In light of the recent controversy between Mnet and iKON’s exclusion from the charts, the issue focused towards YG Entertainment’s excessive media play.

A post on Pann highlighted one of the reasonable explanation as to why Mnet decided to exclude iKON’s warm single “My Type” from their official rankings. As Mnet has stated in the past, non-promoted tracks are excluded from winning the trophy. The only artists who was excluded from the rule was Busker Busker, the winner of Mnet’s Superstar K3, while Roy Kim, an artist signed by CJ E&M, Naul, IU and other artists did not react to similar issues.

This statement led to netizens to focus on YG Entertainment’s reaction towards iKON’s exclusion from the official rankings as they accused the agency of putting out articles as deliberate media play instead.

As a response, the netizens expressed their thoughts on the controversy and revealed to have been fed up of the agency’s media play.

Below are collections of news titles that netizens claim are media play by YG

“IKON controversy MCountdown vs fans ‘Rules’ vs ‘Abuse of Power’.”

Also one line in an article made netizens all the more suspicious, and the line was a quote by YG employee “We are strongly suspicious that they may have neglected IKON from nominees in order to give another group 1st place.”

I think YG is being a lil over aggressive in their media play since I have no doubt ikon will do well
I don't think they should be able to win on music broadcasts with my type because 1) they aren't officially debuted 2) no performances. I've seen a lot of fans get increasingly annoyed with artists winning while not performing and the fact that ikon won that way doesn't sit well

The slayage of FTI was so real back in the day...and CNB followed it up even quicker.

I will say a lot of people felt that CNB coasted to their win on public goodwill toward FTI (read: Me...I was one of them lol...the song was catchy tho)

YG is pretty elitist and has a pretty intense fanbase whether you think it's deserved or not, like JYP doesn't have this and neither does SM. Sure Miss A won right after their debut but they haven't really been able to sustain that, and SM groups have never been right of the bat winners .-. I've always found it weird that when people discuss the Big3 and how easy it is to be successful in them they always paint it as if SM is an easy ride.

But anyways this along with the Seolhyun mediaplay recently is too much. To me YG isn't any different from FNC's CEO other than the fact that he (YG) has more money.

I understand why they're reacting this way. If you had a new project and is super stoked about it after putting in so much time and work into it, you'd be excited for its release to the public. Right? Then have your project get disqualified out of the running because you weren't actively promoting it.

I think YG STAFF overlooked the situation and was blinded by this excitement for ikon's debut rather than thinking of Mnet's rules.

But it wasn't their debut though. It was a pre-release song. That's like saying EXO's What is Love or History was their debut instead of MAMA. EXO's pre-release songs weren't shown on music show charts either so idk why YG is all up in arms about iKon.

(Only reason I'm comparing EXO and iKon is because they're the two groups that came to mind that released pre-release songs before their actual debut.)

Well, iKon's song seems to be successful. So if they're winning according to the rules (which have been the case for another music show, right?) then: congratulations! It's a big archievement.
Yet MNET shouldn't change their rules just for iKon. They'll probably win with the debut single anyway.
And YG should chill. The choice of pre-release was good, they already have fans with their survival shows + SMTM, they have a strategy of several releases until the end of the year and concerts: no need to try and build some failed controversy to make people talk about them, there's already many things happening for the group.
This issue is getting messy for something that really shouldn't have mattered in the first place.

It's a digital single pre-release from the album...those wins happens all the time. Most famously for Beast and On Rainy Days.

If the music show doesn't disallow it then the win is fine. MNet letting other groups win without promoting this year is what was confusing the issue for why they weren't nominated.

Either way it's awesome for the kids to win and remove the pressure they must be feeling.

This chart is only for public broadcast wins because I remember MBLAQ won early and SS501 won for Fighter after like 40 days

In my view debut is from when an official group releases a song...otherwise what does that make faceless groups like BEG or rookies groups who can't get slots on music shows or DON'T go on music shows like Day6
