Date: 2014-10-15 07:59 pm (UTC)Tablo's Solo album features many outside artists.
G-Dragon's albums have both featured outside artists including now even a western artist on one.
Seungri has featured multiple outside artsts.
PSY's two albums feature multiple outside artists, and even a western artist at this point.
Gummy while on YG collaborated with multiple outside artists.
Epik High's last album featured Gaeko of Dynamic Duo
So it's really more uncommon for artists to only work in house these days, I think this is kind of an older statement in that YG doesn't reach out a lot because they don't do many special stages or they don't promote the songs with other artists, but I think this is a simple thing. It's really easy if you are YG to say "Okay Taeyang your title song is going to have G-Dragon in it, because he will always be able to promote it with you." Both of these people are under your label, it's very easy to manage them instead of someone who is outside of your label that has schedules you don't manage.
That's just my 2cent rant. Sorry :(

Date: 2014-10-16 12:11 am (UTC)Yes, as much as I always want some collaboration across companies I'm always thinking that too. And with the industry still being pretty competetive (though, I think moreso in the idol industry than anything else) I imagine people don't want to bother with figuring out about royalties and such, lol.

Date: 2014-10-16 03:47 pm (UTC)Yeah I mean i'm not sure how royalties are handled in Korea, some people will sell off their part right away for a cash out at the start but you give that person complete control of how your voice is used, some people take less up front and then royalties following in the west so it just depends on how Korea handles it. I think when you go outside your group you just end up inviting more need to substitution on live stages and sometimes it works out (See Hyuna and Dok2 becoming Hyuna and Zico live) but sometimes it comes out awful (See Loco and Hyomin becoming Hyomin and that nobody from SPEED)
I loooove collaborations, but I don't want them on my title tracks typically because of that reason. Gimme a music video, and let's call it cool there!

Date: 2014-10-16 06:15 pm (UTC)LOL, true. I guess it would work out better if collabs happened on songs that weren't the ones being oft promoted. Reap the benefits and no stress.

Date: 2014-10-16 06:18 pm (UTC)Yeah I totally agree, and that's where a lot of the YG collabs are at. Often people only see their promoted collabs so they just assume that YG only works with YG, when there's a ton of collabs of YG and non-YG just not if you don't check their albums out.

Date: 2014-10-16 06:39 pm (UTC)Yep! I guess I just want it on a bigger scale--like the TRL age where a featuring was a major event haha. Though, I guess in the States there is less emphasis on the company you belong to and more the artists themselves. Ahhhh culture shock XD

Date: 2014-10-15 10:03 pm (UTC)Maybe he read the criticisms of EH's last album and/or took to heart Psy's disappointment in 'Gentleman', but I'm glad to see he's starting to realize that maybe the artist knows best and not everyone needs or should have a YG sound (and I think YG's done good by Lee Hi and 2ne1 musically). I would like to see other companies follow suit.
At any rate, this makes me more excited by EH's new album. I've been going back and revisiting their older ones.

Date: 2014-10-16 06:22 pm (UTC)He'd said before that stepped in to help pick out title songs and things like that, but he also made it very clear in his statement that he didn't step in on Epik High's last album. He just didn't want them influenced either by the artists that surround them at the YG building, so forcing them out would prove that Epik High was still Epik High. I think he kinda sees that his label really wants to stick to that "we're our own people" thing and as a business he is torn on it because he has an eye for hits with the Korean public. I'm pretty sure in the last while his only misstep was Epik High's last album that he helped pick the title track for but supposedly that was all he did.
Totally agree though with your point on Taeyang, he needs to let that man live, the fact that he has like 22 songs for the RISE album hurts me. :(

Date: 2014-10-16 02:03 am (UTC)yg denying studio use makes sense after their last comeback, but at the same time it's kinda like, are they kids? I doubt they'd change their style from sharing studio space, maybe be influenced, but well i guess yg's covering his bases
