Popular TV series have recently made their presence felt not only on the global viewership charts but also on local bestselling book lists.

The script book of the romantic comedy "Our Beloved Summer," published on Feb. 16, placed second on the weekly bestsellers list for the third week of February by Kyobo Book Center, the biggest bookstore chain in South Korea.

On the weekly sales list of Yes24, a local online bookstore, preorders of the series' screenplay book also ranked third in the third week of January.

The larger-than-expected debut on the book market came as the show, which aired on SBS and Netflix from December to January, became a sleeper hit in the winter.

Best-selling science fiction writer Kim Cho-yeop's first full-length novel "Greenhouse at the End of the Earth" will be adapted into a drama, the author's agency Blossom Creative announced, Tuesday.

Kim inked a licensing agreement with the local production company Studio Dragon, which has produced a string of hit series including "Crash Landing on You," "Vincenzo" and "Sweet Home."

"Greenhouse at the End of the Earth" is a dystopian sci-fi novel set in the year 2129. Human civilization has succeeded in recovering from the deadly man-made problem of "dust," particles capable of killing any organism through physical exposure, a problem which plagued the Earth seven decades earlier.

Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" was the most popular South Korean literary book overseas over the recent five years, data showed Tuesday.

According to the data from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, the feminist novel by Cho Nam-joo was translated into 10 different languages and sold more than 300,000 copies during the 2016-20 period. The book's Japanese translation, in particular, sold more than 200,000 copies since its release in 2018.

Will Yun Lee and Mark and Christine Holder’s Seoul Street and 04 Entertainment have preemptively nabbed the rights to My Summer in Seoul, bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken’s forthcoming romance novel set in the competitive world of K-Pop, to adapt as a television series. A search is out for a female Asian American writer to pen the adaptation.

The project comes amid a recent rise in the popularity of Korean dramas worldwide that culminated in the success of Squid Game on Netflix, which has become a global phenomenon.

My Summer in Seoul, set to be released later this fall, follows Korean-American Grace Lee as she embarks on a life-changing trip to Seoul working for her uncle’s record label. Her life changes as she begins an internship with one of the biggest KPOP bands in the world. As she builds friendships with the members, and starts to fall for one guy in particular, she soon realizes that she’s living her own K-Drama come to life and while she wants happily ever after, she just might end up with a hard lesson learned.

Jung Yun-ho, better known as U-Know Yunho of K-pop duo TVXQ, will be releasing a children's book on Sept. 20, raising some eyebrows as he made headlines after violating social distancing rules at an escort bar in February.

YouTube channel CheckThisOut announced Sunday that the members of TVXQ ― Jung and Shim Chang-min ― will each release children's books that they wrote with a group of children as part of a project for the channel.

"(Jung's book) tells the tale of U-Know Yunho's childhood and follows a journey of a candid, innocent childhood spirit," it said of Jung's book.

In a preface for the book, Jung expressed that he was able to "find childhood innocence that has been trapped underneath the cover of being an adult" through working on the book. "As I did, I hope you can take the time to explore your own childhood spirit," he wrote.

South Korea's first full-length novel written by artificial intelligence (AI) will hit the shelves next week, its publisher said Friday.

Parambook publishing company said the novel, written by an AI writer named Birampung, will be published Wednesday under a title roughly translated as "The World from Now On" in English.

Birampung has been co-developed by local AI startup Dapumda and natural language processing company Namaesseu.

Kim Tae-yeon, a writer and a computer science expert, directed the AI to write the novel through deep learning process after he outlined the novel's theme, background and characters, according to the publisher.

Renowned South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook is set to direct a U.S. TV project based on the Pulitzer-wining novel "The Sympathizer," a publisher here said Thursday.

Park, the man behind iconic works like "The Handmaiden" and "Joint Security Area," will work on the TV adaptation of Vietnamese American novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen's award-winning 2015 book, according to Minumsa Publishing Group.

Nguyen voiced excitement over the collaboration on Twitter, saying he "can't imagine a better person to direct this TV adaptation."

Wattpad is being acquired by Naver, the South Korean conglomerate, in a $600 million cash-and-stock deal.


Naver plans to incorporate at least part of the business into another of its holdings, the publishing platform Webtoon, which Naver launched in 2004, brought to the U.S. in 2014, and that features thousands of comic strips created by its users. It also has a huge audience. According to Naver, Webtoon was averaging more than 67 million monthly users as of last August.

As people spend more time at home amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, they are turning to books, which brought some changes to this year's book sales trends.

The unprecedented situation impacted how readers choose what book to read. Three major Korean booksellers interpreted the interest readers took in education and investment as a response to difficult times as they try to navigate a path towards an uncertain future caused by the pandemic.

Kyobo Book Centre, the largest bookstore chain in Korea, identified five key themes related to the popular books of 2020: Pandemic, Aloneness, Contactless, Stock Market and Education.
