Mamamoo’s Melting brings a retro soul feel back to the K-pop world, heralding the Korean quartet's rise to the top ranks of the girl group hunger games. Shunning the over-the-top production values associated with a lot of the music coming out of South Korea, Mamamoo’s first LP brings its listeners back in time -- with a modern tweak.
The girl group made it big last year with retro-inspired dance songs like "Um Oh Ah Yeah," "Mr. Ambiguous," and "Piano Man" garnering the attention of South Korean audiences. Following the release of Melting at the end of Feb., these women are back in brass with a light-hearted vengeance to show the world that K-pop isn’t all about the saccharine and the sexy.

Here’s a novel stat: South Korea accounts for about 20% of the world market for men’s cosmetics. This means annual sales of more than $1 billion courtesy of a mere 25 million men, and this figure will inflate by 50% over the next five years. On a per capita level, Korean men have everyone beat. Why? Because “appearance is power” and “youth equals ability.”
We’re not just talking skin lotions or aftershave here. Korean urbanites are also smitten with BB Cream, brow pencils and guyliner. Girlfriends and spouses not only shop cosmetics for their male partners in Seoul, but also casually apply lipstick to their faces in public without anyone sharpening the proverbial pitchforks.
That said, shouldn’t gender-bending be a complete no-no in the deeply Confucian culture of Korea? Also, befitting its two years of mandatory military service for young men, shouldn’t Korea’s benchmark for masculine beauty be the hardy, rugged type? Like Clark Gable? Even Bruce Lee? While that was once true, South Koreans now prize the puckish, Peter Pan look over Gerard Butler-esque alpha male chic.

BIGBANG member T.O.P has apologized after footage spread online of him discarding a cigarette butt out of the window of a car in front of fans in China.
While in China for an event recently, the car that T.O.P was riding in came to a stop as it was surrounded by passionate fans who were following on motorcycles and in taxis, vans, and cars. It was then that he was captured by a fan on camera as he rolled down his window and dropped a cigarette butt out of the window. After fans yelled out to him in Korean, T.O.P then made a small heart with his fingers.
On March 14, T.O.P stated, “I sincerely apologize for disappointing my fans. I am very embarrassed.” He adds, “When I’m smoking in a car or somewhere else, I throw the butts out in an ashtray, but I made a huge mistake as I was riding in someone else’s car. Anyway, I have no excuse.”
It has been reported that T.O.P was riding in a car provided by the event organizer at the time.

Former Girls’ Generation member Jessica is gearing up for her official solo debut.
On March 14, her representative confirmed that they have finished filming the music video for her upcoming song. This comes as a response to previous reports about Jessica being spotted at a filming location in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province on March 11.
But it appears that fans will have to wait a little longer before they can actually watch the video. “We have yet to set any dates regarding Jessica’s comeback. We are still in the process of recording music. The music video was shot in advance to firmly kick off her comeback preparations.”
While it was reported last month that Jessica has finished recording songs on her new album, this latest statement suggests that they have yet to put finishing touches on the release.
Meanwhile, Jessica recently signed with Tyler Kwon’s Coridel Entertainmentto relaunch her Korean activities.

Singer Lee Hi, who recently made a comeback, revealed the advantages and disadvantages of her agency, YG Entertainment.
She started by saying that, “YG itself is a very large company and I think that my seniors have already set a global foundation for us juniors. I believe it’s thanks to them that I have an environment where I can work comfortably. I hope that I can receive help (from YG) to get firmly settled in, in terms of my music.”
To the participants of SBS‘s “K-Pop Star” who want to join YG, Lee Hi said, “The boss (Yang Hyun Suk) is always ambitious and I think he enjoys new things. It has been reported that BTOB member, Yook Sungjae is considering appearing in “Moonlight Drawn by Clouds.”
His agency, Cube Entertainment, revealed on March 14 that, “It is true that Yook Sungjae received a casting call for KBS2‘s new Monday-Tuesday drama, ‘Moonlight Drawn by Clouds.’ Nothing has been confirmed as of this time, but it is one of the projects that are being considered.”
