I always find these articles kind of embarrassing lol "KOREAN-POP (K-POP)" no, really??? And all those little awkward googled fact bubbles. I COULD GO ON BUT I WON'T
It wasn't the hypen I was bashing it's the fact that they had to specify that Korean pop can be shortened to kpop idk the whole article just reads awkward as hale to me
idk I think it's more for people who have heard Kpop but don't know what the K stands for. Like it could be Kazakhstani pop for all we know. But yeah IA, the tone is definitely overeager, in that instance as well. But that's probably because the article is so short. And the cutesy ~by the numbers~ blurbs don't help either.
When I found out PSY was on the metro, I wanted to go pick up at Elephant & Castle but it was already the afternoon so they were handing out The Evening Standard not the Metro anymore ;; I know other people who have it anyway ^^
also not for nothing but -- apart from being Asian ofc -- I don't think there's THAT much of a difference in the fashion/style of Korean boybands and the fashion of The Wanted or One Direction or whomever. I mean SHINee have had the occasional questionable outfits for their comebacks and whatever lol but for the most part the boybands just wear jeans, tshirts, suits, cute lil waistcoats... and ok there are certain members from certain groups who look a little androgynous or "softer" or whatever but I wouldn't clump them all together and say NONE OF THEM LOOK LIKE BOYS HOW COULD PRETEEN GIRLS FIND THEM ATTRACTIVE!!!!!11 I dunno maybe I'm biased/overthinking
I was on the bus reading it when I excitedly said "PSY!!!" out loud, everyone looked at me weirdXD
I've seen a Kpop article on it before though, a while back but I can't remember what it was about.
This is the first mention of Psy in th UK I've seen. I actually thought maybe we'd somehow missed the whole thing. (maybe I've just been living under a rock or something :/)
I love how they specifically go into names like 'Singer Junsu, from boy band JYJ' at the same time as assuming the reader has no knowledge of k-pop at all. i dont know, it just feels like, why didn't they just say 'one singer/artist/idol even said blah blah blah...' It would have the same relevance.
I used to pick up the metro on my way to work on the train in years gone by, funny thinking of it talking about Kpop now cos I didn't know anything about it at all back then. I think considering what a lot of articles are like this is an ok commentary on Psy and the way Gangnam Style has exploded. Though I don't get that comment about Kpop being "in its early experimental stages is all about...
Ummm....do anyone else think that people would be more accepting if girl groups hit the US/UK market instead of Boy bands?...I don't know...for me I feel quite the opposite...
I do but it depends on the girl group. Those with a really cutesy image isn't going to fly but those with a more mature/sexy feel could possibly do well given the right song. I feel Miss A or Brown Eyed Girls could do well.
In the US, we have a narrow view of Asian men (sexless and nerdy), that we would barely give them a try.
Girl groups have hit the US/UK market, they've just failed for the most part. But I don't think that has to do completely with gender. Image/reception is really the most important thing.
This whole K-pop business becoming more mainstream is so weird to me. Not because I want to ~protect~ these idols, but because it's been around for ages and just now in the last year or two it's become so annoyingly viral even at anime conventions. It's like who invited this?
Lmao I feel like one of those poop head hipster kids because people are making this new "kpop fad discovery" and now it is everywhere... I have been stanning since the late 90's early 2000's and I was always getting so much lip about it... Now it is the biggest thing.
This is a surprisingly good and well-rounded article. And that headline slayed me.
But still, I really wish people would stop saying or implying that PSY is fat. He has a round face, yeah, and the funny chubby guy is part of his image, but dude looked slim in his American media appearances (a better point of reference than Korean media appearances). And the round face is more indicative of his Koreanness than his size. People are so used to their plastic idols that they don't realize how so many real Koreans look.

Yeah, he just has a belly on him that's all. Other than that his limbs don't seem to carry weight!
This isn't the first time Kpop has featured in the Metro. I have one where 2NE1 has a huge pic and tiny article from last year. I'm pissed I missed this edition with Psy though :(
