KARA, 4Minute, and f(x).

The top three songs sung by male idols were “Lies” by BIGBANG (40.2 percent), “Candy” by H.O.T (26.5 percent), and “Lies” by g.o.d (22.8 percent). The other songs on the list were, in order: “Sorry Sorry” (Super Junior), “Growl” (EXO), “Couple” (Sechs Kies), “Rising Sun” (TVXQ), “Fiction” (BEAST), “Ring Ding Dong” (SHINee), “Be Mine” (INFINITE), “Heartbeat” (2PM), “It’s Raining” (Rain), “Run” (BTS), and “Adore U” (SEVENTEEN).

The top three songs sung by female idols were “Gee” by Girls’ Generation (34.2 percent), “Tell Me” by Wonder Girls (30.9 percent), and “Good Day” by IU (16.5 percent). The other songs on the list were, in order: “No. 1” (BoA), “10 Minutes” (Lee Hyori), “Forever Love” (Fin.K.L), “I’m Your Girl” (S.E.S), “Cheer Up” (TWICE), “I Am the Best” (2NE1), “Up and Down” (EXID), “Rough” (GFRIEND), “Bad Girl Good Girl” (miss A), “Mister” (KARA), and “Roly Poly” (T-ara).

The experts picked BIGBANG, TVXQ and H.O.T (tied), and SHINee as their top three male idols, and Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls, and 2NE1 for the female idols. As for songs sung by male idols, they chose “Lies” (BIGBANG), “Candy” (H.O.T) and “Growl” (EXO), and as for songs sung by female idols, they chose “Gee” (Girls’ Generation), “Tell Me” (Wonder Girls), and “I’m Your Girl” (S.E.S).

Many citizens in their 30s chose H.O.T and those of that age and older preferred g.o.d’s music, while the 10s and 20s were disposed to vote towards EXO, BIGBANG, and Super Junior. The experts noted that 2007 and 2008 were important years in the history of idol music, with the release of BIGBANG’s “Lies” and Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me” as well as the debuts of Girls’ Generation and SHINee.

There were also some differences between genders, with women likely to choose “Tell Me” by the Wonder Girls and SISTAR as a group while men leaned towards “Gee” and TWICE. “10 Minutes” and “Bad Girl Good Girl” also showed high preference among women rather than men.

It looks to me like it got 5 votes out of the 400? There's such a huge drop-off after 6th place...

the results seem a bit odd lol.

the TOP 7 of each list seem pretty obvious, esp since we're going by Korean opinion across a wide age group.

the rest of the rankings, i personally would shuffle a little bit but I understand why they were voted there.

Well thats'a weird list, in some moments is so on point but then suddenly BTS or Seventeen pops up out of nowhere... as much as i like them they just dont belong there (yet) lol

They got a very low % of votes compared to the big, iconic groups though, which must have come from the youngest age categories.

Happy to see Run getting the recognition it deserves. Imo it's their best song up to now. I will ignore all the comments that will be said about BTS being on this list tho. lol Wanted to add that it's not like they got a ton of votes I mean they got only one vote from an expert.

Growl really wasn't all that.

i, like, fifth that some of the lists are a bit odd to me. there's some things that i would move around like: as much as i love cheer up, rough and up and down, i'd push up bad girl good girl, mister and roly poly higher. (or at least the first two.)

the ~best artists by the public ..., i'm assuming that it's probably based around recent hype and the results would vary if, like, one of the groups lower on the list were promoting right now / had more recently. like a pink, shinee, and infinite would be higher if this had been done after their comebacks this month.

bigbang and snsd pretty much are consistent at being at the top. and they have multiple songs in the list voten on by experts.

i can't believe that there's no solo male artist that's had enough impact to be in this list other than rain. at least in the female category there's boa, hyori, hyuna and iu.

really suprised at super junior's place in all the categories especially concerning the public.

ikon and winner not even registering here should give yge a wake up call on how to better promote their groups.

twice is truly on their way to becoming one of the top girl groups.

the public can't deny roly poly's impact.

also interesting to note the difference in the song chosen by the experts and the public. the experts chose sherlock, lucifer and dream girl for shinee while the public chose ring ding dong.

IMO kim jong kook should be there as another solo male artist, even if his music wasn't popular internationally, he won 3 Daesangs in 2005 from all major TV stations, and his songs were really popular, not only with his ballads like han namja but the dancing classic of all times that it was Sarang Surowo lmao, he was really influencial (and still is as an entertainer not as much as a musician) Idk why he wasn't considered in this.... maybe because he's more of a balladist in the public eyes, but what abut sarang surowo?????? lmao when I got into kpop that was the IT song!!! meybe they don't see him as a musician anymore but more as a variety entertainer :/

sorry for the long testament

this...there's a lot of stuff I'm surprised not to see. I remember a lot of iconic ballad songs I would expect to kinda sweep, but I think maybe this is more smash idol hits?

RIGHT?!! KJK started his career in Turbo a pop/idol group like Lee Hyori, yes he became more of a balladist when he went solo, but still had iconic pop jams I remember when I got into kpop so many people danced/parodied sarang surowo! it was a classic! and he's still very relevant as an entertainer, I can't undesrtand why he isn't there

“Rising Sun” (TVXQ) WHAT??? Rising sun???? out of all of their songs???? "he experts noted that 2007 and 2008 were important years in the history of idol music" the years I got into kpop, so this seems right lol
I'm so happy to see WG are still on top their influence in their peak years was sooooo big my girls :')

From: [identity profile] des-akazim.livejournal.com
idk I kinda get rising sun...like I remember the moment that came out was such a game changer for tvxq, bc one second they were this cute young acapella group making fun pop (save for tri-angle) and the next moment they were MASSIVELY more influential and slid very quickly into these huge theatrical drama songs. It was so memorable for me hahahah

so awesome to see some of the older groups like WG and even older H.O.T and sechskies bc honestly they were a big part of my early kpop interests hahaha I'm kinda surprised this list skews a little new.
