Amid the roaring K-pop boom, singer Lim Young-woong has proven the power of trot music, with his "My Starry Love" music video becoming the most popular music video on YouTube in Korea this year.

Lim's clip, which was released on March 9, has exceeded 43 million views as of Thursday. Although the "Butter" music video by K-pop juggernaut BTS has racked up more than 630 million hits in total, it ranked second, presumably because most of its clicks have come from users outside Korea.

"The music video of 'My Starry Love' ― which was composed by veteran trot singer Seol Woon-do ― has been basking in persistent popularity since its release," YouTube said in a statement Thursday.

With the rising popularity of Korean dramas around the world, salaries paid to actors and actresses have also risen dramatically. The top actresses appearing in Korean dramas are now paid over 200 million won ($170,000) per episode.

According to the Hankook Ilbo, sister paper of The Korea Times, Song Hye-kyo and Jun Ji-hyun, popular actresses whose dramas are currently on air, are each making over 200 million won per episode. Song is currently playing the lead in SBS's melodrama, "Now We Are Breaking Up," while Jun is starring as a mountain ranger in tvN's mystery series, "Jirisan."

While the salaries of the actors and actresses are not made public in most cases, it was reported that Song was paid over 100 million won per episode in tvN's "Encounter," which aired in 2018. The actress was already among the most sought-after stars when she enjoyed surging international popularity with "Descendants of the Sun," one of the most talked about Korean dramas of all time.

While COVID-19 has dealt a blow to almost every industry worldwide, bringing chaos and economic recession, the personal luxury goods market in Korea has shown an unusual pattern.

Unfazed by the pandemic, it has set itself apart from the general economic slump with steady growth.

According to the global research firm, Euromonitor International, the country's personal luxury goods market has managed to weather the pandemic-caused economic crisis, with its value reaching $12.5 billion in 2020, showing little change from the previous year's $12.52 billion. The figure was $12.24 billion in 2018.

This situation is in stark contrast to the fact that the global personal luxury goods market value suffered a 23-percent drop during the same period ― from $318.6 billion in 2019 to $246 billion in 2020 ― which saw Korea taking up an even greater portion of the market.

Buoyed by these booming luxury goods sales, Korea's online channels for luxury brand shopping have also seen a boost, with new platforms emerging and existing ones stepping up their game in the heated competition.
