Each Friday, Billboard presents "Bubbling Under," a weekly look at new and noteworthy acts making their way toward Billboard chart success.
Up this week: Wonder Girls, Priyanka Chopra, Tame Impala and August Rain
Wonder Girls
PSY's K-Pop breakthrough on U.S. top 40 radio with "Gangnam Style" is perhaps helping open doors for fellow Korean act Wonder Girls. The group is percolating under the Nielsen BDS-based Mainstream Top 40 tally with the English-language single "Like Money," featuring Akon (JYP). The song could be the female quintet's first airplay chart hit in the U.S., thanks to early support from WXRK New York, WKSE Buffalo, N.Y., and WKSZ Green Bay, Wis.

Date: 2012-10-13 04:55 pm (UTC)I KNOW WG WERE THE BIGGEST THING EVAAAAAAAR, BUT BY THE TIME I REALLY GOT INTO KPOP (must have been 2010ish?) I ALREADY THOUGHT JYP SHOULD HAVE TRIED WITH miss A INSTEAD.
Screw the Disney/Nickolodean audience! When I think of emulating Miley Cyrus as a business strategy.... ಠ_ಠ

Date: 2012-10-13 06:25 pm (UTC)WG got some recognition in the US by touring with the Jonas Bros (fanbase also extremely young), and they had a Nick show. And a terribly cheesy movie (or so I assume). It certainly looks like they're trying to appeal to tweenagers, anyway. Tweenagers have enthusiasm and may carry that loyalty as they age. Anyway, it looks like basically the same thing to me, and it just makes me feel sad when they're all 20-24 now. >.> Hopefully for them their business strategy has taken a turn, but who knows.
(It's true that boybands in korea or maybe everywhere also kind of do the same thing, but stilllll....)

Date: 2012-10-14 04:20 pm (UTC)Beyond K-Pop, top 40 could find a new hit from India, as well, as award-winning Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has released her debut Interscope single "In My City," featuring will.i.am. Not only is Chopra signed to the same label as Lady Gaga, but she also shares her manager: Troy Carter. Ahead of its planned radio push, the uptempo pop/dance track, which Chopra co-wrote with RedOne and Esther Dean, begins with 5,000 first-week downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her debut album is due later this year.
