Psy scored an all-kill on music charts with his new single Gangnam Style.
It happened on July 16, when Psy squeezed through the idols filling up the K-Pop scene and took over the music charts, a rare feat for a singer who has been performing for 12 years running.
His previous album released on October 2010, his fifth studio album Psy Five, seemed like it also would’ve taken over the charts at the time, but Psy shook his head at the mention in a meeting with enews.
“I did expect it to happen when I released the first single cut Right Now, but I didn’t even come close to an all-kill because Girls’ Generation (SNSD) had released its new album. (Laugh) SNSD is intimidating.”
Psy recalled how he felt at the time and joked about the moment. Because of his past experience, he couldn’t hide his happiness at the success of Gangnam Style.
Psy said, “I’m so happy. I anticipated Right Now to succeed, but this time I didn’t anticipate anything. I’m happy, though, that it’s garnering an unexpected success. This is my first music site all-kill, and now I know how it feels.”
Right then Psy received a phone call from his agency head, YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun Suk. Yang Hyun Suk had called Psy to congratulate him on his success.
“[Yang] Hyun Suk hyung (big brother) jokingly asked me who I thought contributed the most to my no. 1 win,” Psy said. “Since I’ve signed with YG Entertainment, I’ve been helped by the best talents for my album; they’re such a big help.”
He emphasized that in the past he had to do everything himself from start to finish, but now more than half of his work is helped along by the top staff. His new album also put Psy’s crazy connections to good use. G-Dragon, LeeSsang, Sung Si Kyung, Yoon Do Hyun, Kim Jin Pyo and Park Jung Hyun were featured in the album, while Park Ji Sung, Ha Ji Won, Cha Seung Won, Lee Kyung Kyu and other stars showed their support for Psy in a supportive video.
“I think you’re born with the fortune to have good friends. I was able to become who I am today thanks to the help I received from so many great people around me whenever I was down. I want to continue to showcase a type of music just like Psy, that only Psy can do.”
