The growing popularity of K-pop bands in Germany indicates that the Korean Wave may have finally made its way to Western Europe.

According to the VIVA Online Clip Charts, girl group 2NE1's recently released song "I Am the Best" ranked top of the charts this week. This was followed by "Mona Lisa," by boy band MBLAQ, and Beast's "Breath." Songs by 2PM, Super Junior-M and Big Bang also made their way into the top 100.

The VIVA chart is compiled by German music TV channel VIVA based on the number of downloads and music video hits the songs receive online. The station is equivalent in clout to MTV in the U.S., and is in fact now under the management of MTV following a recent acquisition and merger.

VIVA News reported on Wednesday that K-pop, a new force to be reckoned with in the mainstream music industry, has recently moved beyond Asia and into Europe. It said this is similar to what happened in the 1990s with Japanese music, when J-Pop became hugely popular around the world.
One of the key to K-pop's success, it said, is the attractive looks of its singers, many of whom have undergone cosmetic surgery.

"K-pop idol groups such as Beast, 2NE1, TVXQ, MBLAQ, Super Junior and Big Bang were modeled after boy bands and girl groups in the West," it reported. "Korean management agencies, notably SM Entertainment, discover young talents and nurture them into becoming highly successful groups. Many Korean groups are immensely popular in Japan, so they sometimes sing in Japanese."

Meanwhile, JYJ, another local boy band, has expressed its wish to hold a concert in Germany at either the end of October or in early November, the Korean Embassy in Berlin said.

"JYP Entertainment, which manages Wonder Girls and 2PM, is also considering holding concerts in Germany," it added.

SNSD’s Hyoyeon has been getting a lot of attention for her gorgeous looks at the “2011 GIRLS’ GENERATION TOUR.” At the press conference prior to the concert in Seoul, Hyoyeon showed up in a white lacey minidress, lovely blonde hair, and soft makeup. In the past, she was more known for being the cute and spunky member of SNSD. However, fans began commenting about how much she matured as a lady. Many netizens also began pointing out that Hyoyeon resembled both Song Hye Gyo and 2NE1’s Sandara Park in the photos.

Netizens commented, “Hyoyeon’s finally getting recognition for her beauty,” “She became so pretty! I hardly recognized her!” “She looks similar to Yuri,” “She’s Song Hye Gyo’s doppelganger,” and “She’s a goddess!”

It has been reported that EXILE’s former vocalist SHUN (Kiyokiba Shunsuke) has teamed up with Shin Hye Sung from Korean boy band Shinhwa and will be releasing their collaborative debut single on October 5th under the name, ‘Shun Hye Sung x Kiyokiba Shunsuke‘.

The collaborative efforts began when Hye Sung covered EXILE’s ballad, “Tada… Aitakute“, on his solo album, which is slated for release in Japan on August 31st. Kiyokiba wrote the lyrics to this song, and a year ago, Hye Sung requested to collaborate together for a new song.

The song is titled, “I Believe“. Hye Sung’s husky voice and Kiyokiba’s powerful vocals overlap each other as they sing, “I Believe. Kanashimi wa… ima futari de wakeaeba ii.” Although it is a love song, the duo kept Japan’s national crisis from the Tohoku Earthquake in mind.

For a Sankei Sports’ interview, Hye Sung commented, “I want to build a long and good relationship hereafter,” and Shimizu also said, “It was an honor to be asked to write the lyrics. I expressed the strength and hope for living.

In October, the duo is scheduled to hold a live in Tokyo and Osaka, and next spring, they will resume their activities.

Does Hye Sung knows how lucky he is to be able to collaborate with SHUN? EXILE's vocalists (SHUN, Atsushi, Takahiro) are certainly few of the best singers among pop idols these days, and being able to sing alongside with them, Hye Sung is so lucky

Girl group 4minute's youngest member Kwon Sohyun proved herself as a 'natural beauty'.

Kwon Sohyun uploaded a photo on 27th July on her Twitter with a caption, "Haha this is when I'm young. I'm looking at the photo after a long time, it's fresh."

We can see her image when she was an elementary school student with starry eyes in two braids. If we compare the photo with her current look, we can see that there's no change. She showed off her 'natural beauty' look confidently.

Netizens showed their responses, "It's really cute", "Wow it's the same", "Your pose is also cute~".

Meanwhile, Kwon Sohyun debuted with a group called "Orange" before 4minute. "Orange" debuted in 2005 with 3 elementary school students as their members. They did various activities as children.

Another boy group may be joining the ranks of K-pop stars as soon as September. This new 5-member group, which has had vocal training from singer Hwanhee, will be called "Hwanhee Boys" until they decide on a team name. H-Entercom, Hwanhee's agency, also revealed that the solo artist personally worked on and produced the group's debut album.

Hwanhee revealed one of the group's members through his Twitter account a little while ago, saying that he featured in the singer's track "Love Love Love" as a rapper and has been working as a back-up dancer for him as well.

Last year, talented R&B singer Boni made her debut with two EP albums titled “Nu One” and “1990“. She has since risen as an ‘R&B muse’ amongst music fans and critics, and many have waited for her return to the scene. She’s finally made a comeback with a new digital single named “It Hurts“.

Produced by singer-songwriter 40, the title track is a medium-tempo break up song that starts off slow but builds up into an explosive display of her vocals.

Boni stated, “Through this single, I hope to begin telling my story. I would like to dedicate this song to those who have experienced the bitterness of love to the point where it felt as if their bodies would crumble from the pain.”

Music critics praised, “She’s one of the few vocalists in Korea that truly know how to sing R&B properly.”

N-Train to come back with a mini album in October?

Rumor has it that rookie boy group N-Train will be making a comeback within a few months with a new mini album. The group released their first single "One Last Cry" at the end of May and wrapped up their debut promotions a few weeks ago.

The group intended to make a comeback earlier than October, but it has been said that their label will be debuting girl group Viva Girls' before the boy group's new release. Viva Girls' was created after Media Line decided to disband rookie group VNT. Previous VNT member Yumi will be part of the line-up. Other members haven't been revealed though girl trainees have been seen on multiple N-Train and VNT pictures.

S.M. Entertainment chief suggests using advertising to enable free downloads

Lee Soo-man, chairman of S.M. Entertainment, said Wednesday although K-pop is increasingly popular around the world, it needs a strong boost in the local market first, to further advance to the next level.

The local music market needs a new digital music distribution platform ― an iTunes-like one or an entirely different one ― not only to allow purchasing digital music and globally sharing music for free but to give profits to songwriters from corporate marketing and advertisement, he said.

Lee Soo-man (left), chairman of S.M. Entertainment, talks with Culture Minister Choung Byoung-gug on K-pop in Choung’s office in Seoul on Wednesday, after receiving a plaque of thanks from the ministry for promoting the Korean Wave through K-pop.
