I think it was definitely the emphasis on behind the scenes/online content. Most if not all kpop groups have crazy dorky personalities within them, but not all of them were as accessible online to fans as BTS were.
So you mean like the Bangtan bombs? Other groups like EXO (who are apparently bigger in Asia?) don't have them? And of course it's helped that they appear to have good personalities and get on with each other. I much prefer IKON's music, but after seeing some of their background stuff, ugh, I hate myself for liking their music
