Chito Miranda, main vocalist of Philippine rock band Parokya ni Edgar, defended KPop against the haters with the following tweets...
Translation:
Chito's follower: Well, unless (those fans) understand what those (KPop singers) sing. That's why a lot of people are hating because those fans do not understand what those acts are singing in the first place.
Chito Miranda: So what if they do not know or understand what those acts are singing? As long as they enjoy what they are hearing, we should respect that. Music is not just about the lyrics, it's also about how it makes you feel. Why is it fun to sing "Butsekik" by Yoyoy Villame even if its lyrics do not make sense? Or what about "Five Years" by Sugar Hiccup? Anyway, we all have different reasons why we enjoy music. Sometimes it's because the singer is beautiful. I like this song as long as this singer sings it. Everyone has their own likings.
Chito Miranda: I love pop music. I love Girls' Generation, 2NE1, Gary Valenciano, and Sarah Geronimo. What I don't like are those Pinoys who imitate KPop*. They're so cheesy.
Chito Miranda: Girls' Generation are so badass! Their songs are beautiful, they even look cute dancing. Those Pinoys imitating KPop are nothing compared to them.
* He was referring to this and this.

Date: 2011-05-01 11:58 pm (UTC)Sadly there a lot of ignorant peeps in the Phils that don't know anything about KPOP and all they could do is bash them. Personally, I don't really care about those haters. KPOP is here so they just need to fckin deal wit it! LOL.

Date: 2011-05-02 12:14 am (UTC)I will say this though, to hate on the Pinoys "imitating" KPop is the same as saying that KPop imitates Western music. So what if they took influence from KPop. KPop takes influence from Western music all the time. Whether it be the beats or the imagery. I.E. Teddy grew up in America, even if for a short time, he was still influenced by the culture in America.
Had those Filipino groups song and PV had been produced by Teddy, JYP or some other famous Korean producer, are you still going to call it imitating? And if not, then why say the they are imitating KPop when the only difference is who produced the final product?
Obviously, KPop is not 'famous' (and by that I mean shown on MTV or VH1, like how Spanish music is shown on some TV stations nationwide) in America. In Asia, Asian artists are popular, so if the Philippines or any other Asian country wants to use the KPop/JPop formula why hate? If you were the CEO of a label you know you'd be doing the same thing to.

Date: 2011-05-02 12:23 am (UTC)with xlr8 & popgirls, their debut was heavily influenced by suju and wg (coming from a very big fan of theirs)causing a whole lot of pinoys to be pissed calling them unoriginal/cheesy/kpop wannabes. but slowly but surely they are getting better and more original...but it doesn't help that kpop is so popular that everything they do is seen as kpop-ripoff by blind kpop pinoy fans& the crab mentality pinoys are accustomed to.
i dont get why flips dont support their own. tsk tsk

Not some half filipino and half japanese/korean trying to sing in tagalog with a kpop concept. Not to be mean or anything.. It's just irritating when I watch filipino channel, that's all...

TL;DR PARAGRAPH OF RANTING~
Date: 2011-05-02 10:49 am (UTC)I don't understand why people can't just let people like what they like. I hate it when people insist that loving one genre (kpop or... violent rap in my case =))) removes from you the capacity to love another simultaneously. I mean, why do people even bring nationalism into the picture? Who's to say that the people who line up to buy a kpop album aren't the same crowds who cheer in OPM concerts or the same people who vote in the daily charts for Filipino music? To be fair, some kids are like this, but to generalize is just ignorant and disappointing. Besides, I'm sure that not all kpop fans listen to kpop exclusively. People don't have one dimensional tastes okaaaay. It's going to suck if everything sounded like kpop/acoustic songs/electronica/rock. Personally, when I get tired of kpop, I listen to all sorts of genres (rap, rock, bossa, classical etc) then when I get tired of that, I go back to kpop or something else.
As for the "imitators", I feel quite sorry for them. I guess they can sing and dance and be their own artists but they are unfortunately under companies that are out for money. If you're under a company like that, you're subjected to what they want. And what they want is something that sells at the moment (kpop) and something that won't cost lots of money (thus the low-budget videos, wardrobe, sound mixing etc). I understand that yes, companies need to make money blahblahblah but I think that any company in the music industry has a responsibility to foster creativity and create music. The way I see it, none of the companies who handle these groups give a fuck about that responsibility and so their products are lackluster. Honestly, they're wasting money, talent and a lot of other things.
I can say that I don't like XLR8's... artistry. I'll skip You're So Hot and their styling because people have already bashed those enough. I have the
autographedalbum (haha lol don't ask) and so I can evaluate it on its own, no kpop biases or whatever. The packaging was of poor quality and the layouts were nothing special (not an inherently local problem -- I have OPM albums with gorgeous packaging). The songs were all a bit... terrible, especially production-wise. The mixing was so unbalanced, the arrangements were so old-sounding (not in a ~vintage~ or ~old-school~ way, mind you), the lyrics were a bit cheesy (I'm so sorry, the taglish was so out of place) and the melodies weren't very special. The boys can sing (IDK live because I watch ASAP lol) but the songs were just terribly executed and were either over or under processed (too much computer), making the best song this pretty ballad that was in English and this song called I Love You Girl (the intro of which is being called a blatant copy of Beast's Just Before Shock, or something). So, even without the "imitator" image, I think the album is quite bad and the fact that they are being touted as rip-offs just makes things much much worse. This isn't the boys' fault really -- they didn't make the songs or spend money on it. I blame their management -_-;;LOL sorry, I just had to get this out. I think these feelings have been sitting in me for a long time but this particular article awakened them =))

Date: 2011-05-02 04:50 pm (UTC)Alright, tbqh I could never get into p-pop even though I'm mostly pinoy. Though I grew up in a home where my mom would always play ballads (:
my friend introduced me to RPM and it's a nice refreshing change from kpop every now and then ~
even my parents agree, having a taste for any music is your choice. It defines you as a person because none of us are the same, we're all induviduals with different tastes.
Oh, and the first thing I thought after reading this article was that those people might have been Dara haters. OTL.
