PSY apologises for Anti American lyrics.

On December 7, singer PSY who is currently residing in U.S. made an official statement concerning his past Anti-American behaviour. He stated, “I regret using such aggressive and negative words in the past. I apologize to everyone who was hurt by my words.”

He continued, “As a proud Korean and someone who has studied in U.S., I am perfectly aware of the sacrifices the American soldiers made to keep peace in the world. The song I sang eight years ago was in response to the death of two Korean girls by the American military tank and also to the war in Iraq. I still believe in the freedom of expression, but recently I have realized that words should be used carefully. I feel terrible that my lyrics may have been interpreted erroneously andhurt others.”

PSY added, “For past few months, I had the opportunity to perform in front of the U.S. soldiers. I felt truly honored. I again apologize for my past actions. I hope that the U.S. citizens can forgive me.”

In 2002, PSY has participated in the demonstration against the presence of U.S. military in Korea. In 2004, he has also written rap lyrics that were strongly Anti-American. Due to these past actions, some has argued that PSY should not be performing at the White House on December 8 for U.S. President Obama.

Honestly, I have to agree. I like Psy (and also disliked the war in Iraq) but if this were directed toward anyone else it'd be dismissed on the basis of how it's a "Sorry you were offended" apology...and not met with "BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE! UGH AMERICA" reactions. I personally accept his apology but yeah. People hate the US but love its money.

Soldiers from all nations have killed innocents. Did most Koreans forget about what Korean soldiers did in WW2 or the Vietnam War?

It's a bad situation, but there is no "victim" and no "evil" here that comes in the form of a whole entire nation.

Of course America should try to stop this as much as possible we haven't been doing so hot on that lately, but this is not criticism, this is hatred, pure and simple and has no place to go within the discourse of whether or not American soldiers should be in Korea.

While that is all true, someone obviously forgot about Japan, China, practically all of Europe, parts of the Middle East.

Every country in power has used things for their own advantage. Sad truth, but you can't pin point one country for that crime and ignore all others.

South Korean soldiers themselves massacred innocent civilians and raped thousands of Vietnam women during the Vietnam War. Korean soldiers tortured Americans and British soldiers in POW camps. But you still love South Korean today, despite your logic that we must hate on every country that has committed atrocities. It's illogical to make that equation, frankly, because a country is made up of many people and most of those people have no voice in the terrible decisions that are made.

While I certainly understand the frustration and anger that people felt at the deaths of the girls, especially since it was committed by American soldiers who bear a history of abusing Korean women on and off the base (all depends on your perspective and who you ask), I find the vehement animosity for American people to be astounding if that is the sole basis. I certainly understand hating the military and the government, but to think that American people themselves are in real control of those powers and we ourselves (or at least certain groups) are not victims of that system is a little naive.

But at the same time, citizens must be accountable for the actions and behavior of their government and military, especially under a formal republic like the US.

In either case, PSY’s words don’t really bother me, because when people often talk about “Americans” in general, they’re usually not talking about any group I belong to…so I’m good. Go ‘head PSY with your self-expression.

i was wondering when this would appear on omona. this has been stressing me out, idk why i've been taking it so personally. i guess it's because i live in the south and i've seen racist shit about this on my fb feed already :/ granted, i definitely don't condone the lyrics and i think it was a bad idea by all accounts, but i also think the way american media has been framing this is pretty awful. it's just a shitty situation all around. people here tend to generalize quite a bit, too, so to many, i'm sure it'll seem more like "koreans are america-haters." blah. :(

Why did PSY have to Apologise to America for "keeping world peace."

They haven't kept peace, they've attacked Countries illegally and killed innocents. I wish PSY hadn't said that.

But he's apologised for singing a song that's not even his, I was annoyed by the comments but then I feel alot of Americans believe they're exempt from being criticised because they spread freedom and other terms when all they do is exploit poor countries.

It's like Americans are so shocked and hurt that their beloved foreign sideshow, their exotic little amusement, is not 100% bowing at their feet. We've loved you, and this is how you repay us?? As a result of this "scandal" I keep seeing comments on, say, Reddit about how Koreans are actually ~the most xenophobic people ever~. In a way they've already begun to paint the nation as a place populated by people more savage than us, who simply haven't been enlightened to overcome barbaric racist ideology in the way Americans have. I don't disagree that Koreans are very xenophobic, especially toward Southeast Asians, a lot of whom in Korea are poor immigrant workers who the country has no qualms about exploiting for cheap, cheap labor.

But that is a different story altogether. It's so unbelievably disingenuous that any American would try to make connection between that sort of very real Korean racism and what PSY wrote in his song. The Korea-US relation has virtually nothing in common with the kind of ethnocentricism reserved for the poor foreigners in the country. Americans are not a minority in any crevice of the world in the sense that poor minority workers from poor nations are. Americans don't need defending.

Americans are looked at with envy or bitterness, a resentment that comes from a long relationship that--contrary to the oversimplified belief most Americans seem to hold--has not always benefited Korea. I am sick of the line that Koreans have no reason to hate America because they "saved" South Korea. This kind of thinking is exactly why a huge part of the world has so much anger at America. As a powerful country no doubt a lot of them are drinking the kool aid about what's happened in the past 100 years and how it happened. History written by the victors, etc, noble USA swooping in to save the day.

Given the context of what America the nation is--and nations are always inevitably symbols, greater than the sum of its parts--PSY's lyrics aren't racism, they're criticism. Merited criticism at that, and words that I'm sure a country that pretty inarguably drives the hegemony of the world can take in stride.

And though in this comment I talked about America and Americans as "they", I say this as a Korean-American who has equal love for both her nations. Get over it, America. You can afford to.
