I still am not really a fan of the song (it sounds way too much like I am the Best and mix of other songs to me), but I think I like him as a person. But lol at people thinking this bringing kpop a lot of recognition. I think it's novelty to most people.
i actually think the reaction is moreso "laughing with him" than laughing at him...the mv is so obvious in showing that he's making fun of himself although i think some people are laughing at how the chorus sounds like "open condom style"
it is basically a novelty song, but the probability of the people outside the kpop fandom viewing this and marveling at psy as an artist and performer are very slim.
for the random viewer, gangnam style is one of those videos where they're probably looking at it and thinking how silly this asian man is.
When he started speaking English I laughed, probably because I didn't expect it.
A lot of people think he's being laughed at, but I guess I'm one of those weird ones who think people are laughing with him instead. These days people are more attached to songs that are towards the dance genre or something that just allows you to dance hence the popularity of songs like LMFAO's Party rock anthem, Chris brown's Don't wake me up, and a little older, Big sean's Dance (ass). I wouldn't call those quality songs but I do enjoy them.
I don't think Psy is going to last past this song, but I do think there are people who thoroughly enjoy it. I personally use it as a hype song when I'm doing work.
I agree - the general reaction I'm getting is that people are really getting on the 'meme dance trend' and they are seriously finding this video quite funny on its own merits. LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem with "Everyday I'm shuffling" was unironic in how many people took to the shuffling.
From what I remember in 90s, it was very cool to reject anything uncool or lame, and it later became lame to be cool, so it was cool to be uncool (hipster). Now I think it's simply progressed to, if it is funny, let's unironically take to it, since that it is own merits. That's what I've observed historically in pop culture.
I've always had a crush on PSY long before him coming to YG even though that was not that long ago. Where was I going with this? Oh yea, this just made me crush harder. Yea I'm weird. Hope he can do something in the States.
I don't take notice how this was an 'internet hit' or 'sensation' because I'm into Kpop already, I just feel it was just a new, funny song and video by PSY, lol.
