A McGregor man’s English class of South Korean children have gained a bit of national media attention thanks to the Ramones.

Peter Strutt, a 29-year-old international English teacher, has been teaching his young students at the Sullivan School, a private academy in the Sinsa Dong district in Seoul, to sing popular American tunes for friends and family watch back at home. Thanks to colleague Noah Bergman, the online world is discovering his clever way of teaching the language.


“I noticed how into it they were,” Strutt said when he taught them punk rock number “Judy is a Punk,” by the Ramones. So he and Bergman decided to record the performance and Bergman posted it to YouTube, he said. It has since picked up nearly 150 thousand hits.

Equipped with a guitar, Strutt teaches music to all eleven classes at the school (Bergman’s “Kangaroo” class of 4-year-olds is featured in the videos). He’s taught them the Buggles, the Beatles and Bob Dylan, which have been some of the school favorites, he said.

“They do a pretty good job,” Strutt’s sister, Cheri Moser said of the kids she’s watched perform with her brother for several months now, noting not all of them are fluent in English, but well on their way.

Strutt said he and his little company of performers aren’t just singing individual songs; they are currently working on a Sufjan Stevens-inspired Christmas show.
