Psy recently guested on QTV‘s ‘Talk Asia‘ and expressed his concerns about why some Asian artists try so hard to “act American.”
Psy stated, “I don’t know why, but I think there are a lot of Asian singers who try to act American. I’m not an American, so it wouldn’t make sense for me to act like one. I want to maintain my status, career, and nationality.”
When asked what the secret to his worldwide success is, he stated, “When I was on the plane to attend to some American schedules, I thought of different ways to introduce myself to the world. They were mostly thoughts about what kind of position I had to put myself in for the future.”
He continued, “After much deliberation, the answer was simple: be what I am, Korean. That’s one of the reasons why I chose to introduce myself before I began dancing on ‘The Ellen Show‘.”
The 20-minute interview done with CNN correspondent Alina Cho will air on December 1st.
I only find this 2:44 video of the interview on yt. :(

Date: 2012-12-02 10:26 pm (UTC)Of course when WG were still doing things like Nobody and 2DT in the US you had people complaining they weren't American enough, so it's damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Date: 2012-12-02 11:21 pm (UTC)I agree with him in the respect that YG's (in particular) artists do all this 'from the hood' shit, which is so embarrassing I could cry. You can be a good rapper without the bling/hoodies. Geez. But pop music is very much a global thing. Everyone's influencing everyone. KPop is hardly original.

Date: 2012-12-03 12:14 am (UTC)Exactly! It kind of amazes me that GD can have all of these fan girls that think he's oh so cute for that, when he really just wishes he was genuinely hood. It's such a fake and transparent act, idgi. I think it has to do with some people being Asiaphiles.

Date: 2012-12-03 01:43 am (UTC)But in all seriousness, it's difficult for a any foreign act to make it in the US without being Americanised. Gangnam Style was an exception, and for all we know, PSY may end up like a one hit wonder. So many have before, but he doesn't seem aware of that. He can say stuff like 'why do they act so Americanised', but he would have understood better if he'll understand soon methinks.

Date: 2012-12-03 09:22 am (UTC)This! There is a way to do that right and a way to do that wrong. DBSK's Japanese stuff and Se7en's American attempt come to mind. DBSK's Japanese stuff sounds Japanese (most of it) and adapted to the Japanese market well, but still has the DBSK color to it, while Se7en was clearly just trying to make music the American public would like and feature someone "popular." YG was more than a few years to late on Lil Kim, and Girls didn't seem very Se7en to me.
