Who: The nine-member (yes, NINE) K-pop girl group Girls' Generation who became fast friends with Kelly Ripa when they performed their first international single "The Boys" (released in Korean and English)
What: An American version of their I Got A Boy Korean album (released New Years Day)
When: 2013
What We Know: The group is in talks with Interscope Records to release an American version of their latest Korean album though a date, title, and track details are undecided. If a nine-member Korean group making it in the U.S. sounds like a stretch remember two members are from America! Yet we think most will react like David Letterman -- with nine women writhing in front of them, he looked like he could barely control himself!

Who: The artist with the most-viewed video ever on YouTube, Psy (which means a new Psy music video AND a new dance, how could we NOT be excited?!)
What: Psy's new international album, still untitled, that will feature both Korean and English tracks with possible production by Diplo and guest appearance by 2 Chainz
When: February or March
What We Know: He has global appeal now, but Psy has expressed he wants to release his new single in Korean with an accompanying dance featuring "some sports move". The K-pop veteran has said he wants a solo comeback single to prove he can have similar success as "Gangnam Style" without the help of another big name. Can he deliver a song that crosses language barriers...AGAIN?!
american promotions means more hairporn and sooyoung love~

Date: 2013-01-16 04:40 pm (UTC)i wish the album released wouldn't be a full english one with only english songs. nor do i want to see an album with only english songs and then separate korean songs.a mix of english and korean languages within the songs could work for them. similar to what many latin artists did to gain mainstream radio play when many moved from spanish only radio.

Date: 2013-01-17 05:04 am (UTC)i really wish they have songs with varying proportions of english and korean in them. that would probably be the best way to break in US i think.

Date: 2013-01-17 04:11 pm (UTC)i was watching a commercial on E last night about a british girl group the Saturdays and their reality show in trying to make it here in the states. and seeing how SNSD is pushing their brand over here as well....it makes me wonder if the girl group trend will be coming back. if the Saturday's do well, if Spice Girls do have a reunion...this could make it ripe for SNSD (if SMe builds up their fanbase here instead of going, "we are here, love us!").

Date: 2013-01-18 06:26 pm (UTC)what will hold them back the most is the girls not speaking english in interviews on the shows and radio. the public will get bored and annoyed at tiffiany and jessica doing it all and question why don't the others speak english. sadly we do love our official language. with girl groups it is more than just the music, it also the personality. and americans will be lazy to not look up subbed shows. we barely watch subbed movies and wait for someone to do the remake.
pretty much the atmosphere has to be right. i'm not even an SNSD fan, but i do want Kpop to succeed here in little bursts (for pure selfish reasons - more concerts).
the public could be open to an all asian group, but i don't think it will be SNSD since their image isn't fully honest. i said a long time ago, Kpop could work, BUT they need a serious regular hook up like with disney. JYP did have the right idea hooking up with Nickelodeon BUT the story of the tv movie was wonky and there was a lot of holes in the follow up. now, there probably won't be.
one thing that could work in the favor is that a group will have to take on the ethics of putting in the work, and not just showing up relaying on them to automatically have fans. alot of american band/solo artists tours endlessly, finds ways to get their music out there in random ways. the WGs had their tour but...again no follow up. everyone says the tour bombed, BUT seriously for a new group that the majority of mainstream people never heard of, it did well.
lastly, the US has to want girl groups. no matter how amazing they are, it has to be the right moment...even if they sing fully in english.
