In a recent interview ahead of his long-awaited comeback, artist PSY talked about BTS’s international reach and recognition.

He said, “I saw that BTS is very famous overseas. I’m very proud of them and think they are very worthy of that attention.”

As someone who has also experienced a great deal of unexpected fame overseas, PSY said, “I’m a very unique example of success and so is BTS. In a way, it seems like the artists that people don’t expect these kinds of results from are the ones who experience that sort of unprecedented success.”

The artist complimented the group and said, “I remember seeing [BTS] at music programs a few times at the time of their debut. Seeing them work so hard made me proud. I think BTS will continue to grow into an even more recognized group moving forward.”

Finally, PSY shared some advice for BTS and said, “I want to tell them, that regardless of how long they promote overseas, to not feel burdened. They’ve already established that they are artists worthy of recognition in Asia.”

Meanwhile, PSY’s eighth album “4X2=8” will drop at 6 p.m. KST tonight.

idk if success is the right word because judging from the youtube comments and feedback, Psy was not exactly admired by westerners, more of a mockery and tokenization of the "those crazy asians" stereotype. Quite frankly, I don't think he was taken seriously as an artist but more of an anomaly to be gawked at. That's certainly not the kind of "success" I will wish on any Asian artist, especially BTS

psy isn't taken seriously as an ~artist~ in the west but success is absolutely the right word for what happened with gangnam style, and i'm sure that this popularity in foreign countries (whether or not they were laughing at him or with him) made him even more successful in korea. as psy said what happened with him was unique and bts are on their own very different path as well

"it seems like the artists that people don’t expect these kinds of results from are the ones who experience that sort of unprecedented success."

I guess that's why so many people are rooting for them/are excited they'll be at the bbmas. Like yeah it's an awards show the general public probably doesn't care about/lacks prestige but to be invited and getting all the positive press they did with their tour without actively trying to break into the American market is pretty cool.

I'm so happy for the boys (as in, I'm cautiously optimistic) even though the award isn't music related and may not seem important to many, it's not like they could have been nominated in any other categories (or any other K-pop artists lbr), the BBMAs are about charts performances first and foremost and the only chart BTS slays is the social one.

Also, BBMAs was watched by almost 10M people last year and will be live streamed online for the first time ever this year, it's more exposure than BTS have gotten for their whole career, I don't think it's as meaningless as ppl make it out to be. So hopefully they gain some fans, meet people they admire and it gives them some relevance in SK.

I have to say tho, PSY is such a nice guy, it's sad that he wasn't taken seriously in the west because he's a great performer. But I mean, the western's opinion isn't all that valuable imo, he's doing good enough in SK.

He really is a great performer. I was disappointed he only amounted to so much in the West, but he really fed into that caricature. It was disappointing

Yeah true, unfortunately I doubt he would have been successful had he not fed into the caricature :(

I don't follow bts but I'm rooting for them. I get excited when Asian acts make appearances at these shows even though I don't watch. I hope it's a positive and happy experience for them!

he seems like such a nice dude. he and taehyung had some really cute interaction at the same time.

psy was kind of regarded as a gimmick in the west and i'm sure he knows that. at the same time, get money. asian people just can't seem to win in the western music industry. although i'm happy and proud that bts is going to the bbmas, they face the same risk (although their music is completely different): people are quite prejudiced about the whole asian boy band/girl group scene

i love his advice about regardless of what happens in the us, they're already great artists in south korea, they don't rly need western recognition to be great, though it's always nice.

This is such a DEJA VU moment for me. I remember when Big Bang were nominated for MTV award and kpop fans united, voted like crazy and they were the first ones to receive it. And then jealous people showed up and were like "this is no big deal, it's just a fan award." But it IS a big deal. Back then and now as well. It's basically carving way not only for BTS but for KPOP to be recognized not only for comedic songs but for actually being quality music.

Wow this is really nice. I know everyone pretty much idolizes PSY so that's cool that he acknowledged them.
