(G)I-DLE’s Jeon Soyeon accused of plagiarizing ATEEZ

KQ Entertainment has released a statement following allegations that a song from “My Teen Girl” plagiarized ATEEZ’s song “Wave.”

“My Teen Girl” is an MBC audition program in a classroom format aimed at debuting a new girl group. It aired its finale live on February 27, where the debut lineup and the group’s name were revealed. During the finale, the contestants performed original songs that were written for the show. However, one of the songs, “SUN,” which (G)I-DLE’s Jeon Soyeon, who is a mentor on the show, composed for the contestants, became controversial for its similar chorus to ATEEZ’s “Wave,” which was released in 2019.

On February 28, KQ Entertainment released the following statement:

JYP Entertainment accused of plagiarizing Ateez for new girl group’s music video

K-pop powerhouse JYP Entertainment finds itself embroiled in controversy for alleged plagiarism of an Ateez music video and the boy band’s concept for its own rookie girl group’s debut.

On Tuesday, the company's new girl group NMIXX entered the K-pop fray with the single “Ad Mare.” But just a day since the debut, the septet is making headlines for accusations of plagiarism: The band’s titular “O.O” has come under fire for copying boy band Ateez's music video and its universe.

The music video for “O.O” begins with pirate-related items laid on the ground and swerves to zoom into a large galleon in a nondescript area. And in line with the explanation, Atinies, the official fandom name for Ateez, has pointed out that the clip shares many similarities to the boy band’s music video, stressing it is an issue that “cannot be ignored.”

OMONA ORIGINAL: The K in K-pop - songs that use Korean tradition, history & culture [pt 2]

Don't forget to check out part 1 of this post! (In fact I recommend it bc some things mentioned here are explained there)

It’s probably not a surprise to anyone familiar with Korean history that Koreans have a complex relationship with their own native culture. A lot of what is considered traditionally Korean was phased out, left behind or even actively eschewed as part of the post-colonial, post-war, sub-38th desperation to modernize and stabilize as quickly as humanly possible. Many of the most obvious markers of classic Korean life were replaced, erased, or even rejected as relics of pre-modern unworldliness, poverty, and devastation. So hanboks and hanoks were put away and torn down, polyester and concrete taking their place as Korea moved forward in a stilted race to escape the hazards of being a poor, damaged, weak country that the rest of the world could afford to ignore. Simply in terms of the looks and sounds of everyday life, the Korea of the 1950s-60s and the Korea of today have astoundingly little in common.

Fan faces backlash for her rude behaviour at a Ateez fansign and racist behaviour afterwards

A few days ago, ATEEZ held a fan meeting event, which was limited to 30 spots. The intimate meeting should have been filled with heartwarming interactions, but a recent TikTok video has started to go viral on Twitter due to a participant's condescending and racist behavior. The person in question is a Russian TikToker with over 124,000 followers, who recently moved to South Korea and posts K-pop related content like dance covers on TikTok.

According to different Twitter users, the TikToker can allegedly be heard asking some rude questions to some of the ATEEZ members, while mocking their English speaking abilities.

After the fansign, she went on IG to talk about her experience at the concert and she was making slit-eye gestures mocking Asians.

The issue blew up first under international Ateez fans but has now reached enter-talk and kpop sites like koreaboo. The fan has since then posted an apology on Twitter/TikTok and defends herself that she was misunderstood.

It is a bit murky about what she actually said in the fansign and what she "just" put as on-screen captions in her TikTok. But her slit-eye gesture at her live afterwards is pretty cut and dry.

What were instances in your fandom, where people have crossed the line during fansigns?
